We are wondering why no one came to us and get our orders until we asked one of the staff. The staff came said that they don't have food for inside, the tacos is served outside (car show) We are very hungry at that time. They should have told us right away when we entered the restaurant that they don't serve food and we have to turn our backs and understand. I was already expecting the worse even before arriving but boyfriend had his hopes up for it, so I went along. We called in at 6pm to make sure their kitchen was opened just because some of the times on google and their website didn't match up, questions were answered and we arrived half an hour later. Space is huge, they're a restaurant during the day and on the weekends they turn into a Latin Club. Tamales - ($8) - Microwaved mushy mess. The dish arrived to the table with the banana leaf opened, corn dough wasn't holding shape at all. The inside chicken part being cold as the outside being extremely hot. We should have thrown the towel in after this, but... there's more. Fish Tacos - ($10) - I got this, they're tacos. Couldn't be that bad right? Tortillas were cold, my BIGGEST pet peeve, fish that was supposedly fried, were soggy. Tortilla chips they used to garnish were stale. Pescado Frito - ($18) - After 4 bites he said "yeah, i'm not doing this to my stomach" -- didn't bother trying it for myself. Sangria - ($5.??) - It's orange juice, with red wine poured over it. Went to check out Azucar's new menu and revamp. All I can say is wow!!!. The food is out of this world . On this visit I had the Lomo Saltado Taco which is on their premium Taco list. The Lomo tacos are amazing, best taco ive had in a very long time. The flavors of this taco is a absolute must have. I 100% recommend you come out to the north side to try out this taco. I also had the Chicken Torta. This torta was jam packed full of flavour, roasted chicken queso, lettuce, and avocado and pico de gallo... I want another one but Im just way to full. I was super disappointed. We came for taco Tuesday unlimited shrimp and fish taco. At first we were impressed how stuffed the taco looked. Later to find out we were majorly eating onions and BREADINGS. It was ridiculous when we open the breaded "Shrimp". It was 90% breading. The shrimp was a size of a booger. There are few reasons I would never return to a restaurant but service is definitely one of them. If you like being yelled at and called a liar, then certainly this is the place to be. The six of us were out celebrating a birthday and looking for a great meal and time. After we were seated, the waitress came to get our order. Right away, I felt she didn't want to be there, I don't think she enjoys smiling, and didn't seem to care to provide decent customer service. Ok, that's fine, everyone has a bad day once in a while (or maybe everyday for her). We were still pleasant and said our thank yous when we received any service. The food came out and one of the orders was wrong but we didn't bother letting her know. During the meal, she did bring more water but failed to bring other items that we needed so we asked another waitress who happily met our needs. Some of us were done our meals and the waitress came out to gather plates. She asked the ones that had clean plates if they were done and we replied yes. I was talking to one of the others and she wasn't yet done her meal as evident by having half of her chicken still on her plate but the waitress collected her plate and took it away without asking her if she was done. When the waitress returned, my friend asked where was her chicken. The waitress began to say she asked if everyone was done and we replied yes so she took it away and didn't pack it up. This was untrue and no matter what my friend said, this waitress kept insisting she asked her if she was done. My friend asked to speak to the manager and we were left waiting about 10 min. The manager came out with a plate and placed it in front of my friend. She began to say, the waitress is my daughter and of course I would believe her, you made her cry and the whole kitchen staff are disrupted. She did not even ask about what happened and when she did hear the explanation from someone as our table, not once did she say sorry, or admit the waitress made a mistake. I'm certain if her daughter set the restaurant on fire, she would blame the customers before her daughter. This was the rudest and most unprofessional owner I have ever encountered. Even after she heard from 6 people of the truth, she still did not apologize or recognize the error. Only one of the other waitresses said sorry as we paid our bill and left. It's too bad as she and the male waiter seem to understand the concept of customer service. In reading other online reviews, I see there are other situations that customers have experienced with this waitress and owner. I would never come here again as they do not value customers and treat them terribly. read more

Worse dining experience ever. I ordered enchiladas and instead of being filled with shredded chicken breast it contained tough old leg tendons, the pop was watered down the whole time we had to swat at a fly buzzing around. When we asked for a discount the manager refused to do anything, because he said I had eaten it. I did not eat the chicken and put it on the side plate to show the waitress. He got angry and threatened to call the police if we didn't pay! First time there and will never go back, who uses that part of the chicken in anything, it was all tough and dried out. read more

