Great food and great service. The menu has something for everyone and the outside seating is great.

We were in downtown Canby for dinner on a lovely Saturday evening, and decided to try the Backstop's outdoor seating. The tables were clean and well kept, and the use of "half umbrellas" against the side of a building was a thoughtful touch. We were seated right away, and our drink orders taken right away. Our server did an excellent job, although he apologized for not coming back in time to bring me another Black Butte Porter (which I didn't plan to refill, anyway; even though it was excellent on tap). We placed an order for the "Bavarian Pretzel" appetizer, which was advertised to have a "mustard sauce" with it, and we also paid extra for their "Queso Cheese Dip". The bread itself was quite delicious, but the mustard sauce was just honey mustard salad dressing (disappointing), and the cheese appeared to be melted processed pepper jack cheese. The cheese dip was good with the bread, but we had a lot of dip leftover after the 3 pieces of bread. For a main course, I went with the Spicy Jalapeno Burger, but opted for Crispy Chicken, instead of a hamburger patty. The burger was massive, and consisted of multiple crispy chicken tenders, instead of one large chicken patty -- which is all good, but did make it tricky to eat, as the multiple pieces wanted to slide around. It was very good, but I think I would try the actual burger next time. I chose French fries for my side, and was disappointed that they were "battered" fries, which are not my favorite. The portion was also a little on the skimpy side. I would definitely come back again, even if there are a few small things that keep me from giving top marks. read more

This was a pleasant surprise. I have to go to wrestling tournaments and I'm not the biggest fan of the high school concession stand. I found this place near the meet on Yelp. It came through. Even at peak hour, the place had superb service. Everyone from greeter to the sever was super friendly. They took our order fast, and the food came out faster. If you think it would lack in food quality, you're wrong. The food is fresh, hot and delicious. I had a Greek chicken salad and it was large, quality ingredients and evenly dressed. I tried a bite of my husband's dish and it was also delicious. I noticed this place seemed very popular and busy but the service was so good! Wish we had something like this in our area, just good regular food with very good service. They had lots of beer choices too and many sport TVs but not so loud you couldn't have a conversation. The food was great. The service excellent. The decor and ambiance also great! It's a bar! You'd expect it to be noisy! There's exciting sports on TV, of course, you'll hear a loud screams now & then. Sometimes, you're old and not used to people screaming anymore, but sometimes you forget, there's younger people than you there. Heck, the Alaskan Fish Sandwich, that I ordered, thinking it was hamburger, I started adding ketchup and asking for mustard, only to find out they're FISH! LOL Even the fries were good. The House Salad that came with the Tuna Melt, were probably one of the best salads we've had in the last month! (Road Trips taken in April, this is May 1st, DOES count). Dog friendly! I stopped by with two large breed pups and the server was more than happy to bring out bowl of water and even refilled once or twice when she noticed the bowl was empty. Great service! She offered some good recommendations and food came out fast & hot. I was in between the fish tacos or Mac & cheese, I ended up going with the Mac. My grandma and I went for lunch yesterday. Service was good, very friendly. However when I got the bill I was shocked that the ice tea was $4.25. The BLTA was reasonably priced except it was super skinny with only a few fries. I understand inflation however I will spend more if I'm not charged $4.25 for a drink that costs $.25 cents to brew. Walking in the Backstop Bar & Grill is clearly family friendly. In our dining experience there are multiple generations of people from various walks of life. The music leans into country, and some more gentle sounding pop and rock. The staff were all warm, welcoming, and quick to seat us. We had calamari to start and the calamari was tender, and tasty. This app was definitely in line with American fried appetizers. I was impressed it wasn't overly oily. My son essentially filled up on these, struggling to eat much of his main course. They were really tasty, and paired well with the sweet chili sauce and lemons. The main dishes were quite good. My New Yorker was requested mid rare, and came out tender, and extremely well seasoned. The mashed potatoes tasted odd (similar to boxed but had lumps like real potatoes), the roasted veggies were delicious. The potatoes were the only downfall of my meal. My son got Coaches Club House! The sandwich was delicious, the portion could feed 3 people, and you need to really open wide to take a bite! The flavor was exactly what was desired. Toasted bread, perfectly crisped bacon, and the rest was all on point. He believes the fries could have been a bit saltier, but we all have our own opinions. Drinks: my son had a strawberry lemonade with refills, which he loved. I had a Blackberry Whiskey Smash that was tasty, and... calming. All in all the experience was quite wonderful. Came the RenFest, and wanted to find a place to sit and eat. There are two sides to this place. One for just adults, no kids allowed. Then the dinning side. I had 6 wings and fries. Did not disappoint. Wings were super crispy and fries too. Hubs had the swami burger on a gf bun. He was not impressed. Said he felt like it could have been saucy. The egg was fully cooked and not runny. Tots tasted like greasy balls. Kiddo had quesadillas w beans and rice. He enjoyed it. Place is busy! Service was fast. read more

