One of their techs (coincidentally working next door) noticed I was having issues with my AC and offered to take a look. Turns out, a rattlesnake had crawled in, eaten a rat, died inside the unit, and the rat had chewed through some wiring. He diagnosed and fixed it on the spot -- that kind of service you just don't forget. Since then, Gabe has become my go-to technician. He's honest, sharp, and thorough. Every time he comes out, he brings not just professionalism, but solutions. I even had him service my commercial office in Tucson for years. Simply put: as long as Gabe works at B&J, I'll be a customer. Most recently, I had an issue resurface that Gabe had previously warned me to keep an eye on. When it came up again, I followed his guidance and isolated the cause -- a bad fan motor. When I called to schedule, I did hit some friction with the office (not everyone appreciates a homeowner diagnosing a problem, even one with engineering and patent experience). That part was frustrating. But thankfully, Gabe followed through, confirmed everything I suspected, and had the parts on hand to get me back up and running quickly. We needed a new mini split installed in our garage, so we called B & J Refrigeration on a recommendation of a family friend. The unit that needed to be replaced was only 1.5 years old but was unfortuntately installed incorrectly by our contractor, whom we parted ways with for his incompetence. We had to start all over, but this way it's better because we have a warranty on the unit and we know exactly who installed it and the process with them was fairly seamless from start to finish. On March 31, 2023, I had the B & J technician out to look at an issue I had one of my Air Conditioning systems. One system had a leak and the other system just needed to be checked out. He put nitrogen in the bad unit to see how long it would last. My units did not have Heat Strips and the same technician ordered them. When he came back, on May 1, 2023 he found out that the Heat Strips were the wrong ones and the ones that were needed were no longer available. He also saw that there was a leak in the system. He had evacuated the remaining nitrogen, and then filled the defective unit with over 9Lbs of 401A Refrigerant and Yellow dye to try and locate the leak. I was charged the astronomical price of $90.00 a pound for just the Refrigerant which alone came out to almost $900.00 subtotal. To me this was like Highway Robbery! The unit worked for only a month. I then ordered 25Lbs of 401A Refrigerant which cost me $395.00 from a Refrigerant Distributor, which is $15.80 a pound. I called B & J back up to get someone again to look at the system. On July 11, 2023, a different technician looked at the system. He did not see any dye on the coils or on the pipes. He was unable to test the system any further as he did not have any nitrogen on his truck. He told me that I would have to get someone else out to further test the system with nitrogen. On July 18, 2023 I had another different technician over. He said that he saw yellow dye on the coils. I asked the tech, why no one else saw the dye. He said that he had a better light than the others. He called up and talked to his manager and sent his manager pictures from his phone. I called up the manager and had him order a coil and I called up again to schedule a 5th appointment to have the coils replaced. I also told the manager that I had my own Refrigerant and if he could delete the charge for the Refrigerant. His reply was that he could not use it as it may have been recycled. It was Brand New. If it was Recycled it would have to say on the bottle. On August 14, 2024 a 4th different technician showed up to replace the coils. Before he did, he wanted to check out the system. He also did not see any dye on the coils and called up his manager. He was hesitant to replace the coils as he was not positive that the coils were bad. Due to the inconsistencies in the dye results, I was also hesitant to have them replace the coils. I gave in and had it done, which cost me another $900 dollars for over 9Lbs of 401A Refrigerant not including the installation of the coil assembly. The technician got the unit back up and running and the very next day, the system was completely dead. The system was worse than before the coils were replaced. So far I was out $5819.63 and still did not have one Air Conditioning unit working. I called B & J and talked to the manager to have their head person to look at the unit. I also told the manager that I was still was not convinced that the coils were the problem. The head technician checked out the system and found the problem which was the feed and return Refrigerant lines to the compressor and back from the coils to the compressor, were leaking, which is what I originally thought was the problem. At the 6th appointment, the repair technicians could not replace the lines as it was considered an INSTALLATION! I called up and scheduled an appointment for the head of the installation department to give me a quote. I also asked him if they would use my 401A Refrigerant and if he could deduct the cost from the bill and he said that he could. He also told me that they were now charging, $100 a pound, a far cry from $15.80 a Lb. I paid half of the invoice cost in December and had gotten sick. On June 5th, 2024, I finally had the Air Conditioner lines replaced by B & J as the other work that was done was under warranty, in case something else failed on the unit that was worked on. Truthfully I would have given B & J one star, for aggravation of not having Air Conditioning / Heat in 2/3 of the house and having to have 6 repair technicians out to find the problem, which was also costly. But I gave them 2 stars for Lawrence and his Installation crew for finally getting the Air Conditioner working. Total price for this Repair was $8604.94. read more

