They gave us a damaged van and told us to take pics. I think the agent knew we were going to get charged for existing damage. We took pics and videos of the damage. They accused us we added damage in the middle of the existing damage. We were charged over $1,400 above what we agreed to pay. Avis was ok - in the need got me in a nice Volvo for our trip but we had to wait around a half hour for our size car to be ready - despite prepaying fully and being there right at and after our check in time. There was a separate line for preferred but only 2 working and no means for fast tracking members. We flew into Frankfurt from the US on June 18, 2025. I want to thank John (10) for being a top-notch customer service agent at the Avis Counter upon our arrival to pick up a car. He was so helpful in changing the car that had been issued to us (as surprise it was completely different from what we ordered). The car was available, no wait and had the navigation system we asked for. Volvo SUV Drove great. All the vacation/holiday plans were made except for the car rental. Having rented many times in the past we did not think this particular rental overseas would be any different... MISTAKE! Avis was a new car rental company for us, chosen because they had the size vehicle we were looking for, a seven-passenger van. From the get go there were 'issues.' The van we selected was not available so we had to take what was... a nine-passenger van. Ok, there are five of us traveling and extra room is a plus. Forty-five minutes later we were in the garage at the Frankfurt airport with paperwork in hand and anxious to hit the road. We checked out the NOTES OF DAMAGE annotated on our paperwork and they correlated. Missing was the amount of dirt inside and out of our vehicle. We would guess that the van had just been returned and there was no time to clean it before we arrived. The biggest unexplained and unexpected falsehood came later. Notification was in the form of an email from Q Owen's, international customer service, "Charges billed are valid and will be upheld!" We had damaged their Mercedes to the tune of over $1,000! Our credit card had been charged and there was nothing we could do/say. After three months of communication with Avis and asking them to look at the FACTS on the rental paperwork concerning the damage we are still nowhere. The last email we received 7 August 2024 stated, "if you would like to exclude this risk in your next rental you can purchase an excess waiver for a small additional charge." Is this what happens you don't purchase their additional coverage? One way or another they are going to get your money. Final thoughts... Keep Avis in your rear-view mirror! read more

Worst rental car experience ever. People standing in line for 30+ minutes and then told they are in the wrong line and need to go to the back of an even longer line. I "lucked out" and was in the right line. 45 minutes now. Ridiculous. And I hear two people chatting in the back office! Come and help your co-workers and open more lines! I wish I had read these reviews before I rented. I will never rent from Avis again. To start, they didn't have the car I reserved and the "similar" option was not similar. Then the car they gave me stunk of smoke that took days to air out. The part i had the hardest trouble with was shady add-ons. I added the insurance at the airport and they snuck in road side service as well (I guess my fault for not noticing). I understand I'm in Germany using the Euro, but it was nearly impossible to get any of the numbers to match up to that of my reservation, compounding the confusion and sticker shock when i returned the car. On top of that, I was charged an extra day when we were 1 hour late getting back (yes, in the agreement, but still excessive). The final insult was when I called their customer service number to at least get clarification of all the charges. Zero empathy or understanding, totally robotic and borderline hostile when explaining the charges. My reservation plus insurance should have been around $600, my total bill was over $900. I fought it and prepared a website www.avisfraud.com ready to go if they refused a reimbursement. after 14 months My credit card company chase who were great through all of this finally had the charge reimbursed. They gave me the car registration with the keys (which should have been in the front compartment) and when I returned the car- I told them I accidentally left it somewhere but I will return it. Instead they said not to worry. Then I came back to Los Angeles to find out that the my charged me $180 for the registration. Yes!!!!! Insanely ridiculous! BEWARE... This business is SCAM city!!! (I also wish there was a zero star option) We have rented twice from AVIS (2012 and 2017). In 2012 it was the 1/2 inch scratch under the front air dam (you had to feel for it... it was invisible without extra bright lighting)... cost ~670 Euros. In 2017 it was extra unneeded insurance that was passed off to my wife as a damage deposit... the only damage was to her wallet ~ 800 Euros. I've only had the car 2 days out of a 2 week rental and they already are screwing me. My company booked it and paid with a CC, yet when I arrived they asked me for mine in case there were any damages. After being reassured 3 times due to my inquiries, they assures me there is no current balance and I won't be charged. 3 hours later my bank account has a hold on $2100. I call to have it switches to the company CC and EVERY customer service number says it HAS to be dealt with by the airport office, and that they are too busy to answer the phone. So I have to drive 3 hours to the airport in the middle of my business trip so my pregnant wife at home can fill up her gas tank. That's IF they even change the payment info. Then they charged me 30 € after the rental for providing my info to City of Köln, for a speed ticket (of 25 €). Picked up a black skoda in the tight airport underground car park.Gave the car a quick check over and all appeared okay. Didn't have the car for more than eight hours and upon return we were directed to park in a returns bay which was floodlit only to have a minute mark pointed out to us and a damage note raised. I stated on the note that we had not been near anything that could have caused that mark and as it was soooo small we would have never seen it when picking up the car. Avis conveniently ignored my written statement and debited by card £560. Then I had a further debit taken, which when I challenged them about this through my credit card company as well as the initial damage claim, they claimed it was to deal with a traffic offence, which we never committed. We didn't even see a policeman or get a parking ticket and if it was a speed camera, we have never been contacted by the police. Absolutely shocking behavior and shocking customer service. From reading similar complaints you might think the attendants were on commission?? I shall never use AVIS/Budget again and I strongly recommend others do not use this appalling company. read more