so the customer service was fine. The atmosphere was nice for a sports bar. Type restaurant called the backstop with a baseball theme. The food however was some of the worst. I've had my wife ordered some sort of chicken, bacon, avocado wrap, which wasn't bad but then again with avocado and bacon on it, of course it had some flavor and you can't really go wrong with bacon on the other hand I ordered the brisket sandwich and it was one of the worst I've ever had it was not brisket at least not barbecue brisket. It was oven cooked steamed brisket that tasted like stew meat they cooled it down. They cut it into thick slices and then threw it on the flat top with a few bell peppers on top. Put a cover on top of it and steamed the hell out of it when it came it was so incredibly hot I couldn't even eat it, but it had absolutely no flavor. They put way too much water on it and steam the shit out of it washing all flavor away. The meat was waterlogged the bun they put it on was soaked because of all the water, the bell peppers were completely overcooked and mushy with no flavor and this was supposed to be a barbecue sandwich. It had no barbecue flavor. However, I did notice with one bite a small hint of barbecue sauce, but not enough to actually taste it. They did nothing more than to throw a slice of meat and some peppers underneath a steam pan on top of the flat top and boil the hell out of it. It's a shame because this is a cute little restaurant with lots of potential that I've heard lots of people talk about but just like my review they've all told me that it wasn't as good as it sounded or as they thought it would be it's a shame because this place has some potential they just need to hire a decent cook read more

I rarely ever write reviews, but I'm still so blown away by my family's experience at Backstop today that I feel compelled to say something. After spending a Memorial Day morning at a family farm attraction in Wilsonville, we took the nearby ferry into Canby to visit Backstop for lunch for one reason and one reason only: their website claims to have the best kids menu in the area. I was impressed with the friendliness of the staff, but was astounded by the efficiency of drinks and food coming out. I'm not just talking about my family's table. I kept watching in awe at just how quickly meals seemed to be arriving to tables despite the ever-growing size of the crowd patronizing the establishment. What a well-oiled machine! Oh, and the aforementioned kid offerings? My 8, 6 and 4 year olds all gave thumbs up to their buttered noodles, mac n cheese, and sliders, respectively! read more

Friend and I decided this was the half way mark between our homes and randomly picked this restaurant to have some drinks, food and conversation. The staff is top notch. I always ask the waitress/waiters what there favorites are or what they think of something on the menu because they're the ones to ask! First time here! Wanted fish and chips and these were really good! Food was hot and crispy. I had the fish and fries and my Honey had the Swami burger with tater tots. He said it tasted really good but the only drawback was the egg yolk was fully cooked, not soft. Not a deal breaker by any means! He said tater tots were tater tots, hot and crispy. Service was great. Friendly and really fast. 10 minutes from order to eating. We're not real big sports fans but those that are will really enjoy the decor and eleventy seven T.V's with sports playing. Not loud either. We were able to have conversation without raising our voices. Enjoyable place. Prices were OK. We paid $50.00 including tip and a soda. Didn't go to the bar side of the building. I did go to the restroom and it was CLEAN and smelled nice. That is a deal breaker for me. If it's not clean I will NOT be back. This one was really clean! Will be back! I wanted to love this place. But besides the excellent service the food is not worth a repeat. The decor had a sports bar chain restaurant vibe. We ordered a jalapeño chicken sandwich which was on their special menu. The chicken was tough and stringy. I could tell it was precooked and microwaved. Chicken only gets that tough when it's been microwaved. Every bite I had to pull with my teeth and hands to get a piece. We also ordered a BBQ combo meal which is 1/2 ribs and 1/2 brisket. I asked upon ordering if they smoke their meat daily I was told yes. The meat we got was reheated and maybe stored near fish. The brisket had a fish tinge. Very disappointing. Restaurants that serve GOOD BBQ, smoke and serve their ribs and meats day of period. No microwaving or storing over until the next day. The coleslaw had no flavor and was really watery. Our friends had the prime rib. They said it was grisly and cold. This is a busy restaurant and sports bar. I guess if you can't go anywhere else, order fried food that way it will be cooked as intended. read more

We have been eating at Backstop since we moved here from PDX about 6 years ago. Love your fish and chips!! Next time we will be faster to get the takeout since it was a little soft. Totally our fault. Steamed since we were a little slow on eating it. But the flavor of your fish is incredible!!! We love it. Club sandwiches, hamburgers, all excellent. Definitely our favorite.
