Do not rent from AVIS O'Hare Airport! They gave me a dirty car that smelled like an ashtray. I did not realize the car smelled like cigarette smoke until it sat in the sun with the windows closed. I was not compensated enough for the frustration and run around with customer service. I was misled at the counter when I picked up the dirty car. There are charges, taxes and fees they do not disclose. When I dropped it off I was told they would not charge me a cleaning fee for the cigarette smoke (How very generous of them). Horrible at resolving issues. Had car broken into in Rome. They took the broken car quick, but i could not connect with anyone to get a replacement car. Finally, took taxi to the international airport in Rome to get a car - which i only got after a lot of arguing. Then they charged me extra after i got back (even though i had bought all the insurance, including glass, roadside and any excess CDW) with Avis directly. Now, it has been about 2 months, and I am still trying to get my money back and they keep saying that they have contacted their Italy division, but no updates of any kind! When needing to adjust my rental agreement by adding an additional day to my rental, the young man on the phone was as rude as anyone I've ever heard. He refused to help me without the account "Pin Number" that I didn't have as I wasn't the one who booked the rental. I even told him that I was more then willing to pay for the extra day and yet he still refused to let me do that. Unbelievable!!! I and my family have always ensured that we keep the vehicle (our own or anyone else's) clean and accident-free. First time in my life, my concern was that I was billed an unauthorized cleaning fee that was charged to my credit card by Avis. I rented a car from Avis on August 22, 2023 at the Long Beach airport location. I returned the car to the LAX location on August 24. When I dropped off the car, the clerk did not mention anything about the car being dirty, as there is nothing to be concerned about. A week later, I received a letter from Avis stating that I was being charged a USD125 cleaning fee. I called Avis to dispute the charge. They lady told me that she'll send photos of the mess in the car. I did not receive an email with the pictures. I asked to speak to a supervisor, who told me that the fee was for cleaning the car. I explained that the car was not dirty when I returned it, and that the receiving clerk did not mention anything about the car being dirty. The supervisor said that he would waive the fee, but I later received a letter stating that the fee was still being charged. I am very disappointed with Avis's handling of this situation. I recently rented a truck at the airport Avis in Chicago. After having the car literally 21 hours, and driving a total of 94 miles, I returned the car, they said they would email the receipt, and I was on my way. When I got the airport, I saw a charge pop up on my Mastercard for over $4,186. Shocked, I immediately called customer service and talked through it with the customer service agent. He said he submitted a case and that the charge should just drop off from being pending. Two days later, the charge posted, and I've been calling for over a week to get this refund. What makes this even more frustrating is that every time I call, someone who is definitely from another country just says sorry, they can't help. Like a broken record, no-one else I can talk to or anything? They answer no, Then hang up. One time I did manage to speak to a supervisor and it was the same story. Sorry, I can't help you. I ask if there is anyone I can talk to to help resolve it. No, no-one else can help you, I'm sorry. I mean seriously? It's almost comical at this point, except the fact that I'm trying to get back over $4,000. They literally said I drove over 14,000 miles in 21 hours. For context, I would have needed to drive 667 miles per hour for 21 straight hours without stopping for gas. So what I'm struggling to understand is how there is not someone in a position that can see that this is a mistake and issue the refund. Are they that thick? Honestly this blows my mind. Was stuck using Avis as a last resort when a flight got cancelled and I needed to get home. Rented a car from O'Hare to drive 2 and a half hours to Kalamazoo (171 miles), cost me $410 and then they tried to charge me for fuel when I topped it off before dropping it at Kalamazoo and had receipt plus picture of fuel gauge. Look up the board for the space where the car was park. Walk around the car check for damage. Then drive to the checkout booth to get the contract of the rental. It is easy and quick. Since I like their car, no change is needed. This rental is actually offsite rental car facility from airport. The shuttle bus will take you and drop back to airport for free. This place is a disgrace! I'm an airline pilot and a non-smoker. I arrived at the Avis Preferred desk and was 'welcomed' by a rude employee behind the front desk. I rented a car for the day and upon entering the vehicle there was a slight smokey smell but not enough to complain. Today, I received a letter stating that due to smoke, I owe a total of $450 in damages - and today my credit card charged for this amount. I will fight these charges. As a loyalty member, why was there no contact from them questioning me about this? I cannot believe I've been treated like this. I have indicated my rental information in this review in case, Avis would like to resolve this as they have not attempted to do so at all after multiple attempts. We made a reservation by Avis 6 months in advance of our trip to Antigua. Upon arrival at V.C Bird Airport we were given by Avis's representative a very old and ran down Toyota Corolla with lots of scratches and damages on it and 77300 miles on it. We had to carefully documents everything as I had read that the local rental companies will give you cars that have this type of issues and then will try to get money out of customers for it, but what I did not know that Avis (a reputable rental company) will give you an unsafe car that you should not be renting for the road! This is apparently one way of having additional income for them. As I asked for a different car, I was told that this is the only car, take or leave it, as there are other people, who would rent it if you do not want it. I was shocked to hear that. I informed the lady at the counter that I had a reservation 6 months in advance and that did not seem to bother her, and she did not care at all. I saw myself forced to either take this lemon (not knowing that it is also unsafe for the roads in addition to other damages that were visible at the time of