We started the meal with a Thai tea. (Always safe to have with you if something exceeds your spice level.) It wasn't too sweet and very creamy. Our appetizer of choice was the tapioca dumplings. Very good. Second favorite bite of the night. A great chew with a delicious chili filling. We ate them with the company of the fresh lettuce, they definitely were too small for the lettuce given to us so recommend breaking it in half. May seem obvious to some but... ya know. Next our red coconut curry was brought out and this is just perfect. Sooooo good. Not a drop was left. Just a really satisfying flavor that tastes fresh and creamy at the same time. Lastly the green mussels. Yum. The shrimp flavor was very strong in the sauce and paired nicely with the sticky rice. I will say the herbs made this the perfect bite. So I would have preferred to see more in this dish to balance everything out. Something else was that this dish has two chili symbols on it so I was prepared to be sniffling a bit, (hence why I ordered the Thai tea) but I wasn't at all. So if you prefer a more spicy dish, I would try to request that. Overall great atmosphere for a date night and staff is very attentive and efficient and nice. We came w no reservation and were sat in less than 10 min despite them being busy. Very grateful for that, thanks to Baan Mae!
The food and seasoning was also good. We ordered the noodle, fish curry and skewers, and we liked them. Interior is a bit tight but the staff are nice and accommodating to our request. A cute hangout spot for friends and so everyone stays for a while - I recommend making reservations so you don't have to wait forever.
I'm always excited for Lao food, and Baan Mae did not disappoint! I came here with a friend for a birthday dinner. Even though they are pescatarian, there were still plenty of options on the menu for both of us. We started with Thai green teas, the Sakoo, and the Enoki--both starters were delicious. For mains, we shared the Fried Catfish Laab and the Pad See Eaw with Shrimp. Both were delicious, though I preferred the flavorful laab while my friend loved the Pad See Eaw. My only minor critique was the sticky rice; it was a bit too soft and stuck to my fingers. That said, the Jeow Bong I ordered on the side was incredible. I'll definitely be stopping by often to grab some to go for my home-cooked meals! I'll be dipping everything with Jeow Bong! As someone who grew up eating Lao food, I can confidently say this is the real deal. The space is very small and intimate. We were practically sharing conversations with the table next to us, so I highly recommend making a reservation
I did take-out and wished I sat at the bar area instead! For a small restaurant, the decors made it feel very welcoming and inviting with the food scene. The pad see ew was different than typical but the noodle texture and flavor were delicious! Service was great too.
Such fun and exciting dishes!! So many I wanted to order, textures and flavors are amazing. If you like punchy but hearty dishes this is the place to go. The salad was spicy, sweet, crunchy, just everything you'd want. The crab curry was really good at first but the flavor became too much, super rich and crabby. This review is kind of overdue so I don't remember more about the dishes, I just know I enjoyed this meal THOROUGHLY. Try this place out!!
Checked this out before a concert at The Atlantis last night with my daughter. I'd suggest making a reservation ahead of time since there's not tons of seating. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and didn't have to wait to get to table. Inside was cute and the food was delicious! Tried the DC Tap Water drink which was yummy. Shared an entree so we would have room for dessert at the end.
DC has an array of restaurants featuring the amazing Southeast Asian cuisine and Baan Mae is one of them. I am so glad I found this cute little restaurant on my trip. The interior is cozy, when it's busy, you sit kinda close to other patrons, sometimes back to back. The decoration is very cute and true to the theme of the food they are presenting, I love the ambiance. We tried two dishes, one is a Laotian version of the Tom Yum soup, which has a strong kick to it: spicier than the typical Thai Tom Yum Soup if you like spicy food. We ordered it mild but it is still very spicy to us. We also sampled a Malaysian dish which is a fried fish sitting in this curry sauce base. Very tasty! I like the carefully curated menu of this restaurant, they pick 1-2 dishes from each SEA country to represent their cuisine and you can get a taste of everything from everywhere if you are with a bigger group of friends! I would recommend family style! Food: 8.5/10 Ambience: 8.5/10
