I'm from Denver and my husband is from Tucson. When we moved to Duluth we thought we were giving up good Mexican food forever. We were apparently wrong. Our delivery order from Aztecas was amazing! Had the beef quesadilla and very disappointed in the filling. Reminded me of animal food. Couldn't find peppers or onions or any recognizable vegetable. The meat was a scoop of ground beef in a sauce. One in party had chicken and rice and it was very good. I guess I ordered wrong and expected too much? Will be a while before I return. This place does not have good food. It isn't that it is BAD, it's just that it is very bland and flavorless. The meat didn't seem to be very seasoned at all. The average meal is $10 and while it is a decent amount of food, it's not good food. Our server sucked, too. No personality and didn't bring us the things we asked for. read more

I tried to place an order over the phone, the woman(?) said, "I'll be with you in 5 minutes", but after 15 minutes of listening to a lot of random chatter about the customers, and hearing the customers checking out, I was cut-off... Over the next 1/2 hour I tried calling back multiple times, but kept getting a recorded message saying, "...the mailbox is full, there is no room to leave a message." Very disappointed. read more

Today. my Pastor, a friend of his and I went to eat at Aztecas Mexican Grill after Church. I ordered the seafood enchilada and my pastor ordered the shrimp enchilada, and the friend of his ordered a chimichanga. When the order came, my Pastor was given my seafood enchilada plate and I was given a beef enchilada plate. I had only taken two bites out of it when I came into the beef and realized that it was a beef enchilada and not the seafood enchilada that I had ordered. I told the server and he said that since I took two bites that there was nothing that he could do. My Pastor said that we want to talk to your boss. The server said his boss (Kenny) was not there but that he would call him. The server returned to say that his boss would not do anything. A compromise was reached that I would get a cheese enchilada (which I was willing to pay for). I waited for the cheese enchilada, but when it did not arrive I asked about it and was told to leave since I had not paid for the beef enchilada! So I left feeling like I had wasted my time on a place like that. The rating that I give this place is a "0 for terrible" and not even a "1 for Not good". I've eaten here before and although the food is not that authentic, it is not real bad for northern Minnesota. The staff is quick to seat you at Aztecas. You are quickly given chips and salsa, and this is refilled before your order arrives, which is fairly quick. The meal that I had - Shrimp Chimi - was not as authentic as i would have expected. The sauces were good, but the filling was not traditional. It was mostly green pepper/chiles and shrimp. The rice was not your usual mexican rice either, but was good. The refried beans were good. Overall I have been to Aztecas twice and would recommend the enchiladas over the chimichangas based on this experience. the service was great overall, but if I want better food I'll go to Mexico Lindo or Hasienda del sol. read more

I was just out having lunch by myself. I thought I'd give this place a try. I walked in, no one at the hostess desk. So I waited, as 4 employees walked by without even acknowledging me. A couple walks up to the counter and pays their bill. Someone immediately came to help them and after they were done he ducked back into the kitchen. So I'm still standing there. Finally I get a table. One employee asks my drink order. 5 min go by, no drink. Another employee comes and asks my drink order. As I'm telling him I already gave it to someone, I see the precious guy head to a booth I The dining room to sit and fold napkins. The 2nd guy gets my drink, drops it off without saying anything and heads straight to another table that was seated after me to take their food order. Mind you I've been patiently sitting for 20 min (menu closed so they don't think I just can't make up my mind). Finally the waiter comes back for my order. We'll see how the food is, but I don't hold high hopes since the place kinda smells strongly like disinfectant and the staff seems disinterested in being here. UPDATE: Food was pretty terrible. I ordered the combo with chimichanga and Chile rellenos. The chili was unrecognizable as a pepper and it was mushy. The decried beans were super watery. The chimichanga was edible. No one came to do a beverage refill or see how the food was. Had to go to the counter to get my own tab so I could. My wife and I moved from so cal 2 years ago and we love Mexican food. We have been eating at Aztecas since we found it shortly after we moved here. The food is amazing! The portions are huge and the menu has something for everyone. The recent management change has only made the service better. We were recently in California visiting our family; we had Mexican food a few times but the day we got back to Minnesota we had Aztecas for breakfast and dinner, it is that good. I would like to give credit to Ricardo who is not only a great waiter, but also from so cal, San Diego to be specific! The food is so good that lately I have been inclined to separately tip the chefs because the food is that tasty, I encourage others to do the same. Breakfast is awesome as are lunch and dinner, today my wife and I both had the Burrito Grande and it was delicious. Another bonus not only do they have great chips and salsa but they also give you a side of beans and cheese to enjoy with the chips and salsa. As a fan of IPAs, I was happy to see the are serving Lagunitas IPA! I prefer double IPAs but someone has to drive! BTW, their Pico De Gallo is the best I have ever had!! read more

