Avellinos is a very nice place nestle in the heart of Blacksburg. I ordered Nonna's Special Fagoli and it was delicious and I also got a salad (house with ranch). The bread with olive oil and seasonings is very good!! They always offer great service even during high traffic hours. There is parking directly out front as well. The service was excellent, but the excellence stopped there! I had lunch with a friend on a Sunday. It wasn't crowded. My friend ordered a spaghetti that was advertised as seafood. He wondered where the seafood was because there was none visible! I ordered ravioli. It might have been ok without the sauce. I put half in a box to take to a friend. She threw it out but didn't want to tell me. I paid $50 and felt terrible because my friend is truly a starving student. We were in a section by ourselves and had a good talk. What a meal I had tonight at Avellinos. The veal was absolutely fantastic. I sat at the bar and had Anna take care of me. She was absolutely amazing. Super friendly, great recommendations, and she went above and beyond with creating some delicious mocktails. So major thanks to her for making my first Avellinos experience awesome. I gave Avellino's a try today for the first time. I tried the Italian combo and pizza. The food was pretty good. The service was prompt and friendly. The atmosphere was relaxed and quiet. The cost wasn't bad, it averages about $20 a person. read more

By far the best pizza in Blacksburg, pretty good pasta and garlic bread too. If you're gonna get food from here though, definitely get takeout, because the service is actual trash. I've eaten in the restaurant several times and i'm always waiting ages to be served, i'm getting the wrong people's food, servers forgetting about requests for refills or sauces or more bread, but the food is always great. I'd say for the pizza, the crust is definitely more on the soft side though, so if you like it more crispy then make sure to ask them to cook it a bit longer, I usually just ask for it "well done". I will remember my lunch for a long time and always eat here when visiting Blacksburg! Stopped at Avellinos for a quick bite after moving my son into his VT dorm. Pretty much chose this place because it is across the street from the car wash (Jet Express) and figured it would be fast. My expectations were admittedly low from the looks of the entrance. I don't take photos of my food...feels weird to do so but I snapped away at my Avellinos Salad to show my husband. It was beautiful! I don't even normally order this type of dish and was blown away! Large portion and filled with so many ingredients like fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, artichoke hearts... The house vinaigrette paired perfectly. This salad was seriously one of the best I've ever had. My son had the lasagna and he said it was equally delicious. My family has ordered from Avellinos a lot when we come to town -- the kids always like the large NY Style pizza slices and the range of options for adults is great too. This holiday weekend, I tried a calzone and garlic knots which were delicious. The men folks ordered wings that they raved about, and we managed to eat on some of the pasta dishes for several days. My only beef was the lack of a kids menu -- we were able to appease them all with pizza and sharing with adults, but it would have been nice! We had an excellent experience last night at Avellino's. The food was absolutely delicious. We each had a pasta dish : Carbonara, Josephina and Bolognese. Our server, Sophie was so friendly and attentive. She was awesome! It was a busy Friday night and we were seated within 15 minutes of arriving at 6 pm with no reservation. The manager was friendly and accommodating because we had an our dog with us and it was raining and we couldn't sit on the patio. He put us at a corner table which was perfect for our dog to lie down. We will definitely be back! Everyone was so nice and the food was absolutely delicious! read more

Came here for a quick dinner last night and had a good time! Lots of seating available so we had a table immediately. Service was great. We got the Sauvignon Blanc wine which tasted amazing. We're dumb. McDreamy and I brought his parents to Avellinos at 6pm on the Saturday of VTech graduation weekend. 'Who'll be eating out?," we asked. "Everyone will be at their grad parties," we replied to ourselves. Wrong! Everyone who knew Avellinos knew to make reservations. By some miracle of all miracles, though, the saint of a host, a man with more patience than anyone I've every witnessed, managed to find us a table after only a thirty minute wait. Yay! Let me begin with the table service. Jeff, who apparently normally works as the bartender, was our waiter. He is witty, personable, attentive, and brought some additional levity and joy to our family dinner. He recommended a Jeff's Old Fashion for McDreamy that received rave reviews when served. Our other drinks (a bottle of Chianti and a glass of Prosecco) and bread were served quickly. Our orders were taken promptly but without it feeling rushed. Jeff later recommended the in-house made tiramisu; it was amazingly light and so delicious, if I may skip ahead. Now for the food. The food! Three of the four of us hail from Italian families. The fourth married into one five decades ago. So she's an honorary Italian American. We are VERY picky when it comes to our food and we frankly chose Avellinos because we were starving and they served pizza, which is hard albeit not impossible to mess up. The menu arrived and the size and extent of it made me trepidatious. Could anything be good if they serve so much? It was all Italian American style fare, perhaps the answer is yes? Hint: the answer is definitely yes! I chose the sausage and peppers over pappardelle with a Caesar salad. McDreamy ordered his go-to chicken parmigiana over spaghetti. The parents each ordered a 12" pizzas. Oh! We also asked to start the meal with a dish of antipasto. Words to describe our meal include delectable, authentic, fresh, perfectly seasoned, just-like-homemade, tasty, tasty, tasty, and I'd-like-more-please. Avellinos serves some of the best Italian American food that I've ever had outside of family events. It's hands down that simple. I'm so sad that we didn't find the restaurant during previous trips to Blacksburg. It would have most certainly been our go-to place. Some words of wisdom, if I may - make a reservation on busy university weekends. Otherwise, you may not get to experience this terrific restaurant. But absolutely try Avellinos. Charming atmosphere and nice service. Unfortunately if you are from the New York/ New Jersey area you would not consider this Italian food. Pepperoni does not belong in pasta fagoli soup. Chicken Francese is not breaded. The red sauce is not edible. The Penne Vodka is more like a cross of Mac and cheese and penne vodka. Mushrooms do not belong in penne vodka. The tossed salad consisted of cold large leaves with two tasteless tomatoes and a slice of red onion shoved in a bowl. read more

