Lunch today at Avrà with friends was incredibly fresh and absolutely delicious. The lamb chops were life-changing. The Greek salad tasted like it had just been picked straight off the vine--right there on 5th Avenue. The Kalamata olives, feta cheese, and olive oil were so good I honestly felt like I could bathe in that olive oil. We also had the tuna tartare, grilled octopus, and a perfectly cooked branzino. One of my friends--who clearly lacks both pride and manners--grabbed the fish head with his hands and cleaned it out like it was his last meal. Not exactly fine dining behavior, but memorable. The grilled dorado skewer special was also excellent. The ambiance is bright and open, and we loved our waitress--she really understood our vibe and seemed slightly amused by us, which made the experience even better. This is a seafood known place. But they have some meat options as well. This is a spacious restaurant with some outdoor seating as well. The bar area is always crowded from the times I have been here. It is a nice bar though. We had a great waiter who had a sense of humor and was friendly. Some of the dishes we got were lamb chops, filet and a fish dish. The drinks here were fine nothing too special. They did mess up on my drink they gave me a french martini or something rather than a french 75 which is what I ordered. But they made it right and gave me the drink I wanted. For desserts they had this chocolate layer cake that looked out of this world. I did nit try it but I had chocolate ice-cream and a decaf cappuccino they both were also very good. We had a party of 3 for lunch at Avra in midtown, NYC. They get our highest marks for service, delicious food and a delightful ambiance. Reservations fill up quickly so get them early. Service: Our meal was made so much more enjoyable due to our waiter, Giorgio's excellent customer service. He really took care of us and was prepared with information about our dining preferences noted on our reservation. He was charming and funny and so welcoming. The manager also stopped by to chat for a few minutes and was equally wonderful. Food: We had wonderful starters of bread and dip with olives and pimento as well as crudite. All 3 of us selected from the $39 prix fixe lunch menu: lamb chops, branzino and salmon. Each meal was cooked to perfection. Ambiance: Holiday music was playing and the restaurant seemed buzzing with excitement. People were happy and enjoying their company. I went on a Saturday and overall had a nice experience, though there were definitely a few service hiccups. When we first arrived, someone came over quickly to ask about water, but since not everyone in our group was there yet, we asked to wait. A few minutes later, another server came and asked again, and we still wanted to hold off. Once everyone arrived, it was surprisingly hard to find a waiter to actually take our order, and we were left waiting for a bit until someone finally came over and we ordered the prix fixe menu. For appetizers, I got the spanakopita while others got the Greek salad. The spanakopita was on the milder side and didn't have much flavor, and there was too much phyllo dough compared to the filling. I ended up mostly picking at the feta and spinach inside. The Greek salad, on the other hand, was really good. It was fresh, light, and well-balanced with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, olives, and feta. For my main, I ordered the chicken frites. The chicken was grilled, thin, and cooked well, which I liked. The fries were thick-cut , not my personal preference since I usually prefer thinner fries, but they were still good. It also came with a tomato topped with tzatziki, which I wish had been plated separately because I would've liked to dip my fries into the tzatziki more easily. For dessert, I got the fruit plate, which included strawberries, oranges, melon, and pineapple, though the selection seemed to vary a bit between plates. We also sat outside in one of their booths, which was really nice and made for a great atmosphere. One downside was that the bathroom plumbing wasn't working properly, so only one bathroom was available for the entire restaurant, though they were actively working on fixing it. read more

Fam was visiting from out of town and us Greeks like to go and enjoy a good bite from our own. So we decided to check out this location to change up from the last location we went to. I actually prefer the rockerfeller location I thought the food was better but more so the ambiance. The service in both were amazing. But the rockerfeller location is way more quiet and just beautiful being that it's two floors. So here's the run down... the spankorizo was not bad a little dry. The Horta was horrible like super gross. It was like boiled lettuce. The lamb was great the filet was great. The ceviche was good but every time I took a bite I thought I was in a sushi spot so it didn't fit the menu and the Greek salad is always great as well as the dips. I visited Avra with a friend and we sat at the bar for drinks and an appetizer. After about an hour, a bartender asked us to leave, telling us directly that we hadn't ordered enough and that "is how they make their money." For a restaurant positioning itself as upscale, this was a shockingly rude way to treat paying guests, and we told him so. I had been to the restaurant a few times and my friend is there at least once a week. The bar area had begun to thin out and we were quietly enjoying our evening when this happened. My friend also mentioned a prior incident at the bar where her party was overcharged, and when this was raised with a bartender at that time, both the manager and the bartender were unpleasant and pushed back rather than resolving the issue. Given that earlier incident and now this one, the rude attitude at the bar does not appear to be isolated. Management should know that this kind of treatment undermines the experience the restaurant is otherwise trying to sell. We won't be rushing back to the bar at this location. read more