So, I have come here for years...and years and years... but this is the first time I was so super disappointed with the service that I may not be back. We were served either by the owner or the manager for the first time and I really don't think he should be doing this job. I had to go get someone to give us our menus and he forgot about our drinks. He spent his whole time talking with a the only other table in the place who were drinking beer. Sorry, you have a business to run. if you want to hang out and drink beer with your buddies you should at least make sure that the ONLY other table in the whole place is being fed. I saw when the cook put it on the warming area to be served out and it was at least 10 minutes until it came out and then it was lukewarm. Not sure if the owners read these reviews, but I am tempted to send them an email. Horrible, horrible, ignorant service. No wonder this place sits mostly empty until it is Salsa time. Time and time again I read people writing less than favourable reviews in regards to this restaurant. Surely people don't consider Julio's Bario good Mexican cuisine? As someone who spends multiple times a year in Mexico, I would have to say this place is as tasty and authentic as we get. Don't let appearances fool you. Once inside, you'll find a nice, clean, well decorated atmosphere. Staff was great and the meal was served up fast. No complaints here. I highly recommend the chicken burrito. With so few club atmospheres in the north side of Edmonton, beggars cannot be choosers. I think Azucar is a decent place should you be confined to the North. That being said if this place were downtown, Whyte or even the Westend it wouldn't be for me a first, second or third option. I went here during a Saturday night. They charge a 10$ cover charge after 10pm (and if you are there before 10 pm you must buy a food item) and a mandatory 2$ coat check, which is simply ridiculous on so many multi-dimensional levels. Also, we tried to make a reservation for a party of 15 and were told that they don't take reservations. After arriving we found out that there were indeed several tables reserved. Just feel that is dishonest and dishonesty is not something I value. This being said I had a good time here. The music is good including things like Spanish hip hop and pop. The atmosphere is definitely unique. It definitely has a Latino feel. In a lot of ways it reminds me of my Three Amigos visit in the south. But I think my fun was more with my party than with the establishment. Normally I'd give this place 3 stars, but one star disappears for dishonesty and a ridiculous cover charge. Azucar serves legit, tasty latin food. We had pupusas and empanadas to start, followed by tacos pastor (pulled pork) and tacos carnitas. They were all obviously made in house (including the tortillas), flavourful and spiced without being overly hot, although the beef in the tacos carnitas was a bit on the tough side. Our server was friendly, although timid - he confided it was his first day. But he was attentive and and found the answers to all our questions if he didn't know himself. We checked this place out on a weeknight for dinner, but we'll certainly be back on the weekend to experience the nightclub, live music and dancing. read more

Azucar is a really nice change of scenery in the Edmonton club scene. They play live music at different parts through the night as well as top 40. The majority of the music is latin and it's really cool to see everyone on the dance floor salsa dancing or doing their best impersonation. It is a really good crowd, everyone is so friendly but sometimes the bouncers can be annoying and power trip, but what bouncers don't? The best part is they serve soft tacos after midnight for all those people that have the munchies. I wouldn't be able to go here very often but when you get sick of all the other clubs in the city that are exactly the same, Azucar is refreshing. read more

I have never been to this restaurant before and when the opportunity came, I jumped at the chance. It was between an Asian restaurant or this one and since I haven't eaten here before, the selection was obvious. What a BIG mistake that was. We arrived at 6:30 pm on Friday night and there was a singer singing her songs, albeit a bit loud. Our waitress came not too long after and took our drink orders, which we we gave. Our drinks came at a prompt time and the same waitress came to take our food orders. I was seated at the end of the table so she was to my left, which gave me an excellent view of her. I had mentioned that the music was too loud, and the waitress seemingly agreed as she, herself, flinched when a high note was reached. I was glad that an employee of the restaurant had a hard time with the loud music because it meant that the music was indeed too loud. In hindsight, it was not the music that had that effect on her; it was her personality that made her that way. We ordered nachos (and I specifically said "No