The host was very friendly, and accommodating. But we had to wait 30 minutes, which was surprising because there were several open tables. Once seated, our waitress approached us with obvious distain. It was if our presence offended her, and we were an inconvenience. No niceties were exchanged. She took our drink order and disappeared. Eventually, my husband received the wrong beer, and my sangria was lukewarm. But asking our waitress for ice seemed ill advised, as her overall demeanor led us to believe she didn't like her job, and cared even less about our wellbeing. Every drink and food item was slammed on the table. The waitress' attitude failed to improve despite attempts at conversation. The food was decent, although the piccata was overly peppered. I doubt we will be back. As a former Blacksburg waitress for many years, I know you can have bad nights but as we walked out we saw said waitress laughing it up with her peers. The atmosphere and menu are impressive but the food needs work. There were plenty of staff but most young college kids. The fried calamari was good. The Caprese app was ok. While it was February, their tomatoes could have been higher quality. I had the spinach and arugula salad and it was good but basic. The Verdura was a giant portion but way salty. Hard to eat salty. I almost sent it back but we were already there close to closing and I was with guests who needed to go. I rarely write reviews, but I had to write one after eating at Avellinos. I was visiting Blacksburg and had just recovered my smell & taste after a bout with Covid. I was craving a nice Italian meal and was intrigued by the online reviews. Avellinos was about 15 minutes away from where I was staying, but something told me to make the trip and I'm really glad I did. I ate lunch there at 2:00 on a Thursday afternoon. The restaurant is really cute and inviting inside and the person who seated me was very nice. I immediately felt welcome there. The first thing I noticed was that the restaurant was still at least half full at 2:00 in the afternoon. I sat near a table of people who spoke fluent Italian the entire meal and they were obviously enjoying their food and the atmosphere. There were lots of businesspeople wearing suits & ties in there as well as students and other people dressed casually like me. Music from Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Louis Prima was playing in the background. My server, Krissy, was the best server I have had in a long time. She was very friendly and attentive and she made my experience there a real joy. She told me she had moved here from New Jersey and that she knows authentic Italian food. She told me that all of Avellinos' food and sauces are prepared in house and that they could accommodate dietary restrictions. She promised I would love the meal and said the food is so good that it sometimes gives her chills! I thought that was really funny but she was actually right. She also told me that people tend to have long, relaxed meals there, especially on their patio during nice weather. I have never been to Italy, but I lived in France and it reminded me of cafes in Paris where people sit for a few hours enjoying a nice bottle of wine, excellent food, and good conversation. The first thing Krissy brought me was this amazing bread that is hard to describe. It is nice, thickly sliced Italian bread. I can't do it justice, but it is really crispy on the outside and soft and warm in the middle. The bread is totally addictive and I feel sorry for anyone who is gluten free and can't eat it. I'm embarrassed to say that I ate the entire loaf very quickly and ordered some more. I had a Capresa salad and a cup of homemade chicken soup as appetizers. Tomatoes were not even in season at the time, but the salad was delicious. Ditto for the soup, which was obviously homemade and a real treat. My main course was simple cheese ravioli made in a vodka sauce and it was really, really good. I finished my gigantic lunch off with a slice of limoncello cake, which was also quite memorable. I literally enjoyed every bite of food I ate there. There's an old country expression I love when food is really good: you tell the cook that they "put their foot in it." Not sure the origin of that expression, but it is a big compliment when someone tells the cook that they put their foot in it. haha. So anyway, the chef at Avellino's clearly put their foot in my entire meal today! I eat out a lot, and lunches can often be uninspiring or an afterthought for the staff. Not this one. Really well done in a friendly, casual, welcoming atmosphere. A review I read on here called this restaurant a gem, and I wholeheartedly agree with that. Avellinos is my new favorite restaurant in Bburg and I definitely recommend it. For the life of me, I can't understand the glowing reviews for this restaurant. I live within walking distance and believe me, I wish it were as good as the reviews would make one think. I've been there with friends several times in the last couple of years, so this review isn't for one visit. I keep hoping to have a better experience, but it never happens. I know we don't have a lot of good restaurant options in Blacksburg, but there are many better than this one. Firstly, the service, though friendly, is not professional at all. There are many simple things that are forgotten, or the wrong food is put in front of the wrong diner. The wine glasses are often spotty, and the pours are all over the place. And wait times, once seated can be long. As for the food, what decent Italian restaurant can't make eggplant? I love eggplant, and it's hard not to please me with an eggplant dish, but Avellinos manages to disappoint me every time. The eggplant is cut too thick and not cooked long enough. This is true whether it is in eggplant parm or on a pizza. And the pizza is just not that great. The crust is tough and the toppings spare. The red sauce needs work. It doesn't have that depth that one would expect, and everything is too garlicky, and I like garlic. Anyway, I really wish Avellinos would get its act together. But I guess in this town without much competition, a mediocre place can continue to operate. read more

Love eating Avellinos when Im In town!! I have never eaten in but always ordered take-out. I enjoy their food because everything that Ive had here is so flavorful. Do not snooze on their caesar salad! The Caesar salad has the RIGHT amount of dressing and is delicious.
