He can't believe it; and asks for an itemized bill. What he gets back reads: Tap with hammer = $2. Knowing where to tap = $9,998. An inescapable fact: [modern] cars are expensive, complex machines. If they were simple, there'd be no need for mechanics. It's not the tapping that's expensive, it's knowing where and how to tap. Where I admit I struggled is that the fix was to reconnect the actuator, and the bill came back for $165 (all in - one hour of labor). Despite the price, I realize full well: 1. There was a process in getting to the issue, and then verifying it was fixed, involving both road and shop testing. 2. The reality was likely more technical that itemized in the invoice. My Ikea desk seems it would be ~10 parts coming together in under 30 minutes no sweat. In reality it took two people two hours, intermingled with profanities. 3. Tapping with a hammer (reconnecting a part) is easy, having the skill set to determine how and where to tap is not.