chicken". She even repeated "No chicken") and their famous Peruvian chicken (not so famous, by the way. It was on the same level as the roasted chicken that you would find at a local supermarket). While we waited for the food to arrive, another waitress brought our appetizer plates. My friend's plate had a dead bug on it, which she just blew off, because there are some battles you just don't even bother to deal with. Our food came (our nachos had chicken on it, by the way) and we ate. I did not finish my chicken so the waitress came and asked if I wanted to pack it up. I said yes and she took it away. She came back with my container and proceeded to clear the table. One of my other friends was absent from the table so the waitress asked my friend( the one with the dead bug on her plate) if that friend was done with her plate, to which she replied yes. My same friend then became engaged in conversation with another friend to her right, so she did not see the waitress take her unfinished food away. A few minutes later, the waitress came back without a container of the left-over food. So we asked where the food was and she said she had thrown it in the garbage. She had not bothered to ask my friend if she was done with it; she just took the plate and left. When asked about it, the waitress was adamant that she DID ask my friend and my friend had said she was done. There were five of us there; none of us heard her asking and all of us were positive that she did not ask. The waitress stuck to her story and insisted that she did ask. My friend asked to speak to the manager to which the waitress said "You don't have to be so rude about it!" The manager came, ten minutes later, with a plate of chicken and some rice on it. She plopped the plate on the table and said "I heard about the chicken, and since you ordered a half chicken and you ate a quarter of it, here's your quarter chicken. And I believe that waitress because she is my daughter". (Translation: you are a liar.) We could not believe our ears!!! Between the six of us, we have NEVER heard of such malicious treatment from a service provider to a paying customer in all our lives! We were in such shock that that the manager of a restaurant would actually accuse a customer of lying! We were all outraged. At this point, our night was ruined. We wanted to leave asap, so we asked for the bill. The manager had the audacity to return to our table to inform us that the kitchen staff was all upset over the chicken and that her daughter was crying. (I didn't realize our waitress was capable of shedding human emotions). The manager refused to listen to what my friend had to say (she just wanted the bill) as my other friends tried to tell her she was in the wrong. She added "That there are alot of people there and they are happy, just you (and she pointed to my friend) are not happy." That is because they do not her daughter as their waitress. Another waitress brought our bill and she apologized! She, the one who did not do anything wrong, apologized! We can only interpret this as an apology for the behaviour of the other two and an apology that we had to be victims of such terrible customer service. My friend thanked her for her apology; I guess not everyone who worked there were as awful as the OWNER and the OWNER'S DAUGHTER. There is a motto that these two have obviously not heard of. THE CUSTOMERS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT. Whether they truly are or not, the customers are always right. I am not a business owner, but I do know that in any type of business, your first and foremost responsibility is to make your customers happy. You don't have to agree with them, you don't even have to like them; you are to make sure that they leave your place of business with a smile on their face and a promise to come back. Horrible experience.. it's such a cool looking place so we were ready for a great supper and to enjoy some awesome looking bulldogs. When we walked in, one of the friends I was with said hello to one of the ladies working, and she totally ignored her. Then we found a table and sat down. There were two other tables and a birthday party happening so it wasn't very busy. But the servers that were working ignored us the whole time. They were even pointing at us and talking to each other about us but never came over. One lady kept talking on the phone and the other two were very slowly making drinks for every other table, but ours. If that was 'busy' for them they should have come over to atleast tell us instead of completely avoiding us. We waited around awkwardly watching them look at us but not come talk to us for about 15 minutes before we left. Super sad because the place had great potential. read more

