3.5 for sure! Small space, line almost to the backdoor. Most of the food was very good, bagel was a little tough on the teeth for a 6 yr. old. Banana bread was in need of more bananas and butter flavor. Strawberry-blueberry bars...so good! Caramel latte was on the bitter side even after adding more half and half, sugar. It's a coffee shop with some baked goods, and a good one at that! Despite the "breakfast & brunch", category, I wouldn't recommend coming in the back door if you want to eat something hot off the griddle. This is more of a snacky, grab-n-go kinda joint. Was excited to come here because of so many great recommendations. The atmosphere is nice, and the staff super friendly. I don't remember the name of my barista, but she kept bragging about how good she was at making coffee and tea drinks, being from Seattle. I had her make me a small chai, which took about 5 minutes. It looked good enough, till I realized half of the cup was filled with foam. After removing that into the trash, I tasted what was left in my mug, and it was nothing short of disappointing. She had given me a half filled, grande cup of steamed milk that had a sour flavor. For someone from Seattle (whatever that means), your knowledge of making something so basic was slim to none. I've been coming here seasonally for a couple of years. This cafe is a busy little place, so much so the staff can be overwhelmed, especially when the cruise ship is in town. The customer service is underwhelming but the coffee (drip-1 free refill) & pastry (mixed berry oat bar) more than compensate for it - hence 4 stars. Don't dare ask the barista (owner??) a question - her glare is daring and she's less than civil if asked a question (especially to the non-locals/tourists has been my experience & observation on several occasions). read more

Mention to a local that you're hungry and they will be quick to recommend the Backdoor. True to it's name, this small cafe is located at the back door of a book shop downtown. As all their food is homemade, you have to be early to get a meal! In the past, I have arrived by 12:45 to find that majority of the food I would order has been long gone. On this visit, my husband and I were craving something warm. We went around 3:45pm and the place was still packed! Everyone was reading and sipping their coffee/tea. We had the last piece of strawberry pie and an oatmeal, lemon bar and both were incredible. It's so pleasant to go to a small cafe where you feel like you've gone to Grandma's for a snack.