We had them out yesterday to do our yearly check on our AC unit. They suggested a sensor be replaced so we agreed. The service tech never completed the installation & didn't reconnect power back to our thermostat. Calling the next day they couldn't send anyone out to correct THEIR Tech's mistake until 3pm. Who in 90 degree weather wants to sit without a/c until 3pm. Needless to say we'll never use them again! My husband managed to connect the wires needed. Whenever they come out for a check they always "recommend" replacing things. I'd definitely get a second opinion on their recommendations. If their a/c tech can't even complete a job properly I'm not confident that the recommendations made for repairs are needed. Update: I changed it from 1 star to 3 stars because the owner did call my husband & they sent someone out much sooner than 3pm to address the issue. read more

The condensation pipe in the attic was leaking water into my bathroom I contacted B&J. Technician came to my house and checked the unit and came to the conclusion that "unit dips in the back to coil drain pan where it meets the furnace". Couple of days later I got an estimate to fix the problem than B&J technician came out got up in the 30 minutes later I was told he had to talk to his boss, because he could not do the repair. For the last week and a half every time I call I'm told they are still trying to figure out what the can do. The vent is still leaking. Is this company have any professional HVAC people? I gave one star, because you can't give less. If you are going to spend your money try a reputable company. -- read more

I was given a repair estimate of $872.42 to change a water fill valve on an ice machine. $497.42 for the part and $375 for three hours of labor. With the caveat that there's no guarantee it will fix the problem. A new machine costs $4200 so I had nothing to lose by trying to change it myself. The replacement part cost me $59 - retail. It took me 30 minutes of my labor to change the part. Ice machine is running great. Those are the facts. The estimate is in writing. If that's what you're looking for in a refrigeration service company then B&J is for you. Update: The owner of B&J called me today and said she reviewed my service and decided to refund me the diagnostic charge since I had told them my thermostat was inoperable. I am glad I was refunded a portion of the excessive charge, but they need to consider training their technicians to inform their customers of the charges before installing very expensive thermostats or any other parts. read more

When I built my house in 1990, B&J Refrig installed the two home air-conditioners. Now, after 28 years of service, the last of those two air-conditioners has been replaced today. I have recommended B&J to my neighbors for decades as a very responsive, reliable, and most reasonable company. All of my experience with B&J has been excellent, and today was no exception. Tony and Martin installed a new AC on the roof of our condo in less than 4 hours. They were very efficient and friendly, easy to work with. They cleaned up after themselves. I would have given 5 stars on just the installation, but we were promised a 6:00 a.m. start, as we were leaving town, and it turned out to be after 8:00 when they arrived. Perhaps some miscommunication between Lawrence, who provided the quote, and the installers. Fortunately, Tony and Martin made up the lost time, and we were able to leave in time to reach our destination. Had them out twice to fix my AquaCal Heat Pump for my pool. Very nice scheduling service but they were unable to fix my issue. They know nothing about adjusting pool water flow through the heat pump, which puts them behind the curve from the start. So they managed to take my money for the two service calls but no real results. The heat pump starts, runs fine for a while and then shuts off. They were stumped and, of course, the pool company is clueless too. Makes me wish I would have put in a gas heater. read more

I just had my A/C service for the 2016 season. All was working properly. The service was performed by a different company, NOT B&J. Last year my service tech with B&J recommended $600 in repairs. I never had them do two of the repairs as I thought these were phony and full of bologna repairs. The company I used this year found everything to be in good working order. No repairs recommended. The new company never even asked me for a service contract - a point of contention I had with B&J as I hate the pressure to buy next years maintenance ahead of time "to save money and get discounts on repairs." Last year B&J recommended the replacement of a capacitor motor run because they could put in a 5 year part rather than the 1 year part existing on my unit. ($200.00) Also recommended last year was to replace the condenser fan motor ($300.00). Amazing that they were in good working order this year, but not last year. I sure wonder about the contactor they insisted I replace last year.($88) read more
