Babe's is a historically significant restaurant and should be on your must visit list. As a tourist visiting the Dallas area, to one of their several locations. The staff is great. The overall design and food presentation is a big thumbs up. Could I personally do a better version of each component? Of course. Each of the sides, also the chicken, could use some improvement. Mashed potatoes with the consistency of wallpaper paste. Salty and bacon greasy (probably) canned beans. Corn that might be fresh or might be out of a can. So so gravy. Okay fried chicken. And if I lived in this area, maybe come just once or twice a year. But if I had guests visiting, I absolutely would bring them here for a taste of Texas culture. They would love it. It had been years since my last visit here and I remembered really enjoying it the first time. Unfortunately, this return visit got off to a rocky start. When I arrived, I was waiting on two family members who were about 10 minutes away, so I went ahead to put our name in. The hostess told me I could go right in, which made it seem like a table was ready, but she never took my name or wrote anything down. After I explained I was waiting for two others, she said "okay" and then started taking names and numbers from other parties, leaving me off to the side without her saying anything else. It was odd, so I sat down. After sitting for maybe 5-7 minutes, I noticed she was taking names for parties of 2 and 3, which was confusing. When I asked about it, she said she already had my party and name even though she had never taken it. At that point, it felt like the Chinese restaurant episode of Seinfeld, where somehow you're waiting but also not really on the list. She finally took my name for a party of three and quoted a 30-45 minute wait, without accounting for the time already lost. My family members arrived shortly after, and we still waited another 20 minutes or so. Once we were seated, the service didn't improve much. Our server was extremely slow, and everything came out at once. We barely had time to get drinks, salads, or biscuits before the food arrived. Refills and additional requests felt more burdensome than attentive. While the food and drinks themselves were great, the overall service felt very disorganized and subpar. read more

This has become our must stop on the way to the airport with our coastal college attending kids. The fried chicken is perfectly brined and always crispy fresh. The classic fried chicken gravy compliments the mashed taters and biscuits equally well. Creamed corn has the perfect texture and right amount of black pepper to offset the sweetness. Biscuits are grandma's kitchen'esque. Not sure we love the new version of green beans. Previous version was made with the flat Italian green beans and often tasted burnt. I have never experienced anything like it! For starters, the staff was phenomenal! Our waitress was so sweet! And while we were enjoying our feast, they even broke out into dance! LOL! Dinner and a show! I will say, there is no menu...I know, bare with me! But the entire meal is family style, and all you choose is your protein which is then brought out family style as well enough to feed the table! At first I couldn't believe it and then they brought out the salad and then followed all the sides! And I am talking mash potatoes, green beans, biscuits, gravy, corn! It was endless! And sure enough when we finished something, it was quickly picked up and refilled! I ordered the catfish and my partner got fried chicken and let me just say...10/10! They brought out the crispiest fried fish and chicken ever and it was enough to feed us both with leftovers! I would definitely recommend this place for any family celebration or outing with friend! A salad is off re ed to start the meal. When a bowl is empty the server will ask do you want refills. You will never leave hungry, only if you have will power not to over indulge. Food comes out quick because its a small menu with a choice of entree between fried chicken, smoked chicken, chicken fried steak, and chicken tenders. I did unfortunately have to take 1 star off for the desserts. As outstanding as the chicken is...the desserts weren't good. Some friends recommended this spot so we all went here for a date night. The inside is very western feeling, and I love the ambience. I really like the idea of just choosing your chicken and then them bringing out the different sides and biscuits. The biscuits were definitely my favorite part. The corn was good, but the mashed potatoes were not so great. The chicken tenders were nice and crispy. The server was attentive. I visited with my elderly parents who think of Babe's like a favorite old chair... e.g. "It's absolutely perfect". (I tend to think of Babe's more like an old shoe; comfortable, but out of style). If kitschy Texas signs, line-dancing waiters, and canned YMCA music is your thing, you have found a home. They serve both kinds of food, "Fried Chickens" and "Chicken-Fried Steaks". DON'T ask about side dishes because that is the same for every order and served family style; Mash potatoes, green beans, biscuits, cream corn, and salad. My parents LOVED the salad. (I recognized it as a zero-frills tossed iceberg salad with a simple oil and vinegar dressing). Everything was fine. Greasy chicken and CFS w/ cream gravy. It was super ok. Almost satisfactory even. But I found the whole experience kinda tired, from the stuffed chicken taxidermy (which was everywhere) to the fake "Texas Secede" road sign. If that style is your ballpark, well... "Play ball!" We had chicken fried steak, chicken tenders, chicken fry, and all the sides. Everything was delicious. Excellent, a lot of food. The biscuits were so good, though, with the butter and the honey. Yum. The chicken tenders were delicious. It's a lot. I think eight pieces came with it. They're small, but they were excellent. The chicken fried steak, according to everybody, was delicious, and sitting with the fried chicken is a lot of food, so make sure you go hungry. The place is charming. I love it, really busy though. Our waitress was terrific. She was swamped. She did a great job, though. The only downside to it was that it was hot in there. I know there were many people, but it was still warm. We haven't been to Babe's in years so we wanted to take our girls to see if they enjoy it as much as we did. We stopped by on Sunday at 4:30 pm and were about to be put on a short wait list but they accommodated us quickly. Our server was prompt and constantly checked up on us. We ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, Fried Catfish, and Chicken Tenders. The biscuits and salad were a good start. Don't forget to add honey (already at the table) to your biscuits. I didn't love any of the main dishes, but I couldn't get enough of the Creamed Corn. The Mashed Potatoes and Gravy were okay, but I was not a fan of the Green Beans. That's highly unusual because I love vegetables. I couldn't eat much of the Banana Pudding as it was too sweet and was missing crispy vanilla wafers. It was a fun scene with the decorations on the walls and the staff dancing and singing. I wouldn't go back but would recommend it to those celebrating birthdays, graduations, etc. read more

The potatoes are good, the corn is laden with sugar, and the beans are also well seasoned. It is too bad. These lovely vegetables are delicious without all the additives. To make matters worse, the sides seemed canned--there was nothing fresh or homemade about them, which only added to the disappointment. Additionally, they have some frustrating takeout restrictions, which made the whole experience even less enjoyable. This place is an old fashioned experience. Babe's sells a simple Deep South themed menu that is all you can eat for a reasonable per-person entry fee. An excellent choice for groups or for parties, especially given the size of their building. You can also ask for more of anything and everything you get, except the chicken, free of charge. The staff here are very friendly and seem happy to be there. 8/10, only because while it's a fun place for a group and it's basically a Brazilian steakhouse for fried chicken, I wasn't blown away by anything I was served. read more
