Almost a year I've been a monthly regular at Avanti. I absolutely love this place.... I always see George - from long and blonde hi lights to going short black and layered, any style, color and cut has been beyond perfect. I've been to different salons in the past and never received compliments from friends and family the way I do now. Understandably their schedules are full of appointments, the girls and George always are able to work you in during the week to accommodate. During the past year my visits are always the same consistently- arrive and greeted by all with a hello and smile, offered coffee and snacks. I honestly can say every appointment I have I'm seated to start and do not wait. From color to wash, cut to blow. I believe they manage their schedules well and this pleases me to not wait for an appointment. Again I strongly recommend giving Avanti a try. I will go as far as to say that this was the least satisfying haircut of my life. Last June, I was feeling a bit impulsive, bored with my hair and all swept up in the craze of the Victoria Beckham bob. Coincidentally, this was also around the time that my mother decided she and I didn't spend enough quality time together. Not being one to argue against a free haircut, I allowed her to convince me into going to Avanti with her. I figured, "hey, if she loves the place so much..." No. Wrong. So wrong. At this point I should mention that my mother and I have very different hair types. She has fine, wavy and easily manageable hair. My hair is best described as a mane- curly, poofy and, much like a lion, requires to be tranquilized before it can be brought into contact with human beings. I should have known better, I really should have. In hindsight, I was probably hoping that the stylist would talk me out of the Beckham bob and create something truly flattering for my hair type. Definitely the wrong place to go for a style consultation, much less for some friendly conversation during, what will from now on be referred to as, the procedure. Nary a smile was spared. There is a very slippery slope that starts at detached professionalism, steadily declines into pretension, and further, rudeness. Avanti has successfully managed to snowball down that slope. As if the sleek, modern interior of the salon gives the employees a license for an attitude? Hello? Must I remind you that we're in Staten Island, of all places? When I was called to get my hair washed, the woman all but rolled her eyes when I asked where it was I had to go. Oh, behind that thing, there? I didn't realize that vague hand gestures took so much effort to repeat. The procedure itself took only a short while. The stylist asked me what I wanted, nodded and got to work. With most things, I'm all for a no-frills approach if it gets the job done but this is a woman's HAIR we're talking about. Needless to say, I looked great once I left the salon, however after the first wash it all went to hell. I was left with a short puff-ball that I had to beat into submission daily. Sigh. The only reason this isn't a one-star review is because I honestly blame myself for the bad decision. read more

I got a haircut here and just asked for a trim. The girl totally misunderstood my directions and gave me an uneven bob. She cut HALF the back of my hair off when i asked for no more than an inch off ??? There are some pieces that are three inches long in random places... I should have known going here that I would get pretentious attitudes and fake Staten Island employees. I went in for highlights, assuming that an expensive place like this could be trusted. They threw me to a girl that probably got her Paul Mitchell license down the block about 2 weeks before. A request for touching up roots of highlights meant turning my entire head of hair bleach blonde. It looked fake, trashy, and cheap. I had to really go home, wash it out multiple times, and stare a little longer to realize what a terrible job she did. After calling to complain, I was told to come in free of charge on a night when the original girl Samantha wasn't going to be there...GREAT! I just want to look normal. WELL, surprise to me, the same girl was in, and that is who I was scheduled with. WHAT?!?!? Ruin my hair, and then bring me back for more. Perfect. Well, she attempted to fix it and gave me a snotty attitude the entire time after I was actually nice to her. Never ever again. I don't need to throw money out, look awful, and pay a snotty girl with no brains for services that are not professional. read more

I have been here several times but the last two visits were horrible. The first time, the lady wanted to get to the next appointment that she didn't cut my hair properly. I came back the next day and got it fixed from George. He wasn't bad but he wasn't very social and just did his job. The second time I went, the lady spent the entire time talking about how bad and dead my hair was. I understand saying it once but no need to continue saying it through your the haircut as well as after!!! I went to Avanti's because I heard it was supposed to be the best and it was my son's wedding...it was a HORROR! I wanted my hair colored as blonde on blonde, what I got was HORRIBLE and I went to the wedding almost in tears.....my hair had patches and patches of brown hair and when I went to have it combed out in Makeovers, the woman tried as best she could to hide the brown patches...I called Avanti's, spoke to Posha, she told me there was only a 7 day make-over and I had to come at their convenience....I didn't even bother going.....HORRIBLE place, cost me $204. to have my hair ruined! read more

