This placed pulled up and we said "SOLD!" It was definitely the busiest spot in town. Which is always a good sign. When you walk in, you can tell that this is the place to be. Everyone knew everyone. You seat yourself and then receive menus. We were quickly greeted (dang it that's the one thing I didn't get, our server's name!) by the sweetest woman. She got us drinks and then we asked her what's the best on the menu. She said the catfish and pork chops were always a hit. The cafe originally was well known for its burgers. We just had burgers the night before so we wanted something different. We tried the mozzarella sticks as an appetizer (not the frozen kind from Walmart), my boys shared the hand breaded tenders with garlic bread, and green beans. The green beans....HOW did they get that much flavor in them?! I'm embarrassed thinking that I made good green beans after trying theirs. I need to sit down and take notes. The tenders were in fact hand breaded and looked great-my boys wolfed them down before I could taste one. We shared the regular catfish plate with 6 filets, beans, cole slaw, hush puppies and a baked potato with butter and sour cream. The catfish was done right! Good amount of breading, tender/flaky, not greasy. Beans and slaw were yummy as well. Let's talk about the star of this plate-the hush puppies. We got a combo of regular spicy and the spicy hush puppies have spoiled me. They were homemade and I could've eaten an entire platter of those alone. Everything was about $40, we left full and happy. As a foodie, it brings me great joy to find these places that are not food chains and their take on a food we have all eaten before. The sandwich was killer good with a great mix of flavors from the melted cheese to the mushroom, bacon, chicken and buttered Texas toast. Wow it's good! The salad bar is stocked with fresh options including dill pickles, boiled eggs, shredded cheese, and cherry tomatoes in addition to a bunch of other items. There's 5-6 dressings to choose from as well. Decaturville is a small town, and folks are lucky to have a place like this close by. I look forward to eating there again in the future.

The most interesting visit was on a VERY hot day in August we were just looking for a break and maybe a cold brew but as we were entering the cove we saw something odd. There were folks walking out with armloads of stuff in quite a hurry. Apparently, the big overhead power lines had melted, wait what?! Did I mention that is was VERY hot? They were giving away ice, ice cream and everything that would obviously go bad in a hurry, oh yeah it was VERY hot LOL On to the review ... There's access for small and large boats, as big as freighters, and there's lots of dock space to tie up your boat as well as transient spots should you want to stay a while. If you are launching from here or just coming to the restaurant/bar they have a large parking lot and area for launched vehicles & trailers. they have fuel services (both diesel and gas), limited boat repair, permanent slips for all size boats from fishing boats to 40' party boats, a transient dock, a retail store with snacks, supplies, swimming and fishing gear, and more. There are separate reviews for Mermaid Marina and the restaurant but it's all together in the same building and while you can come here by land, and a lot of people do, you always know that you are on the river. They celebrate everything here from Cinco de mayo to Madris Gras and Superbowl. They never miss a chance to have fun whether it a Bachelorette party or 4th of July fireworks launched from a barge it's always something. They also have cabins for rent by the day, I'm not familiar with them but they're on the property and I have talked to a couple who were spending the weekend on the Redneck Riviera and seemed to be having a good time. Bottom line: The air conditioning is good and cold and so is the beer. The food is pretty good, especially the burgers and the people are very friendly and helpful. It's not a bad place to take a break, whether a storm or just recharge your batteries. If you are just cruising the area or if you're coming up from Mobile Bay this big building and all the docks are tightly tucked away in a cove and behind some small hills so look for the big sign or be safe and punch on the coordinates. The food is good and some is excellent. I'd prefer more smoke, as others have said, but the pork is juicy and tender. The fried okra is hot, fresh, crisp and delicious. The cornbread cakes are spot on. I suspect the turnip greens are canned and of a brand that I really like so zero complaints there. If you live around here you know and if you're passing nearby it's certainly worth a stop. I'll be back whenever i'm in the area.
