I wish I could give this place zero stars. They have gone completely downhill. TL;DR: spent about 1500 on a pair of boots, tried to send them in to be resoled after a year, were told they were 'dead' and unable to be resoled (would have been first resole of the boot, and then they tried to upsell us on the tackiest boots I've ever seen in the email telling us their 1500$ 1yr old original soled boots could not be serviced - because of their own subpar original "craftsmanship." Thirteen years ago, my husband and I flew out to Santa Fe with one of our goals being getting him a custom pair of boots from Back at the Ranch. We had a delightful experience with Ann and a lovely pair of boots arrived by mail several weeks later. He wore them nonstop for a decade, taking care to regularly get them resoled by expert cobblers. After ten years, they were done. So we flew back out to Santa Fe and went back to Ann after breakfast at Pasqual's because we're no fools. We had a nice experience designing the boots and fitting my husband. The price was higher, but what can you do? Many weeks later, the boots arrived at our home in Virginia. They were a travesty. The craftsmanship was a crime and the fit was ... well, he literally couldn't get his foot back in one of the boots. The boots were also two drastically different sizes - visible to the eye out of the box. I reached out to Ann and, long story slightly shorter, they tried to adjust the boots twice and eventually had to remake them. The whole process took months upon months. A year later, the boots needed be resoled so we sent in pictures and asked to start the process. Direct quote: "unfortunately we cannot re-sole those for you as the leather around the foot is so soft and worn it would rip at this point." One year. 1500$ custom boots. We expected better from a) our previous experience, b) the craftsmanship BATR builds its brand on, and c) a 1500 pair of boots after one measly year. Guess we're going to Austin this time. read more

Let me start by saying that the people who work at the store are very nice. Let me continue by saying that they sold me a pair of boots that don't fit. While they tried to fix the problems (too narrow, arch too high) over the course of a year (I brought the boots to the store on our next trip to Santa Fe (we live on the east coast) with no success. I also mailed the boots back to the factory twice in the hope that they could correct the problem. Unfortunately, they were not successful. The bottom line is they sold me a pair of boots that are the wrong size and will not issue a refund or replacement. I would be very cautious before buying boots from them especially given the price point. read more

Wow! If you love boots..this will feel like heaven! Where God greets you in a pair of metallic boots from Back at the Ranch, while riding a white unicorn! The quality and designs are beyond! Can't afford them but it's definitely worth coming here and seeing what a perfect boot looks like. For me the experience was like being at a museum. Very contemporary but classic at the same time. The interior design of the place is stunning as well. There's a nice detail in every corner. I loved that I didn't feel pressure or ignored because I wasn't a potential client. The lady was very nice and proud of her boots. We both shared a great passion for boots. Forget about designer boots where you only pay for a known label. Looks can be deceiving. Who would spend $1100 for anything so uncomfortable followed by endless hassle? I don't want anyone else to end up with the same misery I got from a boot purchase at Back at the Ranch so I'm taking time to post details of my experience with them. Even more painful than their boots is their "service". My mother purchased a pair of boots for me at 5:23pm. They were closing and rushed me out the door saying to come back for a fitting in event of any problems. I wore the boots on a trip to Norway once and wanted to die from the pain. Upon return to Santa Fe I took the boots in to the store and was told by manager Ana to bring the boots back the next day for measuring and guaranteed satisfaction including a different pair of boots if the ones I bought remained so uncomfortable. I returned the next day and Ana suddenly had a very different story; instead of a fitting she now insisted that simply spraying the boots with water while I walked around the store was a sufficient alternative to measuring and fitting my boots. I pointed out her new convenient preferences would never qualify as a substitute for what was advertised and paid for. She asked where my pain had been; I reminded her that the advertised and paid for custom fit boot would remedy the pain and eliminate all risk of ongoing problems. Anna refused to measure my foot and said she would have the boots stretched an inch at the ball of the foot. I reminded her that one can pay $100 instead of $1100 for stretched boots. The price paid was for a custom fit pair of boots. I returned the next day unsatisfied that Ana had refused to measure my foot for proper fitting and found different employees. There was no reason to believe stretching the boots without a single measurement of my foot would resolve any problems. The other employees agreed and a measurement of my foot was taken. They ensured satisfaction and told me it would take 6-8 weeks to get my custom fit boots back. Instead I received a call in about 2 weeks from Ana. I asked why my boots were ready 4 weeks early. She said they had been stretched at the ball of the foot. I reminded her that my boots were supposed to have been fit according to the measurement of my foot taken in their store. I went into the store -yet again- to follow up. Ana was there. I asked if my boots had been fit according to the measurement of my foot taken in their store or not. She said I was "hung up on terminology". I reminded her that the "custom" terminology was hers and as advertised. I asked Ana again if my boots were fit according to the measurement taken of my foot in their store. She then answered 'yes'. I got to the car and found a note attached to my boots reading "stretch the ball of the foot as much as possible". My boots were stretched beyond any quality fit. Nothing about my boots was custom fit to the measurement they took of my foot in their store, so I asked for the owner's contact information. The owner, Wendy, refused any remedy whatsoever. Wendy hasn't put the dots together. My mother also bought a pair of off the shelf boots at Back at the Ranch. As they did with me they measured her foot in the store claiming it would take 6-8 weeks to receive her custom fit boots in the mail. (And it did take 6-8 weeks for my mother to receive her boots in the mail.) They probably don't custom fit a single boot for anybody. Instead they use the custom boot price tag, misleading advertising, and the showmanship of measuring of one's feet in the store to deceive people into thinking they are paying for and getting a custom fit boot. No doubt it also serves their misdeeds that most of their customers are tourists, like me and my mother, who have no way to quickly and easily resolve miserably uncomfortable boots when they return home and realize they've been swindled. At their boot price tag of $1,000-$10,000+ this place should have nothing but raving customers. Instead, Back at the Ranch is the epitome of the moniker earned by those who come to Sante Fe to take far more than they give, namely "Santa Fake". This place is AMAZING! They custom make the most delicious boots ever! They had the largest selection of leathers and exotic skins that I have ever seen. The meticulous measuring process will no doubt ensure that my boots fit my feet perfectly. Gone down hill. I have been pleased with the dozen pair of custom made cow boy boots that this company has made for me over the years. These boots are not inexpensive and mine have ranged in price from $4000 to over $8000 per pair, paid in full and in advance. In my opinion and based on my recent experiences, Back at the Ranch no longer deserves the reputation of being a quality custom boot maker. Specifically, in the last year, Back at the Ranch has made three pair of expensive custom boots for me that all have been totally unacceptable - the boots were not made as ordered (wrong height of boot, wrong toe of boot, etc.) or the boots simply did not fit. It almost seems to me that Back at the Ranch has become an entirely different company with much lower standards of service and lower quality of custom boots. In my opinion and based on my experience, I would seriously caution anyone who plans to invest in custom made cowboys boots not to rely on older positive reviews of Back at the Ranch.
