The custom hat-maker & repair dept is gone. the familiar faces are gone everything that used to make it an authentic, old time hat shop is gone There used to be a fun vibe to this place..cool people, the jazz playing- I saw Terrence Howard shopping there once years ago Getting a steam-up on the way to Penn Station used to be a ritual for me. I'd walk out happy clutching a new hat box in my hands.. I'd chat with other hat wearers i only visited the new JJs twice. I asked about repairs both times, with almost 2 years between visits, I got the same response both times the repairman got sick & we're between repairmen An authentic hat shop experience should be easy to achieve with just one old-school, experienced hatter from that generation . Someone who could teach the crew & top brass how to run a real old fashioned hat shop. When I come to Manhattan I want to see that old neon Stetson sign and hear the whoosh of the steamer. I looked forward to it, like a piece of old New York. I miss that.

Prices are much better than M&J Trimmings, although the selection of silk flowers is much smaller and not as fancy. Most were $5 or $8 and come with a clip, ponytail holder, and pin already attached, although some just have the clip, for your hair or a lapel. Or a hat. The hats are mostly polyamide and come in every shape, style, and color. This is a fun store, and the cashier was friendly and helpful.

I said fine, here's my number -- return it and get the correct one. Another week goes by, and when I come back, the same hat is still sitting in the box -- not even returned. Lazy employees, no urgency, and the store feels more like a hangout spot than a place of business. Customers shouldn't have to deal with this kind of nonsense. The sales rep never processed the return, so I had to request a refund myself. Still no hat, just wasted time and money (including paying for parking in SoHo). All I heard was, "Oh, I'm sorry." Sorry doesn't fix terrible service. Completely unprofessional -- everything about this place is trash. The store needs serious management or maybe just let AI run it because at least robots would do the job.

Cute girls would come up to me at the Wayland and or Ding-a-Ling saying "Oh my god, I love your hat!" ... "You haven't been to East Village Hats!??!?!?!" I would respond to them with a cheeky, endearing smile. However, when I picked up the hat it was like $130 and that's just out of my price range for a hat at this moment. I almost didn't visit this hat shop because of some very negative reviews that all had one consistency in them which was that the store operatives were very rude but that wasn't my experience at all. the guy was helpful patient and even took a few dollars off my purchase. I will be returning for any future had needs. read more

Not only are their hat bodies less expensive than I've found anywhere else, their balsa wood head blocks are the same as everywhere else. Look, head blocks and hat blocks are expensive, and because there is no longer anyone in the US who makes them on a mass scale, they're super expensive. Now, if you want to fly to the UK and buy a balsa wood block there, then yes, you can get it cheaper. But if you're buying in the US, be prepared to pull out your credit card and cringe. Millinery is a dying art form and a very, very expensive craft. That's just the way it is. If you're in NY, this is the place to go to get a wide variety of felts/finishes/ribbons/anything else millinery-related.