This review is written for those who plan to rent a car from the avis select series: The most important thing upfront: stay away! I rented a VW Golf GTI. The availability of this car was guaranteed to me in the voucher. When I arrived at the counter to pick up the car, Avis told me that the car was not available because the pre-Rentee did not return it. Ok, this might happen and is beyond Avis's control. However, then I would at least expect that Avis offers another, comparable car from the Select Series for the same price. This was not done, though. I could only rent a Porsche Macan for an additional price which would have costed me nearly double the price that I originally wanted to pay. read more

We rented a car and dropped it off at the Frankfurt Airport (Germany) in Terminal 2 on a Thursday. My husband had left his Bavarian hat from Oktoberfest in the car. We went to the airport Terminal 1, the next day and asked the agent at the desk if it had been found. She took the time to make several calls and located the hat! Horrible experience. Prior to returning our car after our German vacation, we re-fueled it right outside the airport. A few weeks after we returned home, we received a re-fueling bill almost 80 Euro plus tax!!!! Apparently we should have presented the gas station receipt at the time of drop off or they charge you for a full tank of gas. Since their staff was too incompetent to ask us for the receipt we had no idea of this "policy" (which they have not been able to document in a contract). We escalated with Avis and even provided a copy of the credit card bill that proves that we fueled up at a gas station right outside the airport minutes before dropping off the car. They insisted that this isn't proof enough and that the original paper receipt was required. Of course, we didn't keep this receipt. A simple look at the gas gauge would have shown that the tank is full and every time I have rented a car in the US, that was all that was ever required. Do not rent from Avis! Their agent in Terminal 2 would not release the car for me unless I took on their full insurance, even if it wasn't mandatory. He was nickel and diming me for everything. I filled out reservation with insurance I want and no GPS yet he wanted me to pay for GPS because those were the only cars they had. My bill skyrocketed from Reservation of USD 299 to Euro 400+. There was nothing on the car. returned exactly like I got it. 6am a guy would not come up at the return because he said his shift hasn't started so I had to drop the key off at the off duty drop off box. This was the last time I have rented from AVIS. Customer beware, or you will fall prey to the methods of their staff. After a long overnight flight I picked up my car in the morning. The representative talked me into buying the full tank of gas option (prepay and return the car with an empty tank) advertising it as way cheaper than fueling up at a gas station prior to return. I have two things to say about that: Firstly he only mentioned the net price of about 48 Euros, not the price including the sales tax, making it about 58 Euros for the full tank. It is very uncommon in Germany to quote the net price without sales tax. Where ever you look in Germany the quoted prices already include the sales tax. So the 48 Euros (I believed to be the price including sales tax) sounded reasonable to me, not realizing it really was 58 Euros. However, the tank of the car turned out to only hold 35 liters. At a price of just under 1.50 Euros per liter even a complete fill up would have been cheaper at the gas station. Since you never totally empty the tank before filling up the bill would more likely have been around 45 Euros. Although we are only talking a few Euros here, I feel ripped off by this tactic. Secondly I made the reservation with my US$ credit card and used that card for the rental pointing out to pay in US$. However, the agent didn't care or failed to notice. Instead the rental contract stated in the fine print that I would be billed in CAD (since my home address is Canadian). So I ended up to have two conversions at very unfavorable rates in my bill. First from EUR to CAD and then from CAD to US$. When I complained about the billing method (after receiving my credit card statement) the AVIS desk lady did not even hear me out and became pretty rude. If I were not comfortable with their standard procedures I should rent with a different company next time. Well, that's exactly what I am going to do and I can only recommend to others to do the same. read more

They use that to entice people to buy, but then give you lower quality "or similar" cars, which are not at all comparable to Mercedes. Someone should sue them for this. Excellent customer service at the desk (yes, English language friendly) and I didn't have to deal with another person when I got into the car...I just found my car and drove off...easy breezy. Get the pocket wifi....it's worth it if you have a smart phone that doesn't have cell service in Europe. It is as good as having cell service with very good reception at about $8/day (no you still can't make calls that requires tower service). It saved me tons of money in the hotel that charges $25/day WIRED internet access. I think not. read more

I returned a car here a couple years ago, but it's sad to see nothing has changed. Upon returning the car, the guy spent an inordinate amount of time looking at the car, trying to find a scratch. He was obviously looking for a bribe. After it was clear it wasn't coming, he had to look under the front bumper to find a scratch the size of a grain of rice, and boom, $400 charge. They know that foreigners returning cars have no realistic recourse, so they gouge you. Don't use Avis. read more