Immediately became one of my top favorite restaurants in dc. Going into this restaurant, you feel as if you are in your family's house. The restaurant is very small, so reservations usually are necessary. Everything was so delicious but my absolute favorites dishes included the pork jerky, spring rolls, and fried turmeric catfish. Highly recommend!
This is a great South East Asian fusion restaurant. Plenty of great options to choose from. We asked the server which two dishes he would recommend and went his recommendation. I had the whole fried branzino and my husband had the longevity noodles with shrimp. There were both very delicious. Hardly any bones in the fried branzino. Nicely crispy and very flavorful. The turmeric curry went so well with the fish and the rice. Absolutely recommend this place. Service and ambiance is great. It feels casual but it's an upscale restaurant if you look at the pricing and the quantity. No dress code though which is awesome.
Baan Mae checks every restaurant box. Good food? Check. Quality cocktails? Yep. Excellent service? Absolutely. A beautiful space? Obviously. A good story? Heck yes! The chef behind this Laotian spot in Shaw learned how to cook at a refugee camp in Thailand. As you scan the menu, you'll see the use of the word "Mom." The chef is mom and she's worth having in your family. For food, the dishes are unique, but pull from familiar flavors like curries and jasmine rice. An example of this is the red curry. Get it with beef brisket, which pairs well with the lychee and eggplant in the dish. It's excellent! To start, the salmon skewers are simple, but perfectly done and dipped in chimichurri sauce. For dessert, get the white gelato on black sesame sticky rice. So good! To drink, their cocktails are unique and come bitter, sour, or a tad sweet depending on how you like it. Service is excellent. The space is small and it can get crowded, but the staff still create a warm atmosphere. It's a beautiful space!
Lately we have been knocking it out with our selections and having a great experience at local places. These experiences kept going with our recent selection of Baan Mae. This was a new experience and I can say that I have never had Lao food. I enjoy learning something new and you will here. I am upset that I cannot remember the bartender's name but I thank him for his service and his creativity. He is the brains of all the drinks (I had the Clear as Cha and The Antidote) on the menu. He gave a great history of the establishment and told us of Lao food. He even let us know that the chef and entrepreneur of Baan Mae was in the back making sure the food was cooked and came out the way that best represented Laotian food. We got lucky in that we did not have reservations but were able to sit at the bar. Personally, this turned out better because we had front row seats to the mixologist making it happen with his concoctions. To fully enjoy the experience when you eat at this place you need to get over any hangups of eating with your hands in public. So, for those of you using a knife and fork to eat your chicken wings in public when you know how you get down at home. Let those silly inhibitions go and enjoy the experience the way it should be. Do not worry, they provide plenty of wet naps for you. The appetizers we went with were the Pun Khao Poon (PKP) with Pork Belly and Mae's Meatballs. The meatballs were listed as spicy but trust me you will have nothing to worry about. I like a bit of a kick and the flavor was there all the way but wish it had a tad more spice to it. Still, I would order these again in a heartbeat. The PKP is where you should really be using your hands to build a wrap with the lettuce, pork belly and other accoutrements that come with this dish. This could be a meal for some. For my entrée I went with the Filao-O-Fish sliders with the Jaew Bong Chili Jam. Crispy and sweet with a bit of heat. There is another small menu where this was located so make sure you look at all the menus to not miss any options. A solid five stars!!
My daughter suggested this place and it reminded me of Burma Star in San Francisco. We had 3 appetizers including the Bird Nest salad and chicken meat balls; and 3 mains, including crab curry, pork belly, and marinated beef. Plus a bottle of white wine. Tremendously authentic and interesting food!! The service is top notch and attentive. The room is cozy and warm. You don't want to miss this place!!
Great meal, but a little pricy for what it is imo. The laab goong dang was good but a little too strong in flavor, especially as a starter. The fish sauce vinaigrette was too salty for me personally, but I think it would've paired well with some sticky rice. I really loved the gaeng dang catfish! The coconut based curry was so umami and the catfish was super tender. The mee sua was also good, but it was kind of pricy for what it was? There were like 4 pieces of shrimp on top??

