solid place, owner is really nice. he's a good salesman and knows his stuff. other guys at the shop are very nice but not great help, they have quality hats and you can trust his opinion. I walked out with a really nice Guerra and on another occasion a Borsalino. easy to get there by train, about 1 min from the subway station. probably the last old time hat shop left in NYC. worth it. Sundays are nice days to shop, the owner is always there, I got Borsalinos there for $350 that cost $500-600 elsewhere. theyre the only guys who still steam up your hat for free,too. Do not order online. Buyer Beware. I ordered online, paid. A few weeks later when I called to inquire about my online order they could not find it at first. Then, when I called a second time they claimed the hat was delayed. A week later they still had not shipped the hat and did not know when it would ship. They seemed baffled that I wanted my money back. I had to dispute the charge to secure a refund. I consider their inept handling of my online order, and the trouble I went through to get my money back a clear indication that they are not ethical, nor an entity that a prudent person would do business with. read more

I do NOT recommend Bencraft Hatters! I had a terrible experience with a hat purchase in December 2022. I ordered a brand new Stetson Saxon in Graphite, but they sent me an old stock in Charcoal instead. The hat also did not come with a Stetson hat box but in a Bencraft hat box. When asked, Bencraft insisted that the colors are similar (they are not), and that their box is better than Stetson's because Bencraft's has a handle (I prefer Stetson's box which has on its side a paper label with hat info). I called the store several times to ask for a replacement, but nothing has been done. They also did not return calls/texts despite their promises to do so. Many calls were also not answered and went straight to voicemail. Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed in Bencraft Hatters for their lack of intent to make things right and I will be buying my hats elsewhere from now on. read more

Stores like this are hard to come by, and I hope it's here hundreds of years from now! This store has the best selection in the country, along with the Village Hat Shoppe, but its clear across the country on the west coast! Being a long time collector and serious hat enthusiast, I have sough hat shops all over the country and even in Europe. Bencraft is by far my most favorite hat shoppe in the world! Although such businesses tend to have internet sites for online purchases, there's just no substitute for a in-person store visitation to find both the right size and the right look. Unless hats come in the number-size system -- which some simply don't anymore, I happen to have a head that commonly borders on L/XL and unless I try a L and a XL in person, I can easily get the wrong size that not only doesn't fit right but may not be proportional with respect to my features. The in-store customer service at Bencraft is bar none! And they have consistently been patient with my personal need to try on both a L and an XL. Moreover, If you treat these guys with the respect they deserve, you'll get the royal treatment! They have always been helpful whenever I have had a problem...especially with exchanges, which I've had to do on several occasions. read more

I ordered a hat from them, but when it arrived it was too big (this despite my basing my choice on their size guide). I sent it back and requested an exhange for the same hat in the next smaller size. Someone called back and said they didn't have that hat in the next smaller size and wanted me to accept a different hat, which I refused and asked for a refund. Two phones and a month later I am still waiting for the refund. I have turned the issue over to my credit card dispute/claims process. Oh, and the kicker is that when I called the second time I was given the name of the first fellow that said he was going to process the refund, but when I called that number (about two weeks later) still wondering where was my refund, I got a message notifying me that the number was no longer in service. read more

I've walked past this store a number of times and always felt intimidated going in - well my friend wanted to go in and check out hats today and now I know I shouldn't have been so intimidated. The owner and employees of this store were very helpful and polite to us even though it looked like we weren't going to buy anything (i.e. we looked too young for the average clientele there) but I found a hat and discovered it was also 50% of! The owner even cleaned my friend's hat for free. Note: they're closed on Saturdays but are open on Sundays. It's a really tiny shop but how big do you need a hat shop to be? If you're looking for a nice hat definitely check this place out instead of going anywhere near Bedford since this place has been here for over a half century. read more

They have also managed to establish their online presence while maintaining their traditional roots. I have developed a mild addiction to the hats of an era that has passed. THE WORST! I called and described the hat I was looking for AND the size, a black derby by Cappa size XL. He said they have it. I asked him to put the hat away for me and I'll be in to purchase it. This store is phenomenally better than their old Borough Park location. Big glass windows letting in plenty of sunlight and a nice appeasing hardwood flooring. Clean too. I usually hate going into small shops because I tend to be followed constantly by a salesperson even after saying I don't need help, like I'm going to steal something. This place has genuinely good customer service like a mom n pop shop out in the suburbs. I went in looking for flat cap and was given at least ten different hats to try on. I was never pressured to buy anything and was given advice on what looked good and what didn't. I was a fan of this place when it was in Williamsburg Brooklyn and still a fan today on avenue M. I stopped by the new place to get some old wool fedoras straightened out and pressed that I bought from them in the past. The place seemed more exclusive than ever, at the same time, still keeping that feel good Brooklynite customer service. Such a cool shop and cool people behind the counter. i was a buying a hat that i never wore before, and asked if i could take it home to show my family and if it was no good to bring it back. i was answered with a "sure no problem". coming back to return the hat i was told that there is no money back, only exchange or credit. when i told the owner he was the one who told me i can bring it back and didnt mention anything about only credit, his response was "common sense is to read the reciept". i told him he mislead me and that before rosh hashona how could he do such a thing. his response "i can live with that". there are other stores to buy hats with great service and better pricing. read more

They sells tons of Borsalinos so their prices are great compared to other stores in NYC. If they're crowded come back another time. It's better when you can have more one on one attention with the salesman so they can bring you out other styles to try. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! I purchased hats online at the end of December for a gift. Unfortunately, they didn't fit, but the order didn't have a return/exchange form, so I just sent them back within the 30 day window. I talked to Robert and Morris and told them I wanted a refund and said I would receive it within 2 days. Never happened. Every time I called (6 different occasions) their were excuses as what is taking so long were becoming redundant.This wasn't satisfactory to me, so I asked to speak to their boss/manager/owner, but was given lame excuses as to why I couldn't (and of course said my refund was on its way) Finally, I had enough and asked my credit card company to refund my money (which they did), filed a complaint with the BBB, and now this review. Perhaps they will listen now.? read more

Traditional Hat store that looks like it has not changed since the 1960's. Excellent selection, staff is great and store is a lot of fun. I have been a customer for years and it is the only place I buy hats. Excellent prices on moderate and high end hats. Carries Stetson, Biltmore and Borsalino plus many others.
