The technician, Joey Victoria, arrived on time and was courteous and polite upon entering the home. I explained that I have an inexpensive Amazon dual shower system with a diverter that developed a seized cartridge. The system was installed approximately 5-6 years ago, and unfortunately I no longer have the original documentation or exact brand information, although I was able to identify what appears to be the same system currently being sold. After discussing the situation, Joey left the house for approximately 10-15 minutes to speak with his supervisor. When he returned, two options were presented: 1. $150 research fee for the cartridge I was told I could pay $150 for them to research whether a universal replacement cartridge could be found. I was told there was no specific timeframe for the research and that the $150 would not be applied toward any future repair. When I asked whether the existing cartridge would actually be removed so it could be physically identified, I was told it would not be removed because there was a possibility it could not be reinstalled afterward. That left me confused about what exactly the $150 research fee would accomplish if the existing cartridge wasn't going to be physically inspected or identified. 2. Replace the existing system with a Moen valve/diverter The second option was to replace the existing valve and diverter with a Moen system, accessing the plumbing from behind the shower wall. I was told the valve and diverter alone would be $1,200+, without the shower hardware. However, when I asked for a breakdown of parts versus labor, the answers were unclear. I was told they would provide a package price including labor, but I couldn't get a firm number, estimated labor hours, or a clear explanation of exactly what the quoted labor would include. I was also told that work over $1,000 would have to be run through the supervisor. The entire visit took nearly two hours, and throughout the conversation I was simply trying to understand what I would actually be paying for. I specifically requested a written quote showing parts and labor, and I was told the information would be emailed to me by 5 PM that day. Nothing was ever sent. My concern isn't necessarily that plumbing work is expensive. I understand that replacing a valve can involve significant labor and accessing a wall can add complexity. My concern is the lack of clarity and inability to obtain a definite written price or scope of work after spending nearly two hours discussing the job. As a homeowner who isn't a plumbing professional, I need a contractor who can clearly explain the options, costs, scope of work, and what I'm actually paying for. Joey was courteous and professional in his demeanor, but the quoting process was extremely vague. Based on this experience, I would be hesitant to proceed without a very detailed written estimate.
