It really feels like a home cooked meal made with care. While the prices aren't the cheapest, the quality and taste absolutely justify it. You can tell there's a lot of attention put into each dish. My personal favorite is the lechon kawali paired with their garlic rice. It is crispy, rich, and packed with flavor. The dining space itself is cute, cozy, and very clean, making it a perfect little date night spot. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, which adds to the overall experience. It isn't the fastest service, so I wouldn't recommend coming here if you're on a time crunch. It's a great place to sit down and relax, and really enjoy the food. One thing to keep in mind is that their hours can be a bit unusual, so it's definitely worth checking ahead before you go. Location-wise, it's also a great stop. It is just a short walk from the local brewery and the rail trail, making it an ideal place to grab a meal after a walk or before heading out for a couple of beers. Overall, a fantastic spot if you're looking for comforting, high quality Filipino food in a cozy setting.

But there are a few universal similarities with Latin food: rice, seafood (because I'm a pescatarian) and garlic- to name a few. Then there's their halo-halo dessert. So when Hapág Bistro popped up in my Yelp pages- in Highland, NY no less and conveniently close to work- I was in. Hapág is cozy the second you step in here. My eyes immediately went up to the ceiling where these folks have faux greenery+florals hanging across the space. It actually softens Hapág and adds a little "nature". I was here on a tight clock and didn't have time to sit down for a full meal. But while I looked at the menu at work, one thing immediately jumped at me: halo-halo. This thing is sweet. It's a sweet explosion of shaved ice, creamy ube goodness, jellies, fruit and leche flan tucked in like little treasures. Then comes the ice cream on top tying the whole shit together. Every spoonful is cold, creamy and sugary in the best way. Shoutout to my girl Danielle, who was super pleasant and had one of those smiles that totally makes the place feel even more welcoming. Next time I'll actually stay long enough to eat real food- but for a quick pop-in, Hapág came out on top with dessert alone.

Admittedly, I fall a lot closer to the latter, but I appreciate the juxtaposition. According to the sign outside, they specialize in fresh dressed game birds, undoubtedly sourced by the group of guys running the attached gun shop (which is also decorated by some local taxidermist). I can't understand why they have a photo of that reality TV star that used to fire people up on the wall, but that's neither here nor there. The staff did seem annoyed that we wanted to spend way too much money getting sandwiches and groceries with them, but at least they were efficient, and the selection is eclectic and fun. They've got fresh wild turkey eggs, a surprisingly great selection of cheese, all kinds of house-cured meats, as well as the standard array of deli meats with which they'll make you some pretty decent sandwiches. There's also all sorts of sauces, jams, pickled pineapple (!) local honey, beer, cider, some bizarrely priced minced dried onion...I had a blast poking around and overpaying for a random assortment of edible delights (although some were more delightful than others). I'd like to come back with more of a plan to try their poultry, or at least some fresh ground beef, the bacon, and more.

The staff on hand were super friendly,…read moreand our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and was very patient with all our questions and walked us from beginning to end of the Sake brewing process. The walking tour lasted for ~45 minutes or so, with the guide ending with a tasting of three different Sakes and pieces of Sushi to pair with. The building itself was quite modern looking (they just built it recently) and very well-kept. You get to see the entire brewery and the equipment they operate with, and there's also a good amount of seating at the front for after the tour. There's also an area where you can look at Sake for sale and buy to take home. Overall, it was a very fun and educational experience, and I would definitely recommend if you're into learning more about Sake!

It was with tremendous surprise and appreciation that they are using water from the Hudson run through reverse osmosis for the Saki. Our trip was unplanned, but I would recommend making a reservation and scheduling a tour ahead of time as I am sure our ability to get an easy table was mostly based on luck. They have a limited, but nice snack menu and an extremely attentive staff to make sure you are both informed and well taken care of.
