This restaurant has always been a wonderful place to go to, sit by the fireplace and relax with a warm cup of tea or coffee or whatever sounds great at the time. I've gone there with friends, as part of fundraisers, family dinners and romantic dinners. I have just about always left so content. This place is a local staple in our community and I am so glad! We were recommended to this local restaurant from one of the volunteers at Craftmakers Cabin and it didn't disappoint! We went on a Friday during an all-You-can-eat whitefish event. My husband and I each had the French onion soup (which we thought was a little watery, but hot and yummy) and the whitefish (we ordered it pan fired, with the garlic mash). The food was amazing and the service was excellent! There was a long wait, but this is apparently a popular place, so we expected that and were patient and made some new friends. read more

A very diverse menu for the area (including garlic mussels and coconut shrimp served with a delicious rum sauce), but also burgers and pizzas. Their craft cocktails are made with house distilled liquors, but they also have craft and domestic beers. The staff is stellar and the customers are a hoot. If this restaurant was not "upnorth", I'd give it three stars. But, since the competition isn't fierce and it's much better than other restaurants "near" by, I decided they are worthy of 4 stars. I've been here a small handful of time. It's a lot smaller than it looks because half of the restaurant is a bar. Don't drink the beer on tap. It never a tastes right. Let's start with the pizza. It's pretty good. Nothing extraordinary, but it's good. The bread sticks rock. The cheese bread is good and a meal of its own! There is a salmon dish that has a sweet and spicy type Asian sauce on it. I'm pretty sure they bought some Asian Zing from BWW and called it good. It was alright on the fish. Now, if ordering the salmon, check the menu carefully. They have two areas containing the salmon. It's basically s small portion and a regular portion, so if you don't look close, you'll be left hungry. Now the staff.... They are ok. They aren't overly nice, but not quite rude. They just lack spunk or a pep in their step. If you decide to go here, you won't be disgusted by the place! read more

Nicer inside than outside. Staff was nice but then stood at bar 6' from patrons complaining about customers not tipping enough. Only able to eat 1/2 the French dip sandwich, meat had an off taste to it. Started puking an hour later. Definitely don't try the French dip! read more

My husband and I went in for a lunch around 1:30 and upon entering the waitress said sit anywhere you like so we went on into the next room and the waitress there said you have to sit at the bar, we're having a party of 30. You mean to tell me the other waitress didn't know this. The tables weren't even set up for a party. They couldn't seat 2 well dressed married man and woman for lunch!!. Had to sit at the bar by 2 other older men who looked like they had been there drinking awhile. No thanks and as we walked past the small portable meezly salad bar my husband pointed out the flies!!!! I'd hate to see that kitchen!!!! Will not be back there ever. read more

Not impressed with this restaurant at all .... the food was barely passable, the advertised price was changed with the explanation "Oh, I just didn't have a chance to change the board." The waitress had way too many tables and while she did her best, including bussing and collecting the check .... the service was terrible. Not her fault, just poorly managed. My husband and I have been a Friday night regular at the Backwoods Bistro since July 2010 when we bought our place in Lincoln. We loved coming in on Friday nights and felt it was "a bit of home" and enjoyed the staff--Carol, Tracie, Angie, and Brittany. All had been great--delicious food, good company until Carol left this past summer and it went under "new management." Since that time, things have changed, some changes were good, others not so much so. We kept returning until tonight. After tonight, we will never go back. We had a terrible experience at the Backwoods Bistro in Lincoln, MI tonight, February 27th, 2015. My husband slipped and fell on a patch of ice near the entrance (within 3-5 feet of the front door). He came down hard on his knees and is limping. When I brought it to the attention of the manager, Kyle Kruttlin (who would hardly pull himself off his barstool), he said that a new Michigan law states that they don't have to clean a path for customers. He didn't ask if my husband was ok, if he could get ice or medical team or anything to assist. He just callously said that the "new" Michigan law says that they don't have to salt or clear a path for customers. Your lack of concern and callous behavior is one I don't wish to experience again. Thanks Mr. Kruttlin for your "concern" for customers--especially customers who have been Friday night regulars for the past 4 years. So, your callousness has lost the James family (owners of the business) over $3,500 per year in business from our family (and that's a conservative estimate). To the James family: please evaluate your "new management." He is not doing you any favors or assisting to build your business in a positive manner. Besides, this is the first time since Carol left that we have ever seen this "manager." He must spend every moment in the bar (which is odd that a manager would hide out rather than "work" the dining room on occasion ensuring your guests are enjoying their experience). read more

Great place for lunch andr dinner. Burgers are out of this world, pizza is great as it is in most up North places. Loved the prime rib too. I ...Just love it. I stop there every chance I get. Service is friendly . Makes me feel warm and welcome . I will definitly be a repeat diner here. The best place around Oscoda. It's a short drive up to Lincoln.and I see many deer along the way. Our party of six was quickly seated for a late lunch last weekend when there was a local event in town. Our orders were all over the menu and only one came later than the rest mainly I suspect because of the prep time. Everything came cooked properly as as usual it was all good. Been coming here for 16 yr and it is still 5 stars to us. To bad about Anne P. experience. I always give another chance and if it is the same or worse after bringing the issue to their attention, then I change my review. read more
