Great spot if you want a new hat! These guys are awesome and custom create hats. They steam them and put in a nice new hat box. If you're in NYC take a trip over to Harlem and check them out. You won't be disappointed. Just pray for a good parking space! We lucked out!

I first hit this spot in 2017 & have been ordering online ever since, but I ensured the owner that the next time I'm in New York, I'm coming to see him & of course he didn't disappoint. This spot stays up to date on the latest styles & is very welcoming to those who take pride in their hat game. Hit him up when you're ever in Harlem.

What a fantastic shop for both veteran hat lovers and newcomers alike! Hats never sat well on my head until I came to this shop. But now, I constantly get compliments on my donegal tweed cap, and it's warm and fashionable to boot. Marc is cool, knowledgeable, patient, and kind. I felt looked after and trendy by association! The rest of his staff are also easy to talk to, and all are ready to give a good and honest opinion of the look of your hat. This place is my go to for hats for both myself and for gifts for friends and family. I now have to get hooks for my wall for the start of my collection! There are so many styles here, so you won't be wanting for variety. Even better is the presentation of all of them. The exposed brick and the rows upon rows of different hats feel like a VIP experience through and through. I hope more people enjoy what this shop has to offer!

I don't really wear hats. It's truly a rare occasion to see my head covered. However, when one of my best friends asked where he could be properly hatted in an adult fashion while in New York, Flamekeepers came to mind. So here we came, saw, and purchased. The decor is befitting of a high standard which can also be said of their pieces. The ambience is immaculately clean and perfect for that hard to please person in your life. The no-pressure service provided is a breeze and sure to guarantee their success. They have a small selection of hats specifically for women. However, I would say that this is primarily a male shopping experience. Hats range in price from $40 and up. My friend found a hat that he liked for about $400, but was also given similar options in other price ranges. Flamekeepers is a God-send and worth checking out. Plus the hat boxes make for a great looking gift!

Being named TimeOut New York's "Most Stylish New Yorker 2013" is a nice feather in your cap (Sorry, I couldn't resist) The Most Stylish New Yorker, has a very unique past. Originally from Queens, Marc was a partial owner of J.J. Hat Center on Fifth Ave. For years, Marc has been telling his partners they should consider another store in Harlem. They didn't agree with his ideas so he recently opened Flame Keepers Hat Club, a men's hat store on W. 121st St. near St. Nicholas Ave. That takes a lot of guts to walk away from your comfort zone but when you want to follow your passion, you'll do what it takes to make your dreams a reality. I walked in today with my son and I'm a man on a mission. I want a cap. Not a cap like they wear in "Newsies" but a cool cap similar to what Rocky wore when he went to Russia. Do you see it in your mind? Yeah boyee.. I walk in and see a wall of caps. I'm greeted by a sales person and tell him my Rocky 4 story. He asks Marc about it and he says, yes its on the third shelf. I try it on and I feel like yelling DRAGO in the store! I tell them I'm wearing the hat out of the store! I'm looking around and I see some really cool classic styles: Wool felt / Fur felt hats, Wool caps I see with lots of Ireland labels, French berets and some cool straw hats. (I bought a Straw Hat when Marc was at JJ Hat Center) I walk over to Marc and congratulate him on his new venture and ask him about a loyalty program. He takes my information and will contact me once that system is set up. If you're looking for a great hat (You know you want one, watch The Blacklist and get back to me) you need to come uptown to Flame Keepers Hat Club. I just changed my Yelp photo wearing my new purchase. Support locally owned New York businesses!

Ask the Community - Flamekeepers Hat Club

    Are they open today?

YES!!! We are open from 12-7 today!!! Thank you for inquiring.

Is Flamekeepers Hat Club still open? Just walked by at 11:30 a. m. Although I was on the opposite side of the street, it looked like he'd moved out. I'd hate to see another awesome, respectable, and Black-owned shop leave Harlem.

They are open I just got off the phone with them !

I am new to formal headwear, and my father suggested that I go here for a proper fitting and customization. I was excited about it! It felt like a next step in my adulthood as I grow into a middle-aged vibe. I took my 12-year-old son to show him the difference in quality between a mass retailer and a bespoke, local, small business retail experience. I splurged +1k on 3 new hats. I love them, but the service was nothing like it used to be, as I understand it. This is where I would give it a much lower rating if it weren't such a great little spot. 2 Stars: The two young women working were not very knowledgeable, seemed quite apathetic, and essentially left me to my own devices to sort fit, shape, etc. out. They answered questions about care adequately and showed me several hats that I asked to see, but in a detached way. In short, it was a very disappointing experience and not bespoke at all. My father was mystified when I told him about it. I don't generally leave reviews, good or bad, unless things go too far. But after reading through the low reviews, often from long-term loyal customers who lament experiences similar to mine and the recent change in ownership, I am bothered by the defensiveness in the owner's replies. Many of them say [the milliner has resigned due to health, and therefore we no longer offer shaping or repair services] or [come in for a chat to correct your misinformation]. WHAT?! That is how you respond? On a public forum? Marketing yourself as a luxury shop but responding like a cranky clerk? Why not hire a new milliner? Or train a new one? Find a way to outsource it in the meantime. But telling decades-long high-paying customers to do it themselves at home over a kettle...what are you talking about? Should I learn to tailor and do dry cleaning in my bathtub, too? Turns out, the problem is top-down. The new owner has clearly wrecked this place and doesn't seem to care; it's all about her. Another NYC institution bites the dust. All of that said, it's a unique place. One of the last vestiges. Go there.

The sales rep never processed the return, so I had to request a refund myself. Still no hat, just wasted time and money (including paying for parking in SoHo). All I heard was, "Oh, I'm sorry." Sorry doesn't fix terrible service. Completely unprofessional -- everything about this place is trash. A few weeks later, I walked by again and there was no hat class in progress. I popped in just to see what EVH is all about, as I love super niche businesses like this. I walked in and the owner was helping out a few other people, so I just perused around for a second. I had my airpods in with no music playing, hiding in plain sight. I heard the owners AWESOME British accent and thought to myself "wow it's really a vibe in here." At this exact moment, I spotted a hat that really caught my eye. It was a hat that had a mix matched denim pattern that could be paired with almost any outfit. I had a vision of me buying this hat and it becoming an integral part of my personality. "Oh, there goes the guy with the cool hat walking up 1st ave" onlookers would say as they walked by, jealous of my cool new hat. Cute girls would come up to me at the Wayland and or Ding-a-Ling saying "Oh my god, I love your hat!" ... "You haven't been to East Village Hats!??!?!?!" I would respond to them with a cheeky, endearing smile. However, when I picked up the hat it was like $130 and that's just out of my price range for a hat at this moment. Also, I have an extremely large head so the hat was probably a pipe dream all along. A man could dream can't he...?
