My panini was good but no one else seemed to like their food. My meal came with a soup of the day and the board said veggie but it was beef veggie soup. They changed the board after. My kids ordered the turkey sandwich and the cheese, chicken, fruit/veggie plate. The chicken was really dry and I was too full to try the turkey sandwich so not sure why it wasn't good. The pineapple that came with his kids meal was very fresh and delicious. The lemon bar was good and we will get that again. Service was excellent. They checked on us often. Ambience was nice too. I would go back for their panini and maybe order it with a salad next time. They also sell bread that looks good. read more

From Omaha and was doing Nebraska Passport when we noticed the Bakery. Went inside and it's a very nice place, very busy which I like seeing that and tells me how good the food is. We had bought some lemon bars to go and I have to tell you they are the best I've ever had, not too tart like some are. Wish I had the recipe. This is a hidden gem!! Food is amazing, I had the 1/2 sandwich and cup of soup combo. It was my first time trying mulligatawny, they have ruined me for all other versions of this soup. I even got 2 slices of desserts to go. The flourless berry cake and the cherry limeade, both were delicious. The service was very attentive and did a good job. I love small town Nebraska, and businesses like this are part of the reason why. This restaurant is my favorite place for food in Hastings. Menu is constantly changing and prices are reasonable. I've been here to meet up with people and by myself to relax and read a book. The space is clean and cozy with exposed brick, cheerful red tables an chairs, a happy "Made in Hastings" sign, and beautiful baked goods displays. Lunch menu is simple and varies each day, but always has great offerings. My favorite items I've ordered here have been paninis, soups, and desserts! I especially loved sharing a slice of pistachio cake and a maple pumpkin bar. They also sell various types of breads including focaccia and sourdough (9 kinds of sourdough were listed one day!). Thursdays are pizza nights and it seems like everyone goes wild for these days. I have yet to try the pizza but plan to before I leave Hastings! If you are coming here for lunch, I would note the limited hours for lunch and that certain dishes may run out if you are coming towards the end of lunch hours. Recently under new ownership and different hours. Our family loves brunch so we were excited to see they're open on Saturdays & Sundays now 8-2. We tried the Avocado Toast and Breakfast Burrito. This is slowly becoming one of my favorite small town sandwich shops. I have had food from here more than once since I work in town and I look forward to coming back often. The rotating daily lunch menu really gives the place a spark of variety and keeps my tastebuds watering to try some new menu items. The inside is quaint with a relaxing vibe. I have been here for lunch a few times and it is always very very good. This is one of those places that you don't expect to find in a small town, let alone in the middle of Nebraska. They have a changing lunch menu which usually includes a panini sandwich or a salad with a choice of a side. I usually order a soup for the side. Last time I was here, I had a chicken cordon blue panini with a tomato bisque for the soup side. Very excellent! Oh, it's a bakery so they have great desserts such as cakes and lemon bars. I had a peanut butter - chocolate cake which so rich and delicious. Also, in their display case is their freshly baked sour dough/ artisan bread. The foccacia is pretty good. We were in Hastings visiting family and stopped in the two mornings we were there. Both days the staff was so friendly and the frosted cinnamon rolls and pecan rolls were so tasty. I strongly recommend The Back Alley Bakery and Restaurant. Located downtown Hastings kiddy corner to the Fridley Theatre, this family owned business was founded in 2003. It has a charming interior decor of antiques and a brick wall. The cinnamon rolls are the best cinnamon rolls I have had west of the Mississippi. The caramel rolls are the best I have had in Nebraska. Be sure to ask to have those pastries heated. I think they taste good with a pad of butter. I noticed that one of the owners was present when I was visiting. I tend to find that businesses whose owners are present are well run. I am taking the trouble to post this review, because I think this business is an incredible find in a small town where independent businesses are not surviving. Back Alley is the place to eat in Hastings, NE. The food is very fresh, simple, and locally sourced. It has a wonderful small-town feel without feeling stuffy. The bread is made DAILY and they generally have a great day old section for those on a budget. This is a great place to meet friends for a simple lunch. Yes, you might be able to make some of the food from home, but the atmosphere makes the meal. I highly recommend the Blueberry Verde Salad and the cranberry/pesto turkey panini. Also the pomegranate green tea and their cheesecake for dessert. If I had to complain about something, I would say their cake can be a little dry and it's best to go before or after noon because the place fills up quickly! I guess third time's the charm! I was covering a trial this week and this was one of the few nearby places that I could walk over to during the lunch break. This time I got the Asian Tuna Salad Sandwich with the Leek and Asparagus Soup. The sandwich was actually a good portion this time and the soup was just amazing! I kind of wish I got a whole bowl of it instead of just a cup of it. The cheesecake square I tried this time wasn't as good as some of their other baked goods, but still tasty. Service is just okay, not very personable, which is why this rating is lacking the 5th star. I also bought a loaf of their pepper cheddar bread this time. Back Alley has all of the attributes of a great local establishment: free wireless, decent coffee, plenty of tables, power outlets and great conversations about organic farming and living in a small town . . . yeah, I was eaves-dropping. We would highly recommend them for wedding catering! We've also been there for lunch on a number of occasions and the soups are always fantastic. We chose 5 different things to indulge in and each was better than the last. My only regret is that my whole family would not appreciate blue cheese stuffed bread and so I compromised with a $5 loaf of garlic cheese bread that he sliced right in front of me for easy snacking.