Made a day-of dinner reservation on a Saturday cause we were craving Mediterranean food and we enjoyed another Avra location by Midtown which we enjoyed but ended up liking this place even better! Service was what you'd expect at a more upscale restaurant - attentive, prompt, and friendly. For food we got the filet mignon and the swordfish as our entrees which were both great. Filet mignon was cooked exactly how I liked it and they did give me a heads up that it's just the steak so would be best to order a side which I did. Swordfish was great as expected as well. For dessert I got the olive oil cake which was also good but the greek yogurt was actually one of the best I've ever had! The vibe of the place very nice. The environment is beautifully decorated. A lot of artificial flowers are used for decoration, and there's no way around it since flowers are quite expensive in the US. The service is very attentive. They changed the tablecloth when the table got dirty and refilled hot water twice. The hot water here has lemon slices in it, which is more than what other restaurants offer. The soup of the day is very similar to the dough slice soup my grandmother from Henan used to make. It's such a familiar taste. The crab leg cake is incredibly delicious, with the sweetness of crab legs combined with the aroma of cheese. Food 8/10 Very fresh fish and exceptional olive oil. Definitely get the branzino-super tender and light. The appetizers were all solid, not the most memorable, but I enjoyed them all. We got the tartare, tomato salad, Avra chips, and the three dips. I thought the Avra chips were better than the ones at Milos, and the yogurt dip was also very fresh. But I think my biggest qualm with the food here is the fact that their pita came in the form of chips and not bread. I dislike chips so I think that honestly took away 2 points. If there was bread, I would've been able to soak up the olive oil even better. Atmosphere 9/10 We got a booth that fit nine people, very cute and kind of separate from the rest of the dining room, so it felt very intimate and perfect for a birthday celebration. I came here for a birthday lunch in a group of 8 people on a Saturday around 2pm. They sat us in the top level in a nice booth towards the back of the restaurant which was nice since it made our reunion feel a lot more intimate and quiet. Our server got the drink and food orders for our table promptly when we were ready and all the items came out in a very timely and coordinated manner. My boyfriend and I both opted to get the prix fixe menu for lunch since it comes with 3 courses and is very reasonably priced. There are a wide variety of items to choose from for appetizer, entree, and dessert which seem to accommodate for different dietary restrictions, something I appreciated. For my three courses I tried: - Daily Soup Special: this was a creamy cauliflower soup that was super rich, and comforting. The flavor was vibrant and there was a tangy, sweet punch from the balsamic glaze on top. Presentation was beautiful, I almost didn't want to eat it. Portion size is also incredibly generous. I would recommend asking what their soup special is since they are apparently all equally as good. Perfect for a cold rainy day! - Fish of the Day Special: on this day the special was a branzino filet paired with some couscous. The presentation again was very nice. The fish was flaky, buttery, and so full of flavor. It felt lean, healthy, and fresh. The flavor was delicious and very balanced without any element being too overpowering. The couscous was tomato based so it had a vibrant color, and tangy/acidic flavor, but was over a bed of beets which provided a really nice sweet and refreshing contrast. Very filling and enjoyable! - Strawberry cheesecake: small portion which was great considering how full I was at this point. This was a delicious cheesecake, it had the perfect density with a balance of airy fluffiness that made it feel light but enough substance for it to be satisfying. Not too sweet and the strawberry flavor didn't feel artificial or overpowering. Truly delicious. My boyfriend ordered a different set of things but I did try some of his spanakopita which was very good. The pastry was golden and perfectly crispy. It came with a delicious filling of cheese and greens. Two large spanakopitas per portion which I felt was very very generous. Overall, I had a very positive experience here for a weekend lunch. This is a perfect spot to host a birthday lunch with a big group since the prices are reasonable and the ambiance is super nice/elevated. The food is high quality and the service is also very good. They have a downstairs area as well which is more quiet and is just beautiful. Very spacious, aesthetic, and clean. Their lunch prix fixe is truly an amazing deal.
