"Oh, there goes the guy with the cool hat walking up 1st ave" onlookers would say as they walked by, jealous of my cool new hat. Cute girls would come up to me at the Wayland and or Ding-a-Ling saying "Oh my god, I love your hat!" ... "You haven't been to East Village Hats!??!?!?!" Not only are their hat bodies less expensive than I've found anywhere else, their balsa wood head blocks are the same as everywhere else. Look, head blocks and hat blocks are expensive, and because there is no longer anyone in the US who makes them on a mass scale, they're super expensive. Now, if you want to fly to the UK and buy a balsa wood block there, then yes, you can get it cheaper. But if you're buying in the US, be prepared to pull out your credit card and cringe. Millinery is a dying art form and a very, very expensive craft. That's just the way it is. If you're in NY, this is the place to go to get a wide variety of felts/finishes/ribbons/anything else millinery-related.

Despite paying such a high price, the quality was absolutely terrible. The kapota ripped apart in places that I barely even touch. After just a few months, I went back to them, expecting some level of responsibility. Instead, they shrugged it off and said, "Yeah, we don't know. That's your problem." Rather than fixing it properly, they just patched over the holes. And, of course, after a few months, the patches ripped again--plus new holes appeared! When I went back again, they told me, "Yeah, this is your problem." At first, they charged me $50 to patch up two small holes. Now, for the same holes plus a new one, they suddenly want $400! (I found much better tailor Bugi who did WONDERFUL job only for $40!!!!!!) This is outrageous. These people are scammers and charlatans. They charge a premium price for a garbage product and then try to squeeze even more money out of you for useless "repairs." Stay far, far away!
