In an attempt to schedule an appointment the employee that answered the phone was beyond rude. The website says they specialize in curly hair. ubder services it says curly styling as a service provided. I said I'm calling to inquire about scheduling an appointment for styling. The lady didn't let me speak and said "what kind of hair do you have were really busy?" With a rude tone. I said I don't want to go today, I was wondering availabilit. Again interupting me, she says "what kind of hair do you have like what are we talking about here? You want a blow out like what?" Before I can answer she says "what do you want?" I hung up and said never mind. I travel from Rockland County to Brooklyn to get my hair done and was happy to see a curly salon nearby. It's a shame with limited Salons in the curly community I still have to travel 2 hours because Rapunzel's is beyond rude. read more

I was going to an event on a Saturday night and needed an appointment in the afternoon. I called to schedule a blowout and they didn't have any openings, so they offered to put me on the cancellation list. I was having a hard time getting an appointment anywhere on that day, so I gave her my info. I finally got an appointment at another salon but as it turned out they cancelled at 8am the day of the appointment because of the snow. Lo and behold, at around 1pm Rapunzel's called with a cancellation, would I like to come in? Absolutely! I was washed, conditioned and blown out and curled in under an hour- seriously! Both stylists were so friendly and accomodating. I'd asked for loose big curls and had a picture of what I wanted. My hair didn't look as I'd planned, but I loved it and got quite a few compliments on my pictures. Better yet, it held for the duration of the afternoon plus the evening, so I was very happy. Let me preface this that I don't get my haircut very often! I have long curly hair and I never blow dry it, so it doesn't get damaged easily. However, I know so few people that actually know how to cut curly hair, that I will only let Debbie at Rapunzel cut my hair these days! I also don't ever do anything fancy with it, so I only need a trim every now and then! I, like many others have gotten my fair share of bad haircuts. (Even one where I've walked out crying!) This little studio in a small shopping center is now the only place I go. Debbie cuts my curly hair dry, exactly how they train you to do with curly hair at Deva Curl. I like to get my hair done here because they are known for being curly hair experts (which is super hard to find!) Debbie took a lot of time on my hair (thank you Debbie!) but when I had to get it washed, they brushed my hair with a thin tooth BRUSH, without asking me. I thought the #1 rule for curly hair is to never brush it. I have not brushed my hair since I was 13 years old since it makes my hair flat, frizzes the curls, and kills my ends. Debbie could not properly finish up my hair and cut the shorter pieces I had wanted in the front since my hair looked nothing like it normally does post-wash. Having been a curly girl my entire life, I've experienced a myriad of wonderful, mediocre and flat out hideous haircuts. Needless to say I have major trust issues when it comes to hairdressers and salons. When my trusted hairdresser of many years suddenly left the salon she worked at without a trace, I looked to the Naturally Curly website for guidance. I chose to try Rapunzel as it had tons of great reviews and was close to work. I loved the small, no-glitz vibe that this place had. Made me feel comfortable and at home. Debbie was a pleasure to talk to throughout my appointment as was Wendy. Both of them gave me really great tips for working with my sometimes disobedient curls. I also got to try out all kinds of Deva products that I otherwise wouldn't have known about. I walked out with a fantastic haircut that I got tons of compliments on- all at a great price, too. I will absolutely return to Rapunzel in the future. If you've got curly or wavy hair, look no further. I went here to dye my hair and the bleach killed my hair. It literally turned my hair into straw. I had to cut it off because no matter what I tried, it was irreparable. Also, the deva products are too heavy for my hair and leave a waxy