Convenient location and a decent selection of reasonably/thrifty priced used parts. I needed a replacement seat and some handlebar tape. Got a fine seat for $5 but the only option they had for handlebar tape was $40 so I skipped it. Staff wasn't very friendly, but they were helpful- not mean or rude, just don't expect bubbly enthusiastic support and you won't be disappointed. Dave at Backpedal is the REAL DEAL. This small business owner / bicycle technician expert / upcycled bike part artist has many talents and has quickly repaired more than a few of my bike problems with no problem. He charges a fair amount (maybe even too fair) for his work. I saw a negative review complaining about his work on someone's motorcycle, I mean e-bike. I think what e-bikers sometimes don't understand is how frustrating it can be for bicycle mechanics to work on these motorized vehicles since they're very heavy machines, lack standard parts and can even be a fire hazard. If I owned a bike shop, I'd put up a sign "no e-bike repairs". Sometimes he's a little bit of a retro-grouch and if you can get past his sometimes stressed exterior, there's a very sweet person inside! read more

Don't Spend a Dime At BackPedal Cycleworks! I've been excited all day to participate in the Black Liberation Ride for Juneteenth (even got my nails done). I get my sons bike down from the loft at 4:30 pm. I notice the tires are flat. I get my bike pump. I notice the valve cap on the back tire is broken. Now, I know its not essential, but the valve itself is extremely fragile. It's a gift for my 15 year old from my mom. I certainly do not want to risk damaging it. I load the bike into my car and head to BackPedal Bike Shop. I rush in (it's 5:30 I need to be at Irving Park no later than 6:00 pm). It's a tiny shop. There are two employees working on bikes. No other customers in line. I wait, no "hello." I finally say: Me: Hi, I just need a valve cap for my bike. Nothing, the man doesn't even look up. Me: Hi? (Again) Repair person: You probably need a new tube. Well... I have this bike and another one before you." Me: "No, I just need a cap." Repair Person: No, you need a tube. Me: I'm trying to get to a Juneteenth Event. I really just need the cap, can you please just sell me a cap? Repair Person: Oh, then just tighten the valve. You don't need the cap. I was very disappointed by this shop. They charged an arm and a leg to replace the tube on my rear tire and install new brakes onto my e-bike (just the install since I already had the parts). When I got her home, I got on for a rest ride and the rear tire immediately started deflating again! My partner and I took it apart ourselves and found a thorn still embedded in the tire. Then, when we replaced the innertube ourselves, we found that the brakes were not adjusted correctly, which put drag on my bike and slowed it down so much that the battery died 3x faster than it should have, so we ended up having to adjust both front and rear brakes ourselves anyway. Very disappointed. If you don't like working on e-bikes, just say that instead of charging a ton of money for doing a bad job. read more

Helpful and friendly staff, although it took awhile to be helped with only two people working. We went here for a specific part (bolt to hold front brakes into the frame) and while they did not sell this part specifically, the person helping up found an extra bolt and only charged $2 for the part. I appreciated them "looking out" instead of being stingy and insisting that they don't sell this stand alone part. read more

This is the best bike shop I have been to in Portland and I highly recommend this place! My bike seat and post were stolen off my bike inside my apartment storage room. He replaced my post and also gave me a nice donor seat he just received and installed it in 10 mins or less. My neighbor fixes bikes and there are some things he can't do, so he recommended this place. They quoted me more than they actually charged me for what I needed done, which was nice! Very reasonable price too. It took a little longer than expected (~a week) but they are busy thanks to everyone riding their bikes thanks to COVID right now! I got my pedal crank arms fixed (they were wobbly) on my cheap (but pretty) Schwinn Sidewinder. I had no idea why I was so much slower than my friends on my bike but now I know! Wow!! It's so smooth and easy to pedal now. This added at least 2MPH on my casual stroll speed, so now I can get more miles in whenever I ride. :) read more

I was riding my bike when I realized the brakes were sticking. I was only a block away from this shop so I stopped by with my child in tow. They refused to work on my brand new bike stating that it was too cheap and they didn't want to be liable for anything. They let me ride away with my 4 year old daughter in the trailer knowing my brakes weren't working right. Super sad face. read more

I made a trip over to this shop a few days ago in response to a Craigslist ad the proprietor had placed for a cargo trailer. The price was good and the item was on the wall on a hook just as described. This is a very no-nonsense kind of shop. They do repairs here, and they have a selection of trusty old mounts. When I was there they had a nice selection of the work-a-day sorts of 10-speeds and upright three speeds, and decent but no flashy mountain bikes that are really some of the best neighborhood bikes. Prices were reasonable for tuned up used bikes, and I will be recommending this place to friends looking for no-nonsense bicycles in the future. Not everyone wants a carbon fiber racer to go down the street to the grocery store, and this place gets that. There is a nice selection of parts and practical bike accessories, too. If you are a hard-core racer, this may not be your shop, but if you view bikes as intelligent and practical transportation, this may be a good place for you to visit. read more