Just got back from having Katie color my botched at home dye job. She is absolutely AMAZING! I had brass blonde hair that needed to be lightened to ash blonde. She took the time to explain what she was going to do and the results were exactly what I wanted. She's an amazing colorist and I highly recommend her to anything wanting to fix their color or change it. She also suggested where I can get color to touch up my roots myself. Such a plus!! I found Jessica on 201's Best of Bergen after my stylist retired to Greece. Until I discovered my former stylist, I never had found anyone that cut my hair so that it always looked good with a minimal amount of work, i.e. the cut was perfect. I really didn't think I would find someone as good as my former stylist, but now after having had Jessica cut my hair for over a year, I have discovered she is better than my former stylist. What prompted me to write this review is that I washed my hair yesterday in my daughter's house and she did not have any conditioner. I let it dry naturally, but it looked very "flat". BUT when I woke up this morning and combed my hair, it looked fabulous! I do have very good hair, but until I found my previous stylist, I was never able to wash my hair without blow drying it and that is why I loved him; but Jessica's cuts allow me to wash and air dry my hair and it even looks better than it ever has. read more

I have been getting my hair done by George for over a year now! He is the best! Always recommended by others!!! I love George because he just makes you feel so comfortable. I used to always get nervous when I would get my hair done. George does exactly what I want and I love his suggestions! I got to my appointment early so I decided to get a manicure. I was a little hesitant because I think $11 for a manicure is a lot. But, it was worth very penny! My nails JUST got a tiny chip after an entire week! It is very important to me to always have my nails done and for my nails to last that long amazed me! Lana did an incredible job! I will only get my manicures done at Avanti from now on! The first time I booked a haircut appointment here, I was shocked when my hair dresser told me she had no time to dry my hair because I didn't make an appointment for that. Since when does a haircut not include a blow dry? And when I said I was upset with that instead of apologizing I was treated rudely like it was my problem not theirs. The staff here is rude and in a rush. And they think a haircut means wash and cut and send you home with a wet head. I do not recommend this salon. read more

You need to know the truth, and here it is, this salon DESTROYED my hair. Not only did they destroy my hair, but they refused to reimburse me for the mistakes they made. I want you to know that I am writing this review to help you and I don't want anyone else to have to experience what I did. Please do yourself a favor and go to a salon that is actually professional in their line of work. I had beautiful long brown hair, but I'd had it my whole life and wanted to try something new and different for a change, something that would make me feel incredibly sexy. So I decided to go blonde. When I called this salon to schedule the appointment I explained to the receptionist on the phone exactly what I wanted and the condition my hair was currently in. So on the day of the appointment I drove the half hour drive to this salon and spoke with the stylist. When I told her what I wanted she said she didn't have enough time to do what I wanted that day and that I would have to reschedule, AFTER I HAD ALREADY DRIVEN THERE?! I actually tried to just be polite and accommodating, so I agreed to reschedule. I also explained to her exactly what I wanted while I was there. I even told her I knew my hair was very dark and that it might take multiple sessions for me to get it as light as I wanted, but that I was okay with that. She said I didn't need multiple sessions though and that she could do it in one. The day she did my hair was one of the worst days of my life, and that is not an exaggeration. I got to the salon when it opened on the day of a snow storm. I was there on time, my stylist was over a half hour late. Then she started the process that would severely damage my hair. In her mind, her only goal was to get me as light as she could as fast as she could. She did not take into consideration the condition of my hair or what the process would do to it. She stripped my hair. These chemicals were left on for such a long time that the damage was irreparable. I had dry damaged over processed bleached hair. And since I'd had some highlights in my hair before she started this process, my roots were darker. So she bleached my roots. They were still darker than the rest of my hair. So she put more bleach on them. They were STILL darker. Then she put the weakest toner on it that she could because she didn't want to make my hair any darker. Finally, she blew it dry and spun me around to face the mirror. The result was scary. I could have been in a horror movie. My hair was yellow with bright orange roots. It was, as my friend said, blonde gone wrong! I thought she would offer to fix this for me or tell me that she didn't have time to finish so I needed to make another appointment to fix it. But they were closing now and she was in a hurry to get me out of there, so she charged me and rushed me out the door. Oh, and when she charged me, she told me the cost was going to be $550. The original estimate she gave me for all of this was $300. Yes, she charged me almost double her estimate. I walked to my car in 3 feet of snow through the parking lot, locked myself in it, and just started crying. I never cry in public, but this was just too much. The experience was actually so traumatic that I had gone into shock and started having an anxiety attack. The next day I called the salon and asked to speak with the manager. Long story short, this went back and forth for a while. I kept trying to get a hold of the manager but she "conveniently" was never there when I called. I said I wanted to meet with her in person about this so I could really explain what happened. The manager finally called me and left me a nasty message telling me she couldn't give me my money back because I didn't give them a chance to fix my hair. I'm sorry, WHAT?! Why would I let the same salon that destroyed my hair even TOUCH it again?! I'm not a moron. I disputed the charges with my credit card company, reopening this case 3 times. Finally though, I just can't do it anymore. I'm so sick of it. I know I deserve my money back because I didn't get what I paid for and have had to spend hundreds of dollars on top of that trying to fix the damage they did to my hair. But I have come to terms with the fact that this salon is greedy and just wants to make as much money as possible. I have accepted the fact that this salon is never going to make things right with me. And that is why I'm writing this review, to make things right. You deserve to know the truth. You deserve to know that this salon is not on the customer's side and could care less about your satisfaction as long as they are getting $$ in their pocket. What's even more is you deserve to know that this salon doesn't care about the quality of their work and is perfectly fine over charging you and letting you walk out with a really bad and poorly done hair job. This was my first time at Avanti Salon and I was pleasantly pleased. After a year living in Staten Island I still hadn't found a stylist I was happy with, as I get very nervous about getting my hair cut (even for trims!). Diana was recommended to me by a friend and I am so relieved to say that I finally found my stylist! She is very good and layered my hair exactly how I like it. She is also very professional and supportive in offering great suggestions, I would definitely recommend her to anyone. The only issue I had with the salon is that they don't allow you to put a tip on the card. If I am happy with a professional's work, I want to be able to easily leave a tip as my appreciation. Thankfully, I had cash on me but I would like to see this as an option provided for clients and the stylists in the future at this salon. read more

