I visited bacchus for the first time recently. We arrived shortly after they opened and didn't have a reservation, but we were seated immediately, with the understanding that we'd be done in 1.5 hours, which was no problem, since service didn't take long. They brought us rolls, which were delicious, and butter while we waited for our food. We started with an appetizer of stuffed mushroom with roasted peppers and mozzarella, which was delicious. I ordered the chicken piccata and my bf got penne carbonara, which he really liked. My chicken piccata was flavorful and the chicken was cooked well so it wasn't dry. The only drawback was that there was a lot of onion in the dish that overpowered the capers, which is what I'm looking for in a piccata. The restaurant is small, so I would make a reservation before going again, but the ambiance was nice and the staff were friendly. Bacchus was good. It's a lowkey spot, very cozy vibes and not too busy on a Monday evening. The wait staff was on the slower side, which is surprising due to the fact that the place wasn't very busy. The menu is large and filled with Italian classics. The wine list was extensive. They do not allow any requests to the menu... for example, my friends chicken piccata came with a salad and they would not let her sub that salad for pasta. Nothing about this experience blew me away. The dishes are very simple for how high priced they are. I paid $24 for a bowl of spaghetti noodles with mushrooms and chicken. The menu does not get much more complex than that. To make a whole meal, you'd almost need to order an entree, a pasta and a side seperate, which would probs cost you around $60 My meal was good-- I was happily it and the quality was just fine, but it wasn't the kind of place I'd likely return to. There was nothing particularly bad about this experience, but also nothing blew me away. Next time, I think I'll just make the same tasting dish at home for a fraction of the price. read more

It probably took about 10 minutes to get seated but that's because they were packed, so no complaints with getting seated. Environment was fine, and noise level was reasonable. There was free street parking when we went which was helpful. I was in the mood for veal scallopini, while the rest of my family went with chicken Marsala. This was my first time dining at Bacchus. I dined here with a group of colleagues to celebrate a milestone work anniversary. The food was authentic and fresh. One dish that received several positive reviews was the artichoke appetizer for its robust flavor and preparation. Our server was attentive and provided friendly service. From the outside you expect to enter someplace dark but the amount of sunlight coming through the front is impactful...it creates this vibrant atmosphere (ambiance), which for a neighborhood joint really elevates your initial impression. Truly a nice vibe we walked by the bar to our booth near the rear. We began with drinks and some pate and a goat cheese and beet salad w/ greens. We then moved on to the most amazing duck breast which could not be done better anywhere. We also ordered the scallops over prosciutto (superb) and some spaghetti w/ butter and parm and also a side of sauteed endive w/ cranberries we shared. All were great. 5 stars w/ no hesitation. Maybe it would be good to someone else, but that's not what I wanted. It was honestly super gross and I could not eat it. We wish this place wasn't so far away. We were in Richmond doing some shopping this weekend and decided to find some Italian food before heading home. We were concerned when they opened and asked if we had a reservation. It's a small place but they were able to seat us as a walk in anyway. The 4 of us decided to share food since left overs weren't going to work on the long drive home. The duck was amazing! So tender.. the reduction was incredible. We ended up using that sauce on everything else too. But on its own each dish was delicious. It was all cooked perfectly and so very flavorful. We'll be back when we can. read more