I cannot say enough good things about the guys at Backpedal. I just moved to Portland and getting a reliable bike was at the top of my priorities. After browsing Craigslist for a few days and coming away with nothing of interest, I finally stumbled across one of their ads. The next morning, I visited their shop and was happy to see the bike was exactly as described. Before taking it for a test ride, the man helping me adjusted the seat down to what ended up being the perfect height for me. It's clearly evident that these guys have a ton of experience and I'm super happy to have made my purchase with them. What really won me over is when we were talking about a lock. I let it slip that I didn't have one yet, and I got some solid advice about what to get and the reasoning behind the recommendation. I left to do some research on my own and ended up coming back a few hours later to buy the exact lock he had recommended. So I'm in a wheelchair and this place was not ada accessible. The man at the counter watched me lift me wheelchair up the step while struggling, almost falling and did nothing to help until I was already in the store. I told him my budget was 100$ and he told me there was nothing there for me. Once he realized I was trans it appeared that he was not having it, he then stepped behind the counter and said we have nothing in that budget here. He proceeded to watch me go down the step in my wheelchair without any assistance. This is bike city and I will take my 100 dollars to another bike store and buy myself a bike!! read more

My first experience was exceptional, Second time I waited for 15 minutes and he did not open the shop on time, so I left empty-handed. Third time: Owner got confused with numbers, I got overcharged. He under-charges or overcharges unintentionally on numerous occasions. Feel free to speak up, it's better than you leaving unhappy. I only spoke up when he undercharged me. November 2014 Purchased my inner tubes at a good price, thank you. Good service except we both forgot to confirm which valve I needed, which resulted in me going to buy a bike pump, because my compressor fitting was incompatible and the adapter did not work. January 2015 I think better communication, and a good cheery, loving attitude, would go a long way towards covering the very few shortcomings. I believe he's in it for the love of bikes, and working with his hands, not the money which is a great start. read more

I am new to the neighborhood and haven't used my bike in a while so both tires had gone flat. Like most portlanders, I use my bike to get to most places I need to get, and having a friendly and helpful bike place close by seemed like an asset for this neighborhood. Sadly, my first visit to this bike shop was neither friendly nor helpful. I asked merely for a bike pump I could borrow, and the one he offered me would not latch on to the tire. I let him know that the pump wouldn't latch, and he just stared at me blankly. I asked him if there was another one I could use, and then he looked over to a display where several pumps were sitting and simply said "nope, that's the only one." I let him know that he might want to take a look at his defective pump and he said "ok" and went back to working on another bike he had in front of him. Thanks for nothing, dude. If such a small request is met with such indifference, I can say for sure I won't be returning for anything else. Hopefully something better moves in to what is otherwise a really friendly and growing neighborhood. If you're in the area and thinking about stopping by this shop, take the store name as a warning and "back pedal" your way out of there. read more

This place is ok. I went here to buy a bike for my daughter. The guy really wanted to sell her a pink one (hello feminine stereotypes!) even after she clearly said she wanted something blue. We chose one and I asked if they could install training wheels. He said he could and that it would take about 20 minutes so we decided to wait. An hour later and two different sets of training wheels we were finally on our way. I wish he would have told us it was going to take an hour, we would have went to the park and came back a bit later had we known. The bike is nice and prices were reasonable. On her first ride more than a few blocks the chain kept slipping off and we had to keep putting it back on. The wheels were poorly adjusted from the training wheel installation that I paid for. I ended up having to remove them and adjust things myself. I'm not sure we'll be back :( read more

I messed my chain and gears up pretty bad and the back tire wouldn't even turn. COVID-19 in full effect and I really need my bike. I called the shop to see if they were open and they were, so I brought my bike in. In less than 10 minutes he had me out the door with a new chain. He was very nice, quick and helpful. And, as always, Rick continues to do a superb job on bike repairs! Living in the wilds of outer SE Portland, but working downtown, it seems like I've visited every bike shop in between. Rick's work and attention to customers is the best I've seen. He's always been willing to order a part for me, give advice to customers looking to buy unusual or old bikes (which he used to refurbish full-time) and even help out a neighborhood kid with a flat tire without charging him a dime. Never ever go to Backpedal Cycleworks. I broke a spoke on Friday. Called the owner Jimmy on Friday and he said he could work on it Saturday morning. I showed up right when they opened at 11am. He said he would call me in a few hours. Didn't hear from him so I called him at 4:30pm and he said he had not even started. He then told me he could have it done by 2:00 Sunday. I show up and find out he had still had not even started it and it was in the back somewhere. I took it back and dropped it off at another shop. Never again. read more

