We wanted some authentic Ukrainian food and this hit the mark. Ambience is not there but food was outstanding.

The worst prepared-food store I have ever tried in Winnipeg! It's shocking how Ukrainians can…read moremanage to cook Ukrainian food so badly. The chebureki were terrible -- extremely greasy, oil was literally dripping from them. Impossible to hold in your hands; they just fell apart. The pork dumplings didn't even last 3 minutes before the dough came apart and completely fell apart. And what you call cabbage pies is a whole different story. I have never tasted a worse dish in my life. There was almost no filling, and whatever was there was bland, dry, and completely tasteless -- no soul at all. We waited about 40 minutes for this "pleasure"! In the end, all the food went straight into the trash along with a significant amount of money. Come on -- this was supposed to be food for children! A terrible store, terrible prices, and terrible service. Complete lack of respect for customers. If you decide to open a place with Ukrainian character, to represent values and showcase our culture -- please add effort, responsibility, and at least a drop of professionalism. Because what you are offering now is a disgrace, not Ukrainian cuisine.

I just *had* to yelp about this place because it was one of those experiences that just get weirder…read moreand weirder. Visiting on business, my best friend was enjoying her last few days in Winnipeg before she moves to Thailand, and I asked her where we could get good perogies in town. I figured she'd lived here all her life (in between moving to Cambodia, China, and falling in love with a Tanzanian) so I'd trust her judgement. To get to this place, you certainly do have to trust your judgement! Ever had to enter a senior's place to get your perogy fix? When in Winnipeg, don't judge. Because the perogies and borscht might just blow your mind. Enter the building, take the elevator to the parkade, find the signs to the Rec Centre and "Jessie's Kitchen", walk through twists and turns to find a small kitchen/room overlooking the pool. Jessie cooks everything herself, and it's obviously homemade. Reasonably priced - apparently this place used to be located on a regular street but moved here - probably save on rent? It's not the most glamourous of places, but hey, when the food is good and it's $36 (incl tax) for two combo plates + borscht, don't complain! The perogies were great, but I'm not as huge a fan of the meatballs - but my friend's kohlbassa was HUGE! So, follow the signs for something a little different.

We have been here several times & both times the perogies were fabulous but very expensive ($9.00…read morefor 6 of them). The desserts were fabulous & very reasonably priced. The portions were small however, so the 2 of us ordered 3 desserts & shared the third. If you go to Jessie's for the ambiance you will be quite disappointed, it is kind of like a mom & pop Chinese food place with on many tables & chairs in the place, with hand made decorations on the walls. It is in the bottom of an apartment building where mostly the elderly live, so they frequently eat here when they don't want to cook. It also kind of doubles as a make shift grocery store where the people who live in the building buy packages of cookies or candies. I bought a package of jellies once but when I opened them they were hard even though the package was sealed. We also were there several days after Valentines Day, & the cookies that they were selling were like from a bake sale. There were no labels on them saying the ingredients & they were just in little zip lock bags. The cookies were the same price that they were before Valentines Day. I pointed this out to the waitress so she discounted them, but she said the owner usually doesn't do this. I go here because they make great perogies, not for any other reason!!