The ambience is infectious, with family photos and colorful art lining the walls. We were given a table in the back. Unfortunately the kitchen was out of some of the items we were looking forward to, but I personally enjoyed the crispy glazed Jaew Bong Wings (my favorite starter) and Gaeng Kii Lek, a mild coconut curry made with cassia leaf and collard greens, with chunks of pork belly hidden within. The group enjoyed some spicier dishes like the clay pot crab-infused Khao Maw Din but felt it was a bit overpriced at over $30. For dessert we requested the mango sticky rice, which was sliced mango atop a bed of slightly sticky rice that needed more condensed milk or more pizzazz to capture the essence of a succulent mango sticky rice I'd order at a night market in Thailand or Laos. I think the service was kind, but pretty slow and it took a while for the server to check on us in the back. Overall I'd come back to try some menu items I didn't get the chance to! read more

This is such a cozy little restaurant serving up delicious food. The sakoo is delicious-sweet and spicy with a fun texture. Our fave was the crab curry which had a generous amount of crab. Paired with the vermicelli noodles it was a great meal for a cold day. read more

Baan Mae was amazing, and it's right up there with Baan Siam and Thip Khao for Thai/Laotian food in the district. I didn't write down everything we had, but the sausage sandwich was delicious and the laab was solid. The sakoo were not great compared to Baan Siam's but still great to see them on a menu. The lychee curry was also excellent. The biggest standout was the Tom Yum martini--one of the best cocktails I've ever had with strong savory notes that were not too overpowering. read more

Food was flavorful and delicious, the place is a little small so the wait might be long, waiter was a little too snappy, but overall great restaurant read more
Overall this was a good spot. The prices are kind of expensive for the portion size. We attempted to order three sharable dishes and a starter. Parking wasn't too hard to find on a Sunday. It is a little small place which has it's charm but was definitely crowded. We had kind of lower level bar seating. Perfect small spot for a group of three. Definitely hard to find seating for a larger group, so just keep that in mind. Our starter was the Sakoo ($13), which everyone else seemed to be highly suggesting. It was on the small side, but was quite an interesting dish. I would highly suggest this one for it's uniqueness and interesting flavor profile. Definitely had a nice soft slick exterior with the crunch of peanuts and sweetness with the tanginess of the sauce. One of my favorites of the night. The food was delivered very promptly once we finished our appetizer. We had ordered the Pad See Eaw with shrimp ($25) and the Gaeng Phed with crab ($33). For these dishes you could choose between 2 different proteins. Our waiter actually suggested Gaeng Phed with the pork, but one of the people in our group doesn't really eat pig products, the crab was still delicious. Pad See Eaw, was good and the slickness of the noodles was overall very good. The Gaeng Phed, I would order again. The flavors were really good and nice chunks of crab meat. They give you an option of noodles or rice with your order, we went with noodles. The one downside with the curry is that there wasn't enough of a base layer, so you inevitably will have to order another side of noodles/rice. We ordered the Butterfly Pea Flower Jasmine rice ($3), which was alright. You'll definitely want to do at least 1 dish per person. Towards the end, we were waiting on our last satay dish but when we asked the waiter, he came back and said that we didn't have a third dish, the satay. Our waiter was nice, but I'm pretty sure he didn't realize they were supposed to be different dishes when he took the initial order and kept trying to offer us a dish that we had already ordered (the Pad See Eaw). Though to give him credit, it was very packed and a little hard to hear because there were so many people in small place. Just a note: They do have a 20% service fee in the bill. Overall good experience and definitely had some standout dishes. read more
I love this place, and want to try everything on the menu. I have been twice and service was perfect. The staff is always friendly and ready to answer any questions you have. I've tried the ribs which have been my favorite so far. They fall off the bones and are delicious. Highly recommend. I've had the branzino.... It's solidly good but needs the curry sauce to really make in special. The fish itself is perfectly cooked but really doesn't have much flavor if I'm honest. Gotta use the curry which feels like there isn't enough of. Pork belly wraps are good and the spinach curry is also good but a bit one note. We used the sauce from the ribs in the curry and added a lot. If I was going just off food this is honestly probably a 4 star but with service and enjoyability it's five. I will def be back to try more. Honestly can't wait to try their noodle offerings on the weekend read more