Pure scam, they trick you with decent rental rates but then rip you off with "damages" on the return. You collect the car in a semi-dark underground garage (with no assistant) so that spotting small scratches or dents is quasi impossible (do they expect you to bring a torch?). I returned the car the next day, convinced it was in the same condition as when collected. When you return it, you would think you are entering an operating theatre, that is how bright it is. Assistant goes over the car with a magnifying glass. Informed me that there was a little dent in the windscreen. When I first looked, it thought it was a dirt spot, but when I put my finger over it, I could feel a tiny indent, not bigger than 1mm. Assistant told me that would cost EUR 213.85; just a random number coming out from "the system". When I informed the assistant I did not agree with that, he had me fill in an "accident statement" which I did, noting my disagreement, and signed. Do not have a clue what for because clearly no one has had another look at it. Assistant also informed me that he had made a note in "the system" that I did not agree with the charge (which he showed me) and then informed me that he needed to do this "so that they could inform the next customer /user" of this dent, HENCE they clearly had NO intention of repairing it, and did not think it was needing a repair! I can assure anyone that if you would take this dent to Carglass, they would perhaps charge you a minimal charge of EUR20-25 (just in case they would think it would even merit a repair). Two days later, I got the "Rechnung" per e-mail, with the EUR 213.85 charge on it, no mention of my disagreement, etc. so I contacted Avis Customer service via e-mail, got a "Ticket number" (TKT 004850139)and a promise that they would contact me within max. 10 days; result: dead silence! After a week, I got a letter from Avis with a paper copy of my "Abrechnung" and another "accident statement" form, with an e-mail address for any assistance. Did send a mail to them (Abrechnung.Selbstbeteiligung@avis.de), but after weeks, the result is still "dead silence". Have made one further attempt, sending a mail to their general Customer Services number which is apparently in the US; at least they responded but indicating that this should be handled by their German colleagues, so they had forwarded my message for further action; result: INaction! (perhaps other than the staff at the FraPort counter, they do not understand English) Going by the reviews that I have now seen, I am convinced that this is an Avis Germany malpractice of enticing customers with fairly low rates but "making up" for it by unreal, not substantiated bogus charges for claimed damages. As disgusted as many other reviewers. Only advice: go somewhere else when considering renting a car in Germany. read more

"I have just returned from an emergency trip to Germany where I had to use a rental car from Budget Frankfurt which I pre-ordered through Auto Europe. My experience with Budget was more than inadequate. I booked a small car from Budget for pick-up at 7.30 at 451.53€ (according to my voucher, which Budget did NOT honour). Budget said my car had not arrived from previous rentee (which means that they had prior knowledge of my booking) and I must either wait for however long it took (and they gave no estimate) OR as they only had 2 other cars available I would have to take one of those. However, they told me I would have to pay an extra 220€ (for whichever car I chose). On occasions like this, other rental companies have given me their next available car for the already paid amount. NOT so Budget!! As I was desperate (a parent was dying and I had to get there as fast as possible), I paid the requested amount. For that reason I was NOT at all in a position to argue anything and had to go for the higher cost of one of the replacement cars for which Budget then made out a new contract with totally different and obvious higher costs. On top of this, when I returned the car, with a full tank, Budget charged me "additional costs: Fuel 70.17€ and 198€ of Additional Products**: included UPLx9 = what does this mean anyway?"- since an explanation of this does not show up anywhere in Budget's own documentation. Something else to hide?. Their total in the "Voraussichtliche Mietkosten" now came to 755.60€, which is an increase of 65% over the original agreed price!!! If you want to get ripped off go Budget! I wrote emails and snail mail to Avis-Budget customercare (which is a total misnomer), and included copy to their CEO, detailing my complaint and giving them more than one week to respond before I went public. Unfortunately they hide their identities very well and they have not bothered to answer at all so I am now going public. If only there were zero stars. I did the PRE PAY, checked every box for insurance and guess what. I got charged 255.00 more . I didnt notice this on a detailed print out after a LONG conversation with a woman who spoke great English. I told her we DO NOT want any more insurance. What is the point of pre- pay if they charge you more? We had a 9 passenger Van.( Visa will cover you up to an 8 passenger van. STAY AWAY! The car was supposed to have GPS built in but had no GPS. Drove back to rental car returns, took elevator and long walk back to rental counter. Was given a TomTOM. Returned to car, drove out of building to get a signal. The TomTom did not hold a charge even when plugged in. Again drove to Rental Car Returns, another 10 to 15 minutes to get to agent at counter. This time given another car with built in GPS that worked, and they had a lot attendant drive the new aacr to the first one so we could transfer our luggage. All this idiocy waste TWO HOURS of our meticulously planned one day visit to ancestral cemeteries so we had to omit part of our trip. At east they waived a part ( not all) of the charges and apologized. To add insult to injury, when I returned the car, the attendant practically had her nose against the car trying to find some damage to charge me , an obvious US tourist, for. She claimed a cover was missing from where the rear wiper is bolted to the car. When I loudly and angrily protested, she asked a supervisor who waved his hand in dismissal.