Okay, so I've avoided going to Azteca restaurant pretty much since they opened - basically because of lukewarm reviews by friends and acquaintances. Duluth doesn't need another lackluster Mexican restaurant. I went today with my mother in law, my wife, and my 1 year old, after my kindergartner's Christmas program. We arrived right at opening time, about 11am. The initial presentation was what Americans have come to expect from the typical Mexican restaurant - loud colors, sombreros, and culturally archetypal commercial decor. We were greeted warmly by a soft spoken Mexican gentleman who clearly did not speak fluent English - exactly what you want when looking for solid ethnic cuisine! We were treated warmly, and our order only took about 15 minutes to prepare, give or take. I opted for the Tres Chiles plate - a chile relleno, a serving of Chile verde, and a serving of Chile Colorado with rice and beans. Everything was clearly prepared from scratch, was flavorful, and the portion sizes were enormous. I am encouraged now, and have a new favorite Mexican joint. I had heard these guys were under new management. If that's the case, keep up the good work, guys! I never did understand why scratch cuisine, well prepared and executed was expected to cost less in a Mexican restaurant; I would have paid more for what we recieved. Thanks Azteca. Ordered Azteca taco salad today. Didn't look bad when it was brought to the table, but for some reason it sprung a leak. The bottom of the plate had quickly filled with liquid. I grabbed a big napkin and soaked it all up, and believe me the napkin was soaked. And still juice was running from the bottom of the taco. I took four or five bites but couldn't eat anymore. The taco shell was all soggy on the bottom and very unappetizing. When the waiter came by to collect plates, I told him I couldn't eat it, it was all soggy on the bottom, and sitting in liquid. He took it away, not saying anything. Soon he came back and gave us a bill. Yes, he charged me $13.95 for a taco salad I didn't eat. I told him I wasn't going to pay for my taco salad since I didn't eat it but I would pay for my root beer. All he had to say was,"Next time maybe You should order something else on the menu. When you make a taco salad with chicken, there's a lot of juice." Really??? Are you kidding me? I've had many taco salads made with chicken that isnt running all over the place with liquid. And just so you know, there won't be a next time. I won't eat at your restaurant ever again. Very poor customer service as to the waiters attitude, no apology or would you like something else or your meal is free, including the pop. Nope, he couldn't have cared less. NO STARS!! I guess it's okay. I'd pick this place over the mess that is Little Angie's in Canal Park any day. This Mexican restaurant is located in a small strip mall, so as far as ambiance, there really isn't any. This seems to be more of a place that the locals would hit up, as it's far away from the tourist areas. Our hotel was near here so that's how we ended up eating here. The chips and salsa were pretty good -- they're nothing special, just exactly what you'd expect from a Mexican restaurant. Prices are reasonable. I ordered the Fajita Chicken Taco Salad and thought it was okay, but was disappointed that they toss in so many very LARGE vegetables and not enough chicken. It was my first time there. As soon as I pulled up it looked small but when I got in the building, it was amazing. Very colorful. Then I ordered a pollo azteca (grilled chicken with Spanish rice and queso sauce) with tortilla shells. It was so good. The plate looked so good and tasted amazing. I had been here a few times before and I really liked it. Even my kid (who hates everything!) LOVES Aztecas. However, while in Duluth on a shopping trip, we stopped in for lunch and it didn't go well. It didn't seem to be super busy, but there were so many unbiased tables that we had to wait for a waiter to clean one off to seat us. Ok, no problem. We we seated at a table that had wet seats and a wet floor, like maybe a drink had been spilled and not cleaned up properly. Still, ok. My daughter went to get her moustache from the toy machine like she always does while my friend and I looked at the menu and made our choices. Then we waited for our server. And waited. And waited. And waited. There were just 2 of them, so I'm still giving them the benefit of the doubt at this point and kept waiting... Then we saw 3 tables that were seated AFTER us had drinks, chips and salsa when we haven't even been acknowledged. The benefit of the doubt stopped there. We got up to leave, nobody noticed, so I stopped at the cashier stand where both servers were to let them know we were leaving and why we were leaving. The guy that sat us said "Well I didn't see you". He is the one who sat us!!!!!!! In his section!!!!!! So I told him that and walked out the door. I would have chalked it up to a bad day until I got that response. Seriously? And no apology? I have worked in the industry in pretty much every position in the house, front and back and management. Hmmm. This review even kind of surprises myself. The fam wanted to go to Aztecas for my niece's birthday. I hadn't had the most fabulous food there in the past, but I went because I knew there would be chips. (And my family). We arrived pretty early for dinner about 5, and had a party of 9, two of which were "energetic", but not horrible. The chips and salsa were pretty good. We finally ordered as the place got busier. Large selection but most Mexican food is pretty much the same. I was looking for something similar to a burrito I usually get at Mexico Lindo. I ended up ordering I think the Azteca burrito with queso over the top instead of "special" sauce. So, this burrito come out and it is about a foot long!! It had sides of guacamole, sour cream, beans and pico. Pretty tasty an I had enough left for 2 meals the next day too. The kids got burgers and fries which were actually pretty impressive. No el cheapo buns. Nice grilled bun and meat was cooked nicely. Probably one of the best kids meals we've had. Good fries too. My only reason for not giving 5 stars is service. The waitress, the ONLY waitress, ended up having about 12 tables at once. And I am pretty sure she hated us due to the kids being a little loud and us being a bigger table in general. Once our food was out, she didn't stop back to see if we needed anything. We waved down a bus boy for soda refills. How can service be good with one waitress for the entire restaurant?