Chef Seng can do no wrong. I'm a loyal patron of (read: I'm completely obsessed with) ALL of her restaurants, and Baan Mae is no exception. Recently, Baan Mae debuted a weekend noodle shop during lunch hours called "555." As a soup aficionado, I knew I'd have to stop by. To start, I ordered the porky jerky which was super crispy, yet still very tender. As for my soup, I ordered the banh canh, a traditional Vietnamese soup with thick noodles in a pork, crab, and shrimp broth. It was SO filling and delicious. My husband ordered the boat noodle soup which was perfection. You can't go wrong with anything here! read more

Went on 12/26 for dinner so I want to say they may not have been on their regular game. The food/drinks were pretty good but nothing that should have been hot was hot. The Antidote was listed as available hot or cold and we were freezing so ordered hot but came warmish. Banana blossom salad was a bit too sweet for me, liked it once I asked and got a lime wedge. The tamarind soup was also warm - wished it came hot, especially once we added the noodles to our bowls which cooled it further - would not get again. Khao Maw Din crab rice in clay pot - also warm but not hot. It had good flavor but wished it had some crunchy bit from the clay pot but the pot wasn't hot enough. Picked the tapioca and coconut rice dessert which was tasty and comforting - the only dish we finished. When ordering, I asked if we could get a side of pea flower rice, but the server assured us that we would get some because "it comes with everything" but it never came. Probably would have been good with the banana leaf salad which was pretty salty. They were also out of sakoo which was one of our reasons for picking this restaurant. We have enjoyed some wonderful Lao restaurants and home cooked meals in the Bay so we're probably spoiled - may give this spot another chance if we have no plans at some point but maybe not on a holiday weekend when people don't really want to be working? Appreciate that effort to try making more interesting foods but I missed the more amped up flavors I've grown to expect. read more
Amazing meal, you need to eat here! Our waiter recommended 3 appetizers and 1 main or 2 appetizers and 2 mains. We did 3 apps and 1 main and I was satisfied but could have also eaten more. Will order more next time! Food -Sakoo - Tapioca pearl dumpling, preserved radish, peanut, chili, cilantro, baby green lettuce, $13. Okay... I will admit I never would have ordered this but our waiter said it's the #1 thing people get. But wow, I was amazed. What seemed like a small little ball that you eat wrapped in a piece of lettuce, had so much flavor! The inside was crunchy and flavorful. Would def get again. This comes with 5 little balls. -Fi'Lao O'Fish - Catfish sliders, fried blue catfish, milk bun, spicy chili lime mayo (jaew som Kewpie mayo), pickled daikon, crispy enoki mushroom, $15. I love a filet I fish, so I had to order these. It was very good and also came recommended from the waiter as #2. - Satay Noodles - Spicy yellow noodles, traditional Thai style peanut satay sauce, Chef Seng's special chili oil, fried garlic, crushed peanuts, scallions, pickles, $15. These came recommended through other yelp reviews, and I will def be ordering these again. Delicious and not too spicy. - Gaeng Phed - Red curry, lychee, crispy enoki mushrooms, seasonal herbs, butterfly pea flower Jasmine rice or rice vermicelli noodles, $33 with shrimp. We got ours with rice and it was super good. Curry was flavorful and came with 3 shrimp. Would order again. Reservation Make one! We have a rez for 6pm on a Monday which we made through open table. By 7ish the place was packed. They have a sign on the door that you get a 15 min grace period for reservations and can only be seated if the full group is there. Service I think 1 guy was working the check in and all the tables! He was super nice and gave us a good run down of the top things people order. He checked in on us a good amount and refilled out waters often. Ambiance Small restaurant with bar seating. Tables for 2-4 (I think). Small and kind of cramped together but cozy. No outdoor seating. read more
We saw this little gem on InKind and thought we'd give it a try. What a cute, mom-n-pop feel and a delicious fusion of Thai, Lao, and Vietnamese. Do not miss the tapioca dumplings, wings, and crispy spring rolls which are served with a sauce reflecting the fusion. One critique: While the red curry sauce was incredible and a perfect balance of lemongrass, coconut, spice, and herbs, portion was very small and served with leg meat and all its fatty glory. Mango sticky rice was also OK, but the rice is dry and overcome by far too much roasted black sesame. That said service (Daniel and the bar) and Ole' the server were so friendly. This could easily be five stars with slight modifications. read more
I went to Baan Mae for their pop-up collaboration with Ve Lai and Dough Market, and it was fantastic! It was booked out, but we got there early and were able to snag bar seats. The complimentary chai was rich and delicious - perfect for a cold day. I believe Zana Tea provided it! We loved Baan Mae's savory cocktails for the event. The standouts for me were my red curry-flavored colada (truly strong curry flavor!) and my friend's tom yum cocktail. They really nailed the dishes they were inspired by while still being enjoyable as drinks. The best bites for me were tied between the turkey chao (wonderful, warming congee with chili oil and century egg and youtiao) as well as Dough Market's Vietnamese coffee bun, which we all wanted seconds of. It nailed the coffee flavor and the mascarpone topping was just perfect! Dough Market is one of my favorite home bakeries and I just wish they were in DC more often! The bo me was good but the meat was a bit tough. We agreed the page was wonderful, though, and overall we loved all the dishes. So glad to have come in a group and been able to share such a lovely menu. I will be back for Baan Mae's normal menu again soon too! I love how creative they are and I appreciate the regular collaborations with other chefs. It's a small space, so make a reservation if you can. All of the staff was so welcoming today, both from Baan Mae and all of the partners! It was a wonderful atmosphere to eat in. Super glad to have come! read more

