Man, let me tell you I went to go get a regular breakfast. I was in York for work and I saw this lovely place as soon as I walked in and turned left, I was sat down into a fancy old Italian feel with chandeliers, mirrors, darker aged furniture very refreshing somewhere new I ordered something so simple the Patty Melt I added bacon grilled onions, mixed with grilled mushrooms and it was delicious. Every bite I wanted another. I went home, thinking about it and dreaming about it lol and went back the next day. To my surprise, the owner was the one that made my burger. I love this place and I'm going to bring my mother and father here for a nice steak and lobster tail dinner. If they killed the patty melt I couldn't imagine what the fancy food taste like... This is a lovely institution in town. The locals come here to eat. Place is always busy and recommended by the residents of York. Truly worth visiting. read more

Love this old school steakhouse in York NE (about 2 miles north of I80)! We live in Omaha but try to stop here on the way back from trips out west. We had the prime rib and tenderloin dinners. Each was flavorful and cooked to perfection. Entrees come with choice of a soup or salad and a side. Prices are very reasonable. Service was excellent. Great service, extremely friendly staff, very good food. Had the Prime Rib buffet. The Prime rib was very tender, flavorful and plentiful. Large baked potatoes with accompaniments . I only spent a couple of days in York while attending the Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island last month and from what I could tell, Chances R may have been one of the only non-chain restaurants near the downtown area. It's like going back in time to a steakhouse of years gone by that still has that magic. The dining area is relatively small, but there is a separate room with a bar area and then a spacious backroom that looks like it is an event center or a beer hall probably used on the weekends. The outside has a bright red lit sign welcoming you in. Our meal was fantastic. I ordered the NY Strip and the hash browns. Do not sleep on the hash browns! Crispy fried potato that is perfectly seasoned and pairs great with the juicy steak. One of our table ordered the Prime Rib and it was massive! There's a little bit of something for everyone on the menu. From pastas, salads, soups, burgers, seafood, sandwiches and daily specials, I can see why the locals have been coming here for years. I've heard their specialty is the fried chicken dinner. Nobody at our table ordered it, but I saw several go by to other tables. We were too full for dessert, but this was a top notch meal that hit the spot. read more

This place will give you something to talk about. My understanding is it's the only bar in York...other than the bowling alley? So Chances R it is. If you like an abundance of stained glass, this is your place. Why limit stained glass to windows when you can use it to adorn the bar and as art throughout the restaurant. And don't stop at stained glass, let's also add in some red velvet like seating. I digress. Service was not good. Took 20 minutes to get a drink, close to another 45 for our food. Food was decent, but by the time it arrived we were rather frustrated we had to wait so long. read more

Went to Fairmont to look at an airplane that's for sell and decided to try some "local flavor" on the way back home to Lincoln. Found this gem in York. Amazing service and atmosphere. We split a large prime rib that was cooked to perfection. Server mixed up some nice cocktails (Old Fashion and Long Island Tea). I highly recommend this place. Loved this restaurant! The signature fried chicken dinner was fantastic. It came with 2 breasts (all white meat) and mashed potatoes and gravy. Ordered the beef vegetable soup and it was delicious. Although the decor is very nice, there were problems with the food and even more with the service. Have you heard of a French Dip with no cheese? The server failed to mention it was "extra"...really? It's fine. Nothing special, as far as the food goes. I had the big R burger and fries, with a beer for $20. The burger came out well done. I was not asked how I wanted it cooked. The rest of this review is for out of town visitors. Presumably locals know how to get in and get seated. If you are from out of town, you will follow GPS to the door of the restaurant. There, you will find a sign directing you to go through the doors of the pub next-door. If you do so, you will see a bar and a few tables. If you wait there... absolutely nothing will happen, no matter how long you wait, unless you are lucky, as I was. The one lone customer sitting at the bar eventually took pity on your clueless correspondent and directed me around the corner to where the host stand of the restaurant is located. From there, it was pretty straightforward. I recommend the wheat beer. read more

