Avedano's is new on the scene at Off the Grid's Sunday Presidio Picnic. While the lines are short, take advantage of the best pressed sandwiches and deli salads on offer at Off the Grid. Their meats are local and ethically sourced, their side salads have old world legitimacy, AND everything I tried was delicious. In fact, the Caponata salad and Reuben sandwich were among the best things I've ever tried at Off the Grid.
I fully intended to eat lunch elsewhere, but I was lured in with a sample of the Reuben panini ($13). The pastrami was excellent, the bread was the perfect thickness and crispness, and the sauerkraut really popped. I decided to try a Cuban sandwich ($13). The pork was moist and well-seasoned, and the bread was as good as before. I always wish for more pickles and this was no exception, but there were enough pickles to give a pleasant tang. I did ask if I could swap sauces and was unable to; part of the food-truck-event prep is pre-assembling the sandwiches so they're ready to go in the sandwich press, which is understandable. I was also offered a sample of the Caponata salad ($6). This was actually the highlight for me: sliced olives, capers, pickled eggplant, tomatoes, and onions tossed in vinegar and oil? Yes please!
I know Avedano's is doing Off the Grid events while their market is remodeled, and I hope they continue these events into the future. read more