Food is really good, ambiance and service are disappointing. Just not worth the price for the experience and portion. Our food tickets got lost several times throughout the night and no one acknowledged the issue. Drinks were fine - for me this is a fine spot in the area and I'm sure it's someone's favorite but it isn't for me based on my previous experience. read more
A very lovely dining experience with the most attentive staff. My husband and I overindulged in their small plates, main dishes, cocktail, and dessert. I am so happy we got a variety of items because each dish was full of different flavors. To begin our meal, we ordered the mak muang cocktails (Mango puree, Don Q Cristal rum, chili), which was so refreshing and you could taste the sweetness of the mango puree that was perfectly balance with the chili. Almost wish we ordered more! For starters we got the chicken wings and sakoo. The chicken wings were perfectly crispy and the Lao preserved chili paste was delicious. The sakoo came with 5 tapioca pearl dumplings that were filled with preserved radish and peanut, topped with chili, and cilantro. My husband for the khao soi with chicken and it was perfectly spiced and the noodles were perfect! I opted for something I had never had before- the kimin paa, a Southern Thai style pan fried turmeric Branzino that was topped with lemongrass, garlic, and tamarind salt. The turmeric coconut sauce that surrounded the fish was delicious and I could've had a whole jar of it! The green mango salad and butterfly pea coconut rice paired perfectly with it and helped balance the spice. I could not leave without having their dessert, and it did not disappoint. We got their sesame sticky coconut rice with white rabbit candy and mango and it was the perfect portion for the both of us to share. We pretty much rolled out of the restaurant- we were so stuffed and everything was delicious. I think we found out new fave restaurant in the District. read more
The is one of several Laotian restaurants, including the legendary Padek in Arlington, that are owned by the same person. The food here is fancier (and pricier) than Padek. It's also not as good as Padek used to be but better than Padek is now. All that aside, we enjoyed our meals and the ability to enjoy them at their outdoor patio. We had a wide assortment of appetizers and mains and particularly enjoyed the Pun Khao Poon Spring Rolls and the Gaeng Dang with Chicken. Perhaps the "worst" thing we had was the Pad See Eaw with Shrimp and even that was good compared to most restaurants. read more