Sad to say, but for York, it's fine dining. apparently, patrons have never been outside a cornfield. If they had, they would not snub customers and physically cut off handicapped people while traversing the restaurant. Sandwiches were delivered, croissants four days old. Yummy. I visited here for lunch while my son was at a wrestling tournament. I was seated right away . I was given a menu after she took my drink order. After this point the service went downhill. I waited quite a while to get my drink and place my order and my sons to go order. If the restaurant was busy i would be understanding. It wasn't busy at all. I eventually received my sandwich. Rueben was stacked with corned beef and sauerkraut. It was very good. The French fries were frozen grocery store quality and taste. They tasted oven baked and bland. Our extended family is spread over eastern and central Nebraska, and each year we meet at Chances R for their excellent Thanksgiving buffett. We've been celebrating the holiday here for 9 or 10 years. It's always a packed house, but they do a great job moving people through the line, and it seems like they never run out of food. As it happens, I've never been to Chances R for a meal aside from Thanksgiving, so can't speak to how things are at the restaurant the other 364 days in a year. A quick shout out to this family restaurant, been around way before I was born. This is a small town restaurant that has lasted for many years due to the good service and great food. We had salads, soup, roast beef dinner, but the king of the night was the awesomeness of the smoked pork chop dinner, it was to die for, the best pork chop I had in years. My second or third time here. Overnighting here at fairgrounds vs going home with 3 horses so...back for mid-afternoon chow. Mud pie first course is different but good. Different because it's in a bowl. Otherwise similar build as any, with good coffee ice cream ball covered with caramel, Oreo cookie crust on bottom, all covered with whipped cream. Is good. Veg-beef soup is hearty and good. Fresh made rolls dipping in soup juice real good too. End cut, small size, prime rib requested. Really good time to stop here, mid-afternoon, with small number of other customers. Baked potato with butter and bacon (real bacon) is excellent as is prime rib and chicken fried steak. The chicken fried is thick meat portion and thin breading. Perfect on all here. Today's food experience here has to be one of our best anywhere for some time. read more

Showed up and waited 30 minutes to be seated. Which I was good with since I didn't have reservations. Waited 30 minutes to order, to be told they were out of prime rib. The waitress California said "didn't they tell you we were out of prime rib" I went with my grandma and I sat in the back nice area of the restaurant, they sat me in the dingy front area that can use some work, it was old and dated. I liked it. Large menu. Very nice waitress. Only have Pepsi products and no Dr. Pepper. Boo. Building is kind of cool. Lots of old stained glass. Place is huge. I noticed it has an event area as well. I'm a tiny snob when it comes to restaurants using a booth/table in the middle of the dining area for waitresses to roll silverware, count money, etc. I think it's kinda tacky and I feel like I'm being rushed because someone is obviously doing their side work or trying to end their shift. Especially when a waitress comes to serve you, and then plops back in their work space. Can't they do that somewhere else out of view of the customers? Food was fine. Fries were kinda mushy and bland. My club sandwich was fine. Nothing spectacular about it. My mom got a fried chicken meal with mashed potatoes and corn. She said the same thing. Food but nothing overly special about it. Bathrooms are clean. Parking is weird since it's on a street. Had to park around the corner. No big deal in August. Went on a Friday evening. Got there at 5 pm, seated in the diner looking portion of the restaurant. Waitress was on the newer side. But was pleasant. She took our drink order, of grasshoppers. As we hadn't had one in a while and it sounded good. It was not, flavor was ok but they didn't use ice cream they used crushed ice and you couldn't even get it thru the straw. I ordered the prime rib and my wife the chicken fried steak. It took over an hour and a half to get out food, came out at 630. The chicken fried steak was the worst my wife had ever had. Burnt and tasted like month old vegetable oil. My prime rib wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. Will not ever be coming back. Wasn't worth the trip read more

Service was friendly, although not very attentive. Fans were off, so air flow was poor, and a few flies were a constant annoyance.