We were able to snag a table at around 5:15 on a Saturday evening without reservations, they did tell us we would only have til 6:30 before another group came, but that was enough time. The restaurant was dimly lit and felt very intimate. We were seated in the back right along the wall where they were cooking on the other side. We started with the broccolini, which we were fairly disappointed with, it was too al dente, and basically bathing in a bowl of oil/melted butter. For entrees, I got the crab pasta which was a fair price at $24. It was pretty good, but it kind of tasted like a regular tomato sauce with crab just added- it wasn't a very cohesive dish, but I didn't dislike it. Service was prompt, attentive and friendly throughout. The roasted garlic and rosemary white bean dip was whipped cream smooth with such rich depth of flavor, making for a delicious started. The tomato, feta and eggplant penne was al dente to a T, bursting with fresh rustic notes with bright tomato acidity, earthy eggplant and pops of salty, creamy feta. This was my first visit to @bacchusrva and it did not disappoint! Immediately upon entering through the thick, velvet curtains the ℜ nature of the atmosphere wraps around you. The dimmed soft lighting , tẃíńḱĺíńǵ fairy lights, and matte black painted metal tray ceiling all contribute to the romantic and vibe that is so appealing. The galley-style layout of this italian hotspot puts you up close to the cooking ‍‍ action, and all the amazing smells that go with it. The air is heavy with garlic , wine , and butter that combine to create an amazing that will have you eagerly anticipating your meal. The menu here is extensive, so it was hard to choose. After a lot of deliberating, I went with the veal scalopine . The veal was pounded thin and then breaded (almost schnitzel style) and then in lemon and brown butter and sprinkled with a generous helping of artichokes and capers. I couldn't help but eye the pasta that arrived next to me, though (penne with marinara dusted with Parmesan ), which also smelled amazing. For dessert, I had the creme brûlée, which was really incredible. The top was toasted perfectly, and the custard had a really nice thick but consistency. The flavor was great as well- extra kick of vanilla, and almost marshmallowy. I had a bite of someone else's , though, and was the best thing I ate all night. It was almost like an ice box pie in temperature and consistency, but was topped with a thick, dark chocolate GANACHE and drizzle that was . A Farewell to Bacchus -- and to Hope There are restaurants where the food speaks. At Bacchus, the food mumbles incoherently and then dies in your mouth. I arrived with low expectations and left wondering if I'd somehow offended someone in a past life. Our reservation was for 8:00 p.m. on Father's Day -- a date that should have signaled celebration. Instead, it became a quietly operatic farce. We were seated promptly, which in hindsight may have been the restaurant's final act of competence. Our drinks -- one glass of wine, a Coke, and a club soda -- arrived after a mysterious ten-minute vanishing act, at which point we were told the kitchen would be closing in ten minutes. Nothing stokes the appetite quite like a ticking clock and the subtle suggestion that you're inconveniencing the staff by being there. The menu read like a eulogy to inspiration: penne, penne, and more penne. We began with the "charred rare sirloin," a dish so audacious in its poverty of substance that it should be considered conceptual art. Five nearly translucent slivers of beef arrived, each whisper-thin and curled at the edges, as if even the meat itself were recoiling from the plate. It came with a slick of something allegedly chimichurri, though it had the texture of hospital-grade aloe vera and the color of regret. The tapenade with crostini was, charitably, a salt lick in drag. The crostini were the kind of weaponized toast points one might use to chisel ice from a sidewalk in February. Then came the entrees, each one a sonnet to mediocrity. The butter penne was butter penne. The pesto penne was butter penne with something green in it. The sautéed artichokes appeared, looking vaguely stunned to have been invited. The "Italian sausage with penne" lacked sausage altogether -- an omission that might have gone unnoticed had it not been the name of the dish. Our server offered an apology and said she wouldn't charge us "for it," which I took to mean the entire dish. A rare flicker of generosity? Not quite. The sausage did eventually arrive -- ten minutes later, as if it had just come off a break -- but I was still privileged enough to be charged for the cold, lonely penne that had been sitting on the plate like a bored dinner guest waiting for its date to show up. Apparently, at Bacchus, even the sausage has a union -- and the pasta pays the price. To her credit, the server offered us a complimentary dessert -- a gracious gesture that almost redeemed the evening, until the crème brûlée arrived. It was crème, certainly. But the brûlée had either been forgotten, forgiven, or tragically misunderstood. A soft custard sat beneath a loose sprinkle of granulated sugar, like a torch had been waved in its general direction before the kitchen staff clocked out. We paid, we left, we mourned. I've been to Bacchus before, but this visit confirmed what I had long suspected: the restaurant is not declining -- it has simply given up. It no longer cooks; it shrugs. It no longer serves; it apologizes. Bacchus is a restaurant only in the technical sense. Spiritually, it's an obligation with a wine list. At Bacchus, the gods may still be watching -- but they've clearly stopped tasting. read more

This is probably my favorite place to eat in Richmond. The service is fantastic and the servers are very educated about the menu and give great input about each dish. But most importantly THE FOOD. Oh my goodness. I ate their last night and am ready to go back again tonight. I would recommend a reservation if you plan on arriving later than 6 or if you have more than four people dinning. The place is small and cozy. The give out portions that match the price and again everything is delicious. When I think Italian I normally go pasta but the regular fish and meat entrees here surpass the hearty pasta dishes for me. The first guests to arrive asked for a highchair. They said they don't have highchairs or even a booster seat. Would have been nice if they mentioned that when they took our reservation. The family with the kids had to pass on the dinner. One child was only 18 months old & really needed a high chair. For those of us who stayed the food was really good and so was the service. I understand if a restaurant wants to discourage small children but they really need to share that they don't provide highchairs. read more

