Visited this establishment yet again ..and it never fails..amazing fresh tasting food..the service was spot on.the gentlemen playing guitar and singing made it all the better..when the location I normally went to burnt down I was devastated..but my daughter told me about the brick location I was so pleased ..the food and people are perfect..they catered my daughters birthday last year ..I cant speak highly enough. The atmosphere and staff are excellent. The food, however, is bland. We went inside and ordered takeout which included steak tacos, tacos al pastor, and the corte azteca. They only use one tortilla for the tacos which made them impossible to hold because they fell apart. Most authentic Mexican restaurants provide two for that reason. We had to use our own tortillas. The meat was barely seasoned, as well as the beans which tasted like they were poured straight from a can and blended with not even a pinch of salt. The rice was mushy and bland as well. I'm going to go out on a whim and assume the food here is dumbed down for the palate of the kind of people who live in the Toms River area. I'll be sticking to my authentic Mexican restaurants in Lakewood if I want my food to actually have flavor. read more

My friend and I were extremely disappointed. We began with a complimentary serving of salsa &chips. The salsa tasted like ketchup. My friend ordered a triple combo, including a taco. The whole plate was covered in refried beans and rice. Her taco was tiny, covered her sauce and had to eat it with a fork. I ordered a pork carnita sandwich. There were two thin slices of not at all tender or marinated pork, the rest of the sandwich was filler; avocado, cheese, etc. My plate was half french fries. We had each ordered a side of mexican corn which was basically corn on the cob with creme and cheese. It was cooked well. The only house made dessert is flan. I received my dinner & my friend received hers 10min later. We ate half our dinners and left the other half. The odd thing was, everything was bland. My top 5 favorite restaurants by far. The food is fresh and delicious. How do I know it is fresh? I order the same few things all the time (get the azteca combo!) and it is always slightly different each time depending on what ingredients they picked up fresh from the store. It is clean, the bathrooms are clean, the servers are accommodating, it is BYOB (they'll make you whatever cocktail you want as well if you bring the alcohol), and the food is awesome. If you haven't eaten here you should! Also the free chips and salsa that comes with your meal is some of the best salsa I have ever had. read more

Absolutely horrible food and service. I have gone on 3 separate occasions and it's 3 strikes, you're out. I have never seen more than 4 full tables in the entire place at one time and the servers can never be found. The carne asada was as dry as the Sahara desert, and their tortilla soup tastes like dish water. My boyfriend got some kind of combo meal, which was supposed to come with a taco. Not even kidding, the taco he received was the size of his thumb. I thought it was a joke until the waitress, who had to have been like 12 years old, told us that's the size of the taco on the combo platter. What a disgrace. Azteca is phenomenal. The tortilla soup is the best soup outside of Mexico. I don't know how they do it but it is so flavorful and cheesy. The portions at this place are huge! Every time I come here I can never finish my meal and always take it home; which is good because the leftovers taste just as good. The only thing this place has that is working against it is the location. It is located in the strip mall which gives you the feeling they want to be more of a take out place than an eat in joint. I think this place needs to move to a better location and start making serious $$ because the food is awesome . read more

This place is a hidden gem! Have been here a bunch of times and every time the food has been delicious! I love the tacos dorados (flautas). They are filled with a ton of chicken and the toppings are light and fresh. The guac and salsa are also very tasty. I finally got around today to trying Azteca for lunch. I'd been meaning to for more than a year now. I think I was putting it off because, as much as I want to really like it, everytime I have Mexican food with even the barest hint of authenticity (even in Mexico), it's never quite what I want it to be. That's probably because as a stupid American, I am programmed to want some Tex-Mex crap. What an adorable little place; I'm glad I didn't wait for it to go out of business before working up the courage to try it, like I did with the Peruvian restaurant that used to be across the street. Nestled in another of the ubiquitous strip malls that litter Route 9, once inside, you find yourself in a significantly more festive place than the exterior would suggest. The walls are adorned in orange and red hues, with murals of plains and mountains scattered throughout. There is a wooden miniature Mayan pyramid at the back of the shop which looks as though it may have been built with a purpose in mind (such as storing glassware), but makes for an interesting decoration. There is plenty of seating. When I went in, there was a good sized group of actual Mexicans eating, which, according to the rule of Chinese restaurants, augered well. Not desiring the most authentic experience, I inadvertently got one. I ordered the Torta Cubana, described as consisting of ham, eggs, and marinated pork, topped with lettuce, tomato, onions, avacado, cheese, and mayonaisse. Eh, almost. Served on a fresh bolillo and loaded with queso blanco, in addition to the above, this monster also had refried beans and strips of poblano peppers piled on. I am not a light eater, but this sandwich was almost insurmountable. More than that, it had all the look, taste, and feel of something off the street in Mexico City. I was transported. Referring back to what I said at the start about my feelings toward Mexican food, there were adjustments I would've made. I would have cut down on the cheese, or maybe put on two types totalling the same amount; queso blanco tastes, to me, a lot like mozzarella, and I find too much of either on its own to be a bit rich and overwhelming. The other thing I would've done is forgone the white pants today in favor of something in denim, and possibly focused more on leaning over the table. Should I have cause to walk the red carpet later and were someone to ask who I am wearing, I will affect my Most Interesting Man in the World voice, and proudly reply "Torta Cubana, my friend." Fries: The above sandwich came with them, unnecessarily, and damn, do they have the capacity to become some of the best I've had. To achieve that, they need to drain a bit more, and they need to be salted. Azteca will have reached the french fry pinnacle if they take those two suggestions to heart. I have to go now. I have to change my clothes, put something on these stains, and probably take a nap. I will be better prepared next time, and I am looking forward to it. read more

Had a glass of water never refilled it , left the dirty plates on the table even when we asked to have them removed only took one plate . We had dessert and had to look at the dirty plates. They start you out with chips and salsa that don't taste home made, I don't know if it's made in house, but it tasted like canned tomatoes. The quesadilla I had was a bit greasy and my friend's steak was overcooked. We wanted to stick close to our hotel and there wasn't much that wasn't pizza, fast food or chain in the very close proximity. So, this is where we ended up. Have been there a couple of times. Food is fresh and always very good. They are very accommodating. Brought our own sangria and they brought glasses and ice for us. Last night we placed a delivery order from Azteca for the first time. It won't be the last! The food was so delicious. We had it delivered and when the food arrived my husband asked if they included a takeout menu and the delivery person apoligized because he didn't have any with him. As we were digging in to the wonderful dishes, our doorbell rang. It was the delivery person again - he went back to get some takeout menus! We came here for my wife's birthday and had a part of almost 10 people. The environment was very clean and nicely decorated, the menu had a wide variety of choices and the portions were very generous. The prices were reasonable considering the size and quality of the dinners. You could expect a normal dinner to be between $12 and $16. The menu ranged from appetizers and salads, to chicken, seafood and Mexican specialties. The wait staff was very nice and friendly. We'll definitely be coming back! read more

I am going to give this place two stars because the service was good. Friendly staff and quick. But the food! Oh the food. Let me preface this with, we LOVE Mexican food. But the flavors in almost all of the dishes were just not appetizing. We had the tortilla soup (couldn't even finish it between 6 of us). Chorizo tacos, yuck. I don't know if the cheese was bad that day or what, but the nachos sucked too. Chips and salsa were their redeeming factor but can't base a whole meal off that.