I placed a take out order and was quite disappointed. None of the items were as described on the menu and one was really lacking. The prices charged is far too high for what you actually get. The Papa A La Huancaina was $8 and consisted of barely a single potato. The dish contained 4 potato slices approx 1/2 inch thick each, one sliver of boiled egg and one single black olive. Hardly as described on the menu and no where near worth $8. The menu said the Cesar salad had bacon in it. Mine did not. It was nothing but lettuce and a little bit of dressing and a few croutons. You can get a better Cesar salad at Wendy's. The menu said the flautas came with guacamole and sour cream. Mine did not. There were no napkins or cutlery included with the order. This was literally a disaster. A DISASTER. We had a large table and the wait staff could not handle it. There was constant confusion, delays, and mistakes. The waitresses could not remember who ordered what and often had to be reminded to bring a drink or meal that had been ordered previously. One member of our party was wrongly served (her meal was given to someone else) and she was promised a "comp meal," but then all they gave her was a 15% discount despite the fact that it was the house's fault. The manager didn't help serve the table or run food at any time, rather she just marches around and reprimands her wait staff in front of customers! When it came to pay it was more chaos and confusion! The owner wanted me to give them my friend's phone number "because some people didn't pay," which is total crap - the wait staff were in over their heads and didn't keep track properly, and who was she to imply our friends were thieves??!!! Out of kindness MY HUSBAND PAID THE REMAINDER BECAUSE THE MANAGER WAS THREATENING TO CHARGE THE WAITRESSES OR HARASS OUR FRIENDS! NEVER EVER EVER WILL I GO HERE AGAIN. ZERO STARS. I went to this club a few years ago and I met this Mexican exchange student. she looked tight that night she was wearing a mini and nice string. We danced kissed exchanged emails and numbers and the next day I headed back to Calgary. A few months later she contacted me through email while she had gone back to Monterrey we kept in touch I was surprised she remembered me. However long story short I ended up going down to Mexico and meeting up with her for two weeks, It was amazing we had sex twice a day for every day I was there went through a pack of condoms in no time. Team ED have read the negative reviews months ago and were leery of coming here but now have to wonder if they were from competitors? We have been here several times now and the food is authentic and delicious. Value for money is incredible. Most of the entrees can serve two people, they are that generous. Atmosphere is genuine..."D" has been to Mexico several times, and it was like walking into an off the track restaurant in good ole Puerto Vallarta. Puts a grin on my face. Azucar is well decorated and clean. Service is not lightning fast, but we do not go there for a quick meal. We go there for genuine Mexican food. Probably the best in Edmonton we have found. We have ordered several things off the menu and have yet to be disappointed. Portiions are large, fresh, and tasty. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it takes a bit of time for the server to kick in and pay attention to us. On the other hand, when you step inside it is pure Mexico and anyone who has been to MX knows what mañana is and the hour or two you spend eating there is well worth it. If you read Azucar the Latin dance club, don't let the mellow dinner crowd fool you because this place really does get wild after 9pm. They offer authentic mexican/ latin cuisine, which in all of my experiences has been delicious. I recommend the enchilada! The food prices are very reasonable however the alcoholic beverages are often not, bear in mind. If you plan dine and stay for the after party, I recommend going around 7pm, as they stop serving food fairly early, and it can be very difficult to get a table once the party is started. Latin style Decor and furnishings make you feel like you could be dancing in a club in Havana! By this point you are probably wondering why with all the great things I am saying about this place that I only gave it a 3, well. The service has always been lousy for me. I've been to this resturant, not only to eat but as well on Saturday nights for their live music. Very good food and music. So far Ive ate the bistec a la pobre (try it, it's delish) the plate is served with steak,fried plantain,rice,fries, and black beans..oh and an egg on top of your steak. My hubby eats the same plates always so I decided to try the chicken, didn't like it so much. Im not a burrito fan, i like more of the bigger plates with varity and it's quite healthy. It kinda reminds me of a popular portugues dish "bitoque", prices are a big higher and the staff seems to be pleasantly nice. The night scene is great for all age types and it's nice to salsa to live music. All in all I return to this resturant again. read more

Made reservations for 20 two weeks in advance. Tables were not ready. Service was TERRIBLE. Rude, slow borderline nasty :) We were told we could order off the menu but when we got there were told we only had three choices, stead, fish or chicken. Two of our group order rare steak, all steaks were delivered medium. When asked if they could be changed were told "no we made medium". Desserts were choice of cheesecake or rice pudding. All in all very poor service, decent food but definitely nothing I'd say super wow. Asked if they could turn the music down during dinner so we could converse. Were told "no others want it loud so it has to be loud." Can see it after 10, but not at 7. Don't go, not worth your time. read more