I had to have Thai-Lao food when I was in town, so I made a reservation for one at Baan Mae. It is near the green line in the Shaw Neighborhood and is quite accessible by public transportation. The interior of the restaurant is nicely decorated and dimly lit, and I was seated in one of the cozy window alcoves. There is an alcove on each side of the door, so you can awkwardly watch the parties across from you eat. It so happened that the musician pinkpantheress was dining across from me (!), and I was awkwardly making intermittent eye contact with her and her friend as I was chowing down. I believe she was in town to film her NPR Tiny Desk! Anyways, celebrity spotting aside, I enjoyed the food at Baan Mae but wished that I had invited friends to join me. I had the sakoo, which were these sweet/savory bouncy tapioca dumplings, as well as the hua pii, a banana blossom, jicama, and salted egg yolk salad. I have never eaten these dishes before and enjoyed them, but wish I ordered something else to offset the sweetness of the two. I would not say that their flavor profiles are identical, but the peanut filling in the sakoo is on the sweeter side, and the amount of tamarind sauce in the hua pii was a little too sweet for my liking, so I had to order some sticky rice to balance things out. I also think that they could've added a little more salted egg yolk. After I finished, I was a little too full to order something else, but next time, I hope I can sample some more of their offerings. This is definitely a restaurant that you should come to with at least 2-3 other people. read more
First Laotian restaurant ever! It was a great experience. There is a small outdoor seating area in the back of the restaurant. The inside is cozy with extravagant Southeast decor. There's a long bar table to the right of the restaurant as soon as you walk in if you were to go alone. The service was great! And the atmosphere was radiant - we were lucky to get a seat outdoors. I recommend putting a reservation if you were to go with friends as it gets packed on a weeknight! I got the Khoa Soi. The soup was very delicious and not too creamy. The chicken was grilled to perfection and I love the yellow egg noodles. The portions are a bit small for the price but that's the price you pay for the city. Highly recommend for a date night or even a night with some friends! Make sure to schedule a reservation to be safe! read more
Thip Khao was one of my favorite restaurants in DC so I when I heard the owners were opening another restaurant, I was very excited for it. Baan Mae meets the hype!! The menu was a unique mix of Thai + Lao and everything that we ordered was a delight. I really liked the sakoo, pork jerky, gaeng phed, and pun Khao poon. But truly all the apps and mains that we ordered were delicious. The only thing that we didn't like was the sticky rice dessert - the ice cream and mango were fine but the rice tasted a little... plasticky? The waitress was very attentive and helpful when we asked questions. And it's a cozy, wonderful spot. read more

This is one of the best restaurants I've been to in DC. The ambience is perfect for a date, not too loud, lighting soft and warm. The service was ideal; our waiter gave us a great run through of the menu and we wound up ordering well (two appetizers, two mains, two desserts): the tea leaf salad (SPECTACULAR), glutinous rice dumplings, ribs, and the special which was noodles with soft shell crab. The spice level (two peppers on the menu) was ideal. The thom yum martini was unique and tasty as well. Highly recommend! read more
My friend and I came because of the 555 Noodles, and it didn't disappoint. We visited on a Saturday, at noon, right when they opened. The owner, I think she was the owner, was very friendly, and made very good suggestions. Always came over to check on us, conversed with us during her free moments. We sat by the window in a small spot but it was just right for the two of us. We had two noodle dishes, mom's noodle soup "khao poon beef" and the banh canh tom cua, from the 555 menu along with the pun khao poon. So good but I think our favorite was the banh canh tom cua because the broth was thick and so were the noodles. Had a kick to it too so if you like spicy, this might be up your alley. Street parking of course in DC. I'd come back to try more stuff, I wish this place was closer to where I work so I could be a frequent customer! Thanks for the delish lunch! read more

One of my favorite spots in DC! You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, every single dish is perfectly made and delicious. They now have noodle shop during lunch hours, only serving a few apps and soups. I do still prefer their full dinner menu, but soupy noodles will be perfect for cold winter days. The staff are all very friendly and attentive. The ambiance is cozy and intimate. A must visit! read more

Walked in on a Sunday afternoon and was seated immediately. Ambiance was vibey. Started with the sakoo which was very interesting and unlike anything else I've tried before. It was salty and sweet with an outer texture similar to mochi and a flavorful filling inside. The pork jerky was tender, grilled bbq'd meat that was fairly standard. The crab curry was quite salty but had a good flavor. read more
reincarnation of hanumanh, one of our favorite restaurants in DC and our favorite concept from chef Seng. Baan Mae is fantastic - the food has all been delicious and we've had many iterations of the menu since opening. The space hasn't changed, but the cocktail program and team have. Patio out back when weather cooperates. Food comes out quickly, service is wonderful, really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Favorite dishes are the massamun and crab curries, the longevity noodles, naem khao and banana blossom salad, pork ribs, sakoo and shrimp crudo. And don't skip dessert read more