rental). Very unfriendly and not customer service oriented at all! After we drove it into the City, I heard something flapping and as I got off the car, I saw that the front bumper keeps popping out and the rear bumper had exactly the same issue too. Long story short, as we were there for only a few days I tried to keep the positive attitude and enjoy our trip and I did not return the car to not ruin our vacation and did not drive it much in order to avoid any potential issues for us and returned it to the Airport at the end of our visit and came back home and sent Avis Canada the photos of the lemon that we were given and explained to them our issue, hoping that they will try to at least reimbuse the money and apologize for ruining their reputations for me. Their answer after one month was, that I have to speak with the local representative. Are you kidding me??? The local rep did not care about me and my family as I was there and did not disclose to me that the car is unsafe to drive and the bumper at any time can pop out the car and that would put me as a tourist in risks of paying penalty or creating an accident. Now I must spend more money from my pocket and time and pay for long-distance rate to speak to those people again, who created this issue for me? They for sure will not take care of this issue as they already have charged my credit card and the issue for them is closed. I am very disappointed in the dishonesty of Avis's representative in Antigua and in Avis doing this to their international customers. This is a REAL post. I've called several Avis locations trying to replace the nasty vehicle I was given. It rings a few times then goes to the Avis automated line. So I finally speak to someone just now, and he tells me the same numbers I've been calling is all he has. He literally told me he's in Mexico, while I'm in the Midwest. That's an issue. My bigger issue is being given a dirty car. And the associate who helped me at Ohare Airport. How do you clean a car and hand prints are on the roof of the car? I am an Avis preferred customer for several years and usually have good results when working with them; not now. I rented a car from the Atlanta airport on 2/19/25 for a one day rental. When I returned the car, I left the key fob in the cupholder, however when I arrived home, I found out I left my personal key fob in the rental car and accidently kept the rental car fob. I went to FedEx the next morning and returned the keys using overnight service; they signed for the package so I know they received it. However, they have been TOTALLY UNRESPONSIVE in my search to find my key fob. I filled out a lost and found and submitted 3 emails to their customer service; I can't even get a response. When I spoke to their customer service reps (at least 4 of them), they tell me they can't help me but to call the Avis at the airport direct. I've called them multiple times, but cannot get a human on the phone until it directs me back to their customer service group. I am so disappointed in them. I realize this all started due to my own fault, but their customer service is TERRIBLE. read more

Two weeks later I received notification from Avis that I had been charged a $450 cleaning fee "due to the presence of smoke smell". I have never smoked in my life. They don't really clean the cars. They still have trash from previous rentals, candy in the seats (like chocolate candy in the drivers seat, water bottles rolling around in the floor boards, windshields have not been cleaned or were just sprayed and had not been cleaned (I had to immediately find a gas station to scrub down the inside windshield as I could hardly see). They don't make sure the cars are full of gas. I received my last rental and it had less than half a tank and witnessed another guy come complain because his car was below the E mark. There are too many staff members who are rude and will scream at you as I experienced this morning when a woman while returning was screaming at me. Short answer: If you do get stuck using Avis just take care. Don't waste time on quickpass for this location and make the desk agent print the contract at the desk or actually record them stating what was agreed and what was declined. Not doing this cost me $47. Long answer with detail: I spent 10 minutes filling out the online ID check to get "quickpass" which then supposedly was just show ID and payment card and pick up car. Arriving to the rental car facility there was no "quickpass" sign and a long line queuing for 1 desk agent. I went out to the garage to check if there was "quickpass" out there but there was a longer line there for 2 desk agents. Went back inside and after 30 min wait got to the desk. Declined everything and was told to sign on the digital screen which normally I find fine but learned my lesson this time. After the whole process which was about 40 minutes I got my car allocated with comment that to exit the facility I would need the bar code in the email with the contract that "should have already arrived by time I got to garage". Upon getting into car first thing to notice was 3/4 tank of fuel versus full, and of course no email with contract and bar code. When I got to exit gate the agent there was polite and seemed to not be surprised I didn't have code. He did note the less than full fuel but also warned to still fill the tank as otherwise they would charge me regardless. Upon returning the car (with fuel full so already $20 down on the rental) I saw an extra $47 charge which I originally thought was fuel but was notified by customer support that I had purchased the daily roadside maintenance charge. Needless to say I am livid but this is my error as the charge was on the contract when I checked (which arrived via email 10 minutes after leaving the garage so I had never reviewed, again my mistake). I do have to say customer support is responsive and did credit part of the charge but relatively uncaring about the actions of the desk agent on slipping charge in when declined and completely uncaring about the less than full fuel on pick up. Edit: I did contact Avis support directly after the rental and did receive timely response, I did not have much luck with my case however thus why this review. That said when reaching out via Twitter I also received a quick response and after a bit of back and forth was able to get my issues resolved to my satisfaction. I am raising by a star for that reason but also leaving it low due to the fact those steps for resolution should not have been required. read more

Was told that if I returned the car at the same location, with full tank and no damage the charges would not exceed my pre-paid amount.
