We have been coming here for years, it was always the fastest Mexican restaurant in the area. The food is solid and the ambiance looks like they have taken down a wall and reconfigured the tables to a more open feel. But we were there last night and I felt horrible for what appreared to be only 1 server, 1 table cleaner and 1 food runner in the entire restaurant. I dont know if they changed owners or what, but our usual servers were not there and it was not the fastest meal...but again the food was solid. I've been coming here for years and the food and service is always been really good. It is the traditional type of Mexican you get in St. Louis so there's no trying to be weirdly creative with some kind of fusion. The service is always prompt and the staff accommodating. Still consistently good food at alright prices. I like the shading in the window to help with the sun, and our server was nice and got us everything we needed. Our booth gave us privacy, the holiday decorations were fun, and I love the color and style of the place. Stopped by for dinner with my family. Large menu with plenty of choices. We ordered several dishes and they were all ok. I got the burrito azteca and it was good but not great. Just an ok taste on food. Chips were warm but salsa was eh. Not much flavor. Service was decent. She was efficient but not attentive. The restaurant was a little run down but looked fairly clean and is large. Good for groups! We had a fairly large group and they easily accommodated us. Of course it was a Monday and we did meet at 5:30 so I'm sure that helped, but we were never rushed or felt like we were a bother, so that made it very nice. I went here with my family a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. Their service is speedy and very friendly. They also had awesome portion sizes for what you got, my dish had 12 shrimp in it and a ton of rice, avocado, and pico for only 13.99! Everyone I went with really enjoyed their dishes. I didn't know what to expect as it was my first visit. Was on a lunch date and had to make it quick to be back to work for a meeting in an hour. My lunch date and I both got our plates quickly, and the food was pretty tasty. Said lunch sized on the menu, but I was plenty full from my "Speedy Gonzalez" . My husband and I stopped into Azteca on Friday for lunch - we hadn't visited this restaurant in a few years. Atmosphere was clean, authentic Mexican decor and music playing in the background. Christopher was our waiter and he did a fantastic job. Food was hot, well seasoned and we enjoyed our meal. We also liked their lime margarita's, chips/salsa. Unfortunately I have to rescind previous high marks as tonight's experience was horrendous. We were told they don't offer the chili relleno that's actually all over the menu, so what we went there for was evidently not even on their menu. Ever. (According to the waitress) so we had to select something else. Waitress got order entirely wrong, brought only one plate of food and an empty plate. Thin and crispy chips and a mild fresh salsa started things off (we used the ample flavors of habenero and jalepeno hot sauces on the table to spice the salsa up to our liking!). The house lime margarita on the rocks was just ok in taste, , but pretty strong. I ordered their version of fish tacos (Tacos Cancun) and although it was flavorful, the fish was fried in tiny cubes and very salty. There was a ton of lettuce, some pico, but not much fish. The meal had three tacos, rice and beans and it was very filling. My daughters meal was called The Azteca Platter, which was a huge assortment of taco, enchilada, a tostada and burrito, rice, beans, salad with her choice, the ground beef as the meat. Dined "in" but outside on one of their patio tables, for the 1st time since before COVID-19 closures. We had a lady who seemed like she was new/ in training. I wish I was fluent in Spanish so I could have explained what we wanted. She had trouble with customizations to our orders -- for the Alambre (House specialties) she had to bring out a guy who she called her teacher, to help her understand. She got that one, but did not keep the cheese sauce separate/ not smothering my Arroz con Pollo as requested. I still ate it, but would have like the dish better if I could have controlled the cheese. For this reason I think online ordering is best if you like to customize your order like we do. The large smashed (flattened) boneless chicken breast on the Arroz con Pollo was a bit difficult to cut with the butter knife, but I managed. Alambre was good; husband forgot to ask for cheese sauce on the side but based on my order not getting it on the side he wouldn't have either! read more

This is now my top two for authentic Mexican food. The setting is pleasant, fun, and energetic. The portions are massive for the price. They serve you chip and salsa when you get seated, I came here with my boyfriend on a Thursday night and it was normal, not too busy not dead, we didn't have to wait.
