So I went to a family reunion up in Sitka and was extremely distraught to find out there were no Starbucks. Le Sigh. Thankfully, there were a few more than decent alternatives to chose from. There was a division among my family as to whether this establishment or Highliner was the best. I personally would say this one was. It's located in a book store in "downtown" Sitka. It can get packed due to all the tourists from cruise ships but the wait isn't that long. Their pastries were yummy... I don't think you could go wrong with any of them. Their coffee was rich, flavorful and really fresh tasting. Their baristas know what they're doing. I deduct a star because they don't have "iced" cups... they just put iced drinks in a normal cup.... irritating... read more

My favorite coffeeshop in Sitka (and there are actually a few to choose from!). Consistent lattes, divine baked goods at very reasonable prices (especially the pecan scone, bagels, flourless peanut butter and chocolate cookie), comfortable atmosphere for sitting with friends or working, and they even have a special kids' hot chocolate with sprinkles and kids books/toys! (No stroller ramp, easier to enter thru bookstore with stroller) I read some poor reviews of this place and unfortunately I did see some of the less than perfect customer service that was described - aimed at others while I was sitting. That made me sad because there's so much to like about this place. On the whole, the staff is great, and the newer hires (I could tell because they had to ask about ringing up) were friendly and cheerful. So go in with a smile and hopefully Backdoor will eventually be known as the friendliest coffeeshop in town along with it's other positive attributes! read more

We absolutely love this place. It's a great, funky, characterful little, rather paradigmatic "coffee house" with great decor and feel, and friendly staff. It also has great coffee and great savory and sweet foods at incredibly low prices. The same meal at a similar place in our area would have costs us close to twice as much, and the quality was simply superb, executed very well. The Backdoor is accessible through the bookstore or from the exterior. One minus is that its hours don't match the hours of the bookstore. The coffee is above average in flavor. I watched a pie being made, and I was so impressed by the care of the person doing it. It could have been in her own kitchen. The coffee is very good as are the pastries. This morning the noise level averaged 83 db, peaking at 96. Bare walls painted very dark oxblood and green. I couldn't unstand a word the people next to me were yelling to one another. Nothing $1500 worth of acoustic tiling and new paint wouldn't fix. read more

Such an adorable cafe at the back of the bookstore! Good mocha, tasty raspberry muffin and croissant, very friendly service. Hidden gem you should definitely try! My family also browsed the bookstore and bought a couple selections from their Alaskan novels section. Perfect for vacation reading. read more

My first trip to Sitka, and the local I visited took me to The Backdoor. All I have to say is that whoever makes those bars is a national treasure. I had a lemon blueberry bar, a cherry raspberry bar, a pecan bar, and a date bar (yes its true) and they were positively wonderful. I don't care how "chilly" the help is, the bars are worth it. I only wish I could go back for more. read more

Visiting Sitka, and really LOVED this place. Baked goods are heavenly and a wide selection of coffee and teas. I had camomile tea and was pleasantly surprised that it was loose leaf. As for the baked goods I treated myself to a hazelnut chocolate bar. Yummy and original. Staff were young baristas, polite and nice. The only *negative* was the decor. Very plain nothing exciting, not a big deal but this place could use a facelift. Overall however, happy experience. read more

We were here for a few days before summer season started and when nothing else was open early in the morning Backdoor was open. It was warm and welcoming when we were wet and cold. We had good coffee and a delicious cinnamon roll! I highly recommend it. There's also a small play area which was good for my toddler on those cold mornings. read more

Coffee is really great but it's best to go when owner isn't there! She is very intense. It's much calmer, more relaxed, and more enjoyable when she's not there and the lattées are more foamy when someone else makes them. read more

I wanted some good strong coffee, and I was able to talk into a nice medium strength coffee with a fun, random mug that they gave me to use. (First refill is free, after that, is about $1.75) I read in a prior review that there was Wi-Fi available... However, there is NO Wi-Fi here of any kind (at least when I was there.. September 2017) so just be aware of that in case that is an important feature. It can get quite busy, so I hear, but when I was there, it was just me and another lady who was tucked in with the really thick novel and appeared to be in bliss. I was enjoying my coffee (would've liked it a little stronger) and it was raining cats and dogs, which is quite common here in Sitka. Very seldom do you places use air conditioning, so if it gets warm outside, they just open the windows in the door, otherwise it's generally cool enough to wear a light sweater or something warmer, depending on the weather. When high school lets out, it can be overrun with teenagers and their texting and iPhones and excited chatter. The little café leads right into a small bookstore, and even though there's not much of a selection, overall, it's well organized, very tidy, and it's decorated in a tasteful manner with day old printing press featured in the middle. It has a nice Alaskan native section, and his some good maps, but everything is quite expensive, so the sticker shock can get you... read more

The lady with the dark hair and a tatoo on her right arm have ruined this place for us! She is beyond rude and treats you like your a major burden!!! I think she must be the owner as any employee that acted so poorly would be fired. Granted the food is nice but today the treatment was so terrible it made the experience of eating there very negative. Try the Homeport two doors down. The food is as good and they are pleased you came to dine with them. We will miss the cookies but they are not good enough to make us accept the rudeness!! read more

I wish I liked the Backdoor because of it's quirky atmosphere, bagel sandwiches, and mainly because it is located behind the best bookstore I have ever been to (sorry Powells Books). I refuse to give the Backdoor my business because the proprietor has always been rude to me. Good thing Highliner has great coffee, friendly staff, 25 cents off if you bring your own cup, breakfast burritos, and even better bagel sandwiches then Backdoor. read more

This is the best coffee in Sitka. We tried highliner first, but their coffee was too weak to drink. Try this cafe if you're visiting!

Nice coffee and the bookstore next door is a major plus. It gets busy during lunch so try and skip that time of day. Their daily bread special is worth the wait. Delicious ! read more

New owners in 2014 have brought a friendly cheerful attitude to this delightful cafe. Food is still delicious and well priced (at least for Alaska standards anyway :) ). They do take credit cards now, which is a plus! read more

Great little coffee shop downtown Sitka. My daughter loved the muffins and cinnamon rolls.

They make a great cup of coffee, latte, cafe au lait, and do it with great, friendly service.