Since the only thing I know about bikes is how to ride one (kinda) I have to trust a professional. They won't try to sell you something you don't need. That's important. Backpedal just overhauled my Bridgestone. It was affordable and honest work. David did a great job and the bike is running really well. I am writing this review because I wanted to find a way to thank them for the time they took to do a good job. I had just gotten an old bike from offerup and was super excited to fix it up etc. My friend and I, both BIPOC, went to the closest bike shop to me which was this, and the only person there was a tall white man wearing glasses, a scarf, voodoo donuts hoodie, and cargo shorts. He added everything up and wanted to charge us $300, which in mind was a little steep. I told him honestly I wanted to compare quotes which is what my intention was from the beginning. He dismounted the bike from the stand and shoved/pushed the bike so aggressively toward me it knocked me off my balance. My friend and I looked at each other and walked out. My friend became so angry he went back to the shop to talk to this man. The man did NOT EVEN LOOK HIM IN THE EYE and was scrolling on the phone while talking to my friend which means he absolutely knew what he did and there was absolutely no respect. This white man with the voodoo donuts hoodie (I wish I got his name) should be FIRED since he assaulted me (WOC) at a bike shop and couldn't even look apologize appropriately. I do not think ANYONE should support Backpedal. Instead, go to Gladys in NE who only charged me $100 for the necessary repairs. read more

Dave has taken care of all my family bikes from getting air in our tires as we ride by to over new bits and pieces for an old scwhin twin and everything in between. Not only has Dave never tried to up sell us on anything he discouraged me from buying a bike from him that I was ready to buy but he knew wasn't the right fit for me. He has also called his competitors for me to find parts I needed to put an old kid seat on my bike when he couldn't safely piece together what I needed. found this shop from an ad on craigslist for a 70s mixte peugeot. it was a 30 minute drive and SO WORTH IT. for as low as the price was i was amazed to see how clean it was and how well it ran. the parts were almost all original with no rust or pitting. the headset had no indexing and the bottom bracket (with original cottered cranks!) was like butter. the cables and housing were all done beautifully and with great attention to detail. the employee was kind, helpful, and answered my questions without a trace of that typical bike shop snark. great shop, would go right back if i needed anything else. read more

I want to support the local bike shop, I really do, but I just can't with Backpedal. Like other people reviewing here, I found this shop via Craigslist. The bike I wanted was gone, but the guy there said he had another frame and that he would build another bike. He might get it done that night. He didn't. And not until the next day, late the next day, after closing time. He said he would call. He didn't. When I cheerily showed up to see the bike he had built--my third time showing up--he just kind of stared off into space. I asked him to tell me what he had built. He said about two words: Shimano derailers and "no-name rims." Wow. Yeah, thanks man. Great description. I looked at the bike and thought . . . jesus, you have no idea who I am, do you? The guy had built a grandpa bike with a spring-loaded gel seat, imminently breakable adjustable stem and . . . "no-name rims." I actually felt insulted. I'm a marathon runner and a pretty good mountain bike rider. I'm not your grandpa. The guy there is probably a good mechanic, but lacks the person-to-person skills you need to run a good shop. The good folks at missing link recommended backpedal, as they have a lot of used bike parts...in my case, I needed a 26" wheel in a hurry. On entering backpedal, I was greeted by the owner, Dave. He took great interest in providing me immediate and timely service. I was out of his shop and back on the road in no time at all. I should have known right off the bat as I showed up a little after 10 and they still weren't open. Finally they opened after 10:40. Brought my sons bike in for a full tune up at over $250. Thought it was a lot but I don't know bikes and the cost so agreed to it as there was a lot of work to do. Told me he'd have it for a few days and let me know when done. A week later I messaged him and he said there were 14 bikes in front of me but should be done in three days. After the third day I messaged, no response. Finally got message back towards the end of the next day saying that he's working on it and should be done in another couple of hours. I showed up the next day expecting it to be fininshed and he hadn't even started working on it. I'm a small business owner, I get it it takes a lot of work to manage a business. But lie to me when you haven't even started the work. I took the bike back. I don't work with companies that lie like you. read more

Great little bike shop. I went in and bought a refurbished bike at a great price from Dave - and he also added a quick release for the seat at no cost. I couldn't pick the bike up until the next day because I was on a scooter, so he said he'd be happy to hold it until then. Before I could get back in to pick the bike up, I had a personal emergency that prevented me from being able to purchase the bike. I called Dave and informed him of my situation and he said it was no problem and refunded my money. I'm not sure how many shops would do this, but I was exteremely grateful and would recommend Backpedal to anyone. read more
