This has been my one and only trip to Abilene airport. I avoid Enterprise when possible given the bad service I've received from them previously, so Avis was my only option at this airport. They clearly do things... differently... here from what you'd experience at other, larger airports and rental car companies. In some ways, I guess you could call it trusting. In other ways, it just seems lazy. When I arrived, I was standing at the counter just waiting for someone to come back. No clue where they were, but there were about a dozen keys strewed out on the back table and someone could have easily walked around the counter and just grabbed one before walking out to the car lot. The guy who worked there clearly had zero clue that people coming to the airport and renting cars might be new to the area and not know the layout of the lot. I went out and headed in the wrong direction before doubling back and finding where my car was. There was no one to document any pre-existing damage on the vehicle, so I went ahead and took my own photos, which are now posted to this page. It was a frustrating experience. When I got back to drop off the car, the spot I got it from was filled, so I parked it as close as possible. As I was walking into the airport, a lady asked for help pulling up the odometer on the car she was renting and I didn't know how to do that for the vehicle type she was in. We figured it out with a bit of help from Google. Of course, that was my tip that no one came out to the car to evaluate the car upon return, so I went back to the spot, got my own mileage reading, took my own finished product photos, and walked in. read more

I have had to travel to Abilene for work several times in the last six months, and used Avis for each trip. I am always impressed with their friendliness, service, and willingness to go above and beyond to help customers. Recently, I left behind a personal item in the vehicle, and Holly was incredibly accommodating in helping get the item back to me after I'd already returned home. Avis is not worthy of even 1 star, I am on a limited income, and rented a car to drive from Washington State to Texas, rented the car for a week. I paid the full rental fees, paid for insurance and deposit at time of rental. Dropped car off on time, and full tank, three days later was charged an extra 1300 dollars, unsure why. I called they said rate hikes, after I paid in full already? I don't think so, they said we will remove the carge gave them the info to do so, nope did not do it. This is theft, I will never rent from them again, very unprofessional, and they seem to steal from their customers, they are many reviews of the same thing on BBB web site Avis you should be out of bussiness. read more

I called to ask about any vans available and the guy who answered the phone was very rude and kept talking over me . They did not have any vehicle I could use. I will never attempt to rent from Avis again ! Horrible service ! read more

Avis at the Abilene airport gave me a defective vehicle. It was extremely difficult to get Roadside assistance. Left me stranded in a strange town. Vehicle died again two days later. They finally replaced my vehicle and charged me $151 for "Roadside Assistance " extremely poor service. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!!! read more

Quick and easy. Had the VW Jetta. Nice ride great gas mileage 41.3 mpg, seats are a little tight for a bigger person due to the side wing things and it does react to wind more than my Camry. read more

VERY SEXIST EXPERIENCE. Worst experience EVER and that includes foreign travel where females are not respected. I made a reservation through AARP for a rental at this Avis location. My vehicle had broken down during the Winter Storm of the century in Texas. After troubleshooting in the small town where my vehicle broke down for a week and not having ANY transportation, my vehicle was towed to a dealership in Abilene. I had spent the entire day at the dealership hoping my vehicle could be repaired quickly. At the close of business I was told my vehicle wouldn't be repaired until the end of the week. This was Monday. The dealership provided a ride to the Abilene airport to pick up an Avis rental I had made through AARP after getting the news of my vehicle repair. I had talked to Enterprise Rent a Car earlier and they informed me that I would be lucky to find a rental, as all of the rentals in the area had been taken to the bigger rental hubs because of the storm and Enterprise wouldn't have any cars available until Thursday. I get to the Avis counter and the attendant couldn't pull up my reservation that had been made an hour earlier through AARP roadside. I offered to pull up the confirmation number on my laptop and the attendant said it was no problem for him to start a new reservation. He explained to me that he had only two rentals left, an Expedition and an F-150 pickup, but he would give me my choice of either of the upgraded vehicles at the rate of my reservation. As I told him the Expedition would be fine, a large obnoxious man entered the booth and began peering over the attendant helping me and asked him what he was doing. I could tell the attendant was intimidated and uncomfortable immediately. The attendant helping me responded to the other attendant that my reservation was for an economy vehicle and Avis had only two vehicles left, being an Expedition and an F-150 pick up. The bigger guy said, "Give her the pickup!" I said that would be fine, as my current vehicle is a half ton pickup also. The big guy started telling the attendant helping me what the day rate was for the pickup. The attendant helping me explained that he had already offered me my choice of the two vehicles at the economy rate. As the attendant helping me was finalizing my reservation and about to hand me back my drivers license and credit card, the other attendant said, "What's that? Her name on her license doesn't match the name on her credit card." I explained that one surname was my maiden surname and that the other surname was my married surname and that I have documentation with me that I can show him. He immediately cut me off and said the only documentation he needed to see was a credit card with a surname that matched my license. I tried to explain to him that I have documentation to prove that each name is one and the same as me and this had never been a problem before. He told me that he wasn't renting the vehicle to me and that it was Avis corporate policy not to rent a vehicle in that situation. I was shocked and dismayed. I hadn't experienced anything like this before and as I said, I do travel a lot. Even internationally. I asked him what I was supposed to do, since there were no other rental vehicles available in the area and I was stranded two hours away from home and my animals were stranded one hour from the airport and from me to care for them. He said, "Call an Uber!" He also yelled across the rental car lobby at the Enterprise attendant and said, "She's trying to use a credit card with a name that's not on her license." (Like I was stealing someone's identity or something.) He said, "You guys wouldn't rent to her either, would you?" Not only was he behaving in a rude and obnoxious manner but very unprofessionally as well. This was an extremely horrible and toxic experience that I never want to encounter again nor do I want any other female traveling alone to experience. HE put me in a very unsafe and risky situation leaving me stranded in the middle of nowhere at night with no means to get back to my pets or back home. I will never rent from another Avis Rental Car center and I am sharing my experience with everyone I know to prevent other women from being harassed, ridiculed, bullied and subjected to a hazardous unsafe outcome created by another incompetent individual like this guy trained by Avis Car Rental enforcing Avis's sexist corporate policies. read more

Somehow my car reservation pick up time was changed in their system. I arrived at 1:00, but the lady said I wasn't due to pick the car up until 5:30 so I would have to wait until all her reservations for 1:00 were filled to see if there were any cars left. I waited about 20 minutes, thankfully there was one car left for me!!!! The lady at the counter was nice. It's easy to get your car and return it. My wife and I rented a car for two days. It was great being able to pick it up so easily the night we did. We were able to make the adjustment before arriving to have the vehicle extended an extra day when we realized we needed it for two rather than one. When we returned to check the vehicle in we found that we had arrived "BEFORE" they were to close, yet the person who was supposed to be there was gone. We were then charged for a third day even though we returned it before the end of the two days when it was checked in the next morning. I would suggest before returning the vehicle to call and verify someone is there or take a picture of the place with a time stamp showing that you were there before closing so that you don't get charged for an extra day. read more

I just want to thank the gentleman who took care of us on July 4. He was courteous, kind, funny and informative. Avis has a good crew there in Abilene and I sure appreciate their superior customer service. We had gotten in a wreck the day before and were denied a car by Enterprise in Brownwood because we didn't have a major credit card. Obviously, Avis wants and appreciates its customers more because all they require is a credit check and that your account has the full amount of the rental. Much more flexible.