I was in town for the Richmond marathon weekend and needed a large reservation for my team of runners. I made a reservation several weeks in advance and they were very accommodating for our large group (of 13). The portions were HUGE and food was good. I took home about half of my dish. Service was friendly. I really like how many pasta choices there are here - something for everyone no matter what type of pasta, sauce, or protein you like. Love this place! It's usually fantastic, but was served some raw sausage during my last visit. No biggy, it happens! I planned to just move them to the side, take them home, and cook them up myself. I let one of the wait staff know of the issue and to ask for a to-go box. Before I asked for the to-go box, their response was "what do you want me to do about it?" No apology whatsoever. That felt a little inappropriate, considering this was a potential health hazard. I didn't ask for it to be comped or anything, was still happy to pay for it because I still get to enjoy the dish either way. Regardless, I let another one of the waitstaff know and they were very apologetic and offered to remove the dish from the bill, which was very nice. Still really love this place and wish it the best, but I left that evening with a bad taste in my mouth regarding the one wait staffer. read more

If I hadn't walked into Bacchus's doors in Richmond, I would have thought I was in Italy. Been meaning to try this spot for a while and super happy it worked out on a rainy Sunday evening for date night. We requested to be seated upstairs - definitely ask if this an option when you're being seated - they have a small cozy balcony area with string lights that overlooks the restaurant and kitchen and makes for a lovely romantic ambiance. We ordered the Portobello appetizer with roasted reds and mozzarella, the Creamy Pesto with penne, the Wild Mushroom & Ricotta spaghetti, and a side of broccolini with butter, parm, and almond slivers. Absolutely enchanting meal! The food was incredible - rich, dreamy sauces coated the perfectly cooked pasta. We especially loved how the mushroom spaghetti dish was served - a mound of creamy ricotta sat atop the spaghetti and mushrooms, the whole thing covered in parmesan. The broccolini was a delicious veggie side to cut through the heaviness of the pasta dishes. Service was excellent as well - little details, such as requesting more bread and butter and packing the leftovers the way we asked, were graciously taken care of. For an indulgent, romantic, and mouthwatering intimate date night, Bacchus is the place to be. Five stars, we'll definitely be back. Other notes: portions are huge (we had a ton of leftovers) so I recommend family-style ordering. This is a hidden gem in Richmond! It's been around forever and such an awesome spot. I have been about 3-4 times throughout the years and I always forget it's here! They have great pasta dishes and the BEST calamari appetizer you've ever had. I also love the Tuscan kale salad, I get it every time! They also have good wines and cocktails to choose from. Bacchus is so good!! I love coming here for dinner. I always order the bacon Gorgonzola Caesar for the table to start. It has crispy bacon and huge chunks of soft Gorgonzola tossed in Caesar dressing. For my meal, I always order penne carbonara. Bacchus is one of the few places to order carbonara here in Richmond and it is always really good. I usually am lucky enough to get the same sweet server each time- she accommodates my request to add mushrooms whenever she can. It is very much appreciated. I went here last night and everything about my experience was perfect. We did their happy hour deal which is any choice of two pastas and a bottle of wine for $45. I have to say that we both left with very full, happy tummies. They brought us out fresh baked bread to start. I thought the portion size was great, and was surprised that we gobbled all of it down. We got the spinach and cream penne which was topped with toasted almonds. The texture of the pasta was a perfect Al dente, sauce was not overly creamy and heavy, and the almonds provided a nice texture. We also got the Italian sausage pasta with spaghetti and the red sauce was by far one of the best red sauces I've ever had. The sauce had good levels of acidity, and the correct amount of sweetness and salinity. The sausage had bits of what I think was fennel seed inside and they provided a nice crunch within the sausage. The combo was heavenly! Overall, this is the perfect spot for a date night and I would highly recommend it to anyone in the area! read more

I had excellent wine, but we started with regular bread. The bread was literally frozen on the inside and steaming hot on the outside. The calamari we ordered was good but weirdly served with a side salad (odd for an app). Both of us were underwhelmed by the entrees. I had the creamy pesto penne with chicken (which I could have probably made at home). The one special touch was the crispy crunchy almonds on top! The pesto was just okay, wouldn't order it again. My friend had the duck. A few bites in she wasn't even certain it was duck. I tried it, and the flavor was definitely duck, but the texture wasn't what I was used to. Overall, also served with a small side salad, and also just okay. She packed it up to-go. The dessert menu was underwhelming so we didn't get one. I looked, and there was nothing stellar there.
