This restaurant is located in a small shopping center and the unassuming entrance is easy to overlook. The rest of the shops in the area are a motley mix of service stores such as a salon and massage shop. Next door is a bakery. The interior is eclectic with colored ceiling lights and couch in the entry. Once you enter, a long seating area -- something between a couch and a floor space with pillows greets you. Don't worry, there's also seated tables with colored and white tablecloths. The lighting is dim yet bright enough to see your meal. I love the cozy ambience. The waiter who greeted us was extremely friendly and nice. He took the time to explain the menu along with some other cultural, Afghani nuances. We ordered kabuli palow (lamb shank on basmati rice), mantoo (steamed beef dumplings), and kebab-e-gosfand, lamb kebabs. The flavor and texture of the food is absolutely amazing. You start with some cheese/mint/pita and then a salad with spices and a yogurt dressing. The kebabs are grilled with flavor yet are very moist and soft -- not dry or overly grilled as I've seen elsewhere. The rice is cooked in a broth so give it extra flavor. The lamb was juicy and fell right off the bone. The dumplings have an interesting sauce drilled on it, along with peas and yogurt. LA Native in San Antonio. Was in Western-Afghanistan for 9-months. Have always had EXCELLENT meals at Azro since first discovering it in 2018. My wife & I consider this to be our favorite restaurant in all of SA, TX. Will return again for more. (Open for dine-in during COVID; see new operating hours) Pre-COVID we've gone here with groups as small as 2 to as large as 10. Each time, our guests have come away amazed at how delicious Afghan food is. It is so good that my mother (in LA) had us look up another Afghan place to try while we were out there (note: we liked Azro better). We have also eaten here for dine-in and take-out during COVID. I'm trying to drive as much business their way as San Antonio would lose a true-culinary gem if this business were to close its doors. --------------------- The following is our "regular" order which has always served us well for a group of 4x adults (if only 3x, take out the extra order of mantou/aushak and the dessert): BEVERAGES: -hot mint-tea. Delicious. APPETIZER (This way everyone gets to try a little bit of everything): -1x combination plate -1x order of mantou or aushak (whichever does not come w/the combination plate). 08/16/18 We hadn't been in a few weeks and it was time to go back. We had tried a week or so before, but traffic on 410 was at a standstill so we went with Plan B. I had the Mantoo entree. It can also be had as an appetizer. Ten or so filled dumplings for the entree. Delicious. The husband had the kabob combo. He's been breaking away from his usual lamb dish. Scarfed it. Amir gave us a cake cookie from New Jersey. It is a white cake/cookie topped with half chocolate/ half vanilla icing. So good. Thanks Amir. I am on a journey of trying traditional foods from each country and Afghanistan was the first on my list. This was only my second time trying authentic Afghan food, but I definitely enjoyed this experience more than my first. I got the appetizer sampler which was all very enjoyable and an easy way to try a small variety of items from the menu. Both the green chutney and yogurt sauces were delicious and complimented the appetizer dishes well. The Kabuli Palow (Afghanistan's national dish!) had great flavor and was quite a large serving. Side salad wasn't anything special. Lastly, this was my first time having baklava so I'm not entirely sure what it's supposed to taste like, but it wasn't my personal favorite. Overall food was good and I would definitely be interested in trying some of the other items Azro has to offer! Tonight we had an excellent Afghani dinner at Azro! It's a family run place - mama in the kitchen and dad and son running front of house. The food was soo soo flavorful and service impeccable! We had the appetizer sampler, kebab combo and lamb shank both with kabuli rice. The chai and spearmint teas were excellent. Cannot wait to go back to Azro's!!!!! So I ordered the last 30 min before closing time with no idea what to order and was literally just curious of the food. The person whom took my to go order was so kind and helped me decide on a meal to order. Food was ready to go in 15 min. Omg the food was soooo delicious!!!! I was a little nervous and this meal choice was way out of comfort zone but I gave it a shot and loved every bite. The brown rice was a recommendation from the person who took my order and I don't regret it one bit. Meat and chicken had such delicious flavors and were so tender and just went with the flavors of the rice. The salad looked a little boring but it was actually very tasty. I had an excellent experience at Azro. I had an order of the Sambosa's which were quite tasty. They were a little smaller than I was expecting, but lots of great flavor. My entree I had the combo Kababs which is a combination of Morgh, Gosfand, Kofta, and Qaburgha. (Chicken, Lamb, Ground Beef, Lamb Chop). The meal also came with seasoned rice, I can't remember the name of which one I chose, but it was the lamb marinated rice. Everything was excellent. The plate came out looking beautiful and was full of nicely seasoned vegetables and you received 1 or two pieces of everything. Lots of great spices, and flavors - I definitely recommend this plate. If I had to choose just one of the kababs next time, here is the order I would choose - Lamb Chop, Chicken, Lamb, Ground Beef. As I said before, they were all excellent but the Lamb Chop was amazing. I actually spent some time in Afghanistan and I can honestly say this food was super authentic. I had a kebab combo and added some bread and it was absolutely worth all the hype. First timer with a bunch of veterans. Menu is vegghead friendly both with appetizers and plates - but note that some of the appetizers are the same as the vegetarian dishes. Hubby and I split an appetizer: something similar to a potato samosa that was very thin( not a negative, just describe) and served with yogurt sauce; and a veg plate: a pumpkin curry with rice that is very filling. I've never had Afghan food before and never knew an Afghan restaurant existed here in San Antonio until I read a review from one of my friends so I decided to give Azro a try. It's located inside a strip center. I was greeted by my waitress, a young woman wearing a hijab. I glanced over the menu and quickly decided what to order, the mixed grill kebab with brown basmati rice and a water. The waitress brought me my water which was an Ozarka water bottle. Due to COVID-19 they were serving beverages only in bottle and can form for waters and sodas. Then she brought me my salad. It was served with a dressing that reminded me a little bit of ranch. Minutes later after I had finished my salad, my entree arrived. Prior to coming here I looked at the food pics of bread served here at Azro. I didn't see bread on the menu so I quickly asked my waitress for it. She brought it to me as I was enjoying my meal that included lamb chops,pieces of lamb,chicken and beef. All meats and the brown basmati rice were very good. The bread was good too. It was oval shaped and not too thick or thin. So if you're looking for some good ethnic cuisine that isn't Italian, Mexican, Chinese or Thai then come here to Azro. read more

I have had some amazing Afghan food in Houston but Azro can definitely compete. I like the layout of the restaurant and how it's designed, not a huge restaurant but definitely enough seating available. Their Kash ke de Badjman (eggplant/yoghurt dip) appetizer is not as good as the one I'm used to in Houston but still worth trying. I usually don't like eggplant but they make it pretty good. The best dish in opinion is their Chapli Kabob, not only is the serving size perfect but it's seasoned very well. Also their rice with the raisins & carrots is something you should get with any meal you order here; it's very flavorful and I highly recommend it. I will definitely be coming back here to try some of the different things on their menu and I'm sure it won't disappoint. I highly recommend Azro for Afghan food. read more