Have always loved and admired this salon and the professional staff. Today was different however, I got a fast and sloppy chop job by a long haired blonde with the initial D. She was running behind so she tried to make up the time by rushing through my haircut. She cut my hair and parted it in a way I was not comfortable parting it and said I could fix it myself later but it's cut in such a way that it can't be fixed. It was done and over before I could even say anything. Her comment was that it's quicker this way. She asked me if it had to be blow dried or if it was ok the way it was. When I said I wanted it dried, she gave me a negative reaction but dried it quickly. Before I could get up from the chair she was gone to get the next client. Sadly I will be going elsewhere to get the chop repaired. read more

I really liked this place a lot for many many years, until changes occurred. For one, the Russian woman that did the waxing is no longer there, so they have the nail girl doing manicures, pedicures & waxing. They refuse to hire a separate person for waxing. As a result, you could wait 45 minutes to an hour past your manicure/pedicure appt in the summer because the Management is dumping on the manicure person to do the waxing. Granted, it's part of the manicurists fault for not setting ground rules & speaking up, but I have also seen the Dictator owner walking around barking orders like he's running the military, so I could understand why none of his employees would want to speak up - for fear of losing their job. I also was bumped a number of times for my appointment because a female restaurant owner on Staten Island patrons that place and they take her over any other scheduled appt and just move you without notice. It's rude & obnoxious how they treat people. I still go there for my haircuts - since I have spiral curly hair, it's very tricky to find someone that knows how to cut/layer curly hair. I really really like all of the maniure/pedicure women that work there - they are very nice, personable & do a great job. Unfortunately, I have to ask for a manicure person that is not responsible for waxing so that I can get out of there in under 2 hours. I also find that the non-russian woman who does the facials is very talkative, annoying, and really doesn't know what she is doing. I told her I had sensitive skin and to only use products tailored for that - and to go easy. When I got out of there my face was red and inflamed. When I got home I had to re-wash my face and put cold compresses on my face because she scrubbed my face with so many chemicals that I broke out and started to swell. I took a benedryl as a precaution - she obviously didn't heed my warnings. I've had facials at this place for years by the Russian woman without a problem. I'll probably be looking for a new place for mani's & pedi's. read more

After a year of dealing with damaged hair from another salon. Returning to Avanti after a few years. Stop going because I just could not get what I wanted. Thought I would return and see the owner. She needs to get over herself. I went in, made it 100% clear I was having problems with my hair. i ONLY wanted a root touch-up to my BLONDE hair that I walked in with and a hair cut. She tried to talk me into highlights. Once again, I had to make it clear that my hair was in a very delicate condition and only wanted a touch-up. After a long wait, she sends over some girl, that does not speak, starts applying color to my hair. After about 5 minutes, I INTRODUCE MYSELF. I tell her the color she is applying looks dark. She says no....it matches your color...it just looks that way. So, I guess i look stupid. I was left in the chair for a long, long time. Watching the staff huddle by the sink, eating whatever they could get their hands on or sitting behind me on the bench, under the dryers, with their faces implanted in their phones playing games. It is very clear that the owners of Avanti are old and tired and just waiting to retire. They just gave up on what once was an upscale salon. After a very long time, I was asked to go to the sink, had the color run through my hair. I was asked to sit, with my head in the sink, HOW HORRIBLY UNCOMFORTABLE, FOR ANOTHER 10 MINUTES. It must have been longer, the non-speaking girl, was actually stopped in her tracks by another employee and TOLD to rinse my hair, that the color was on much too long. I was then led to THE OWNERS CHAIR. MY HAIR RED. I told her. She proceeded to say in a very very loud voice "your hair is not red, i have been doing this for a very long time, do you think i dont know what I am talking about." I walking into this salon with blonde hair, very clearly asked for a root touch-up.. I now have red, an very undersireable color red head. How dare she say it is not red. What a nasty woman!!!!!! Avanti has gone downhill. Do not go to Avanti unless you do not care what you look like or how you get treated. I will never return. I cannot even believe I am on the computer writing this. I have never done this before. i am so upset and so tired of these things happening. Shame on Avanti. read more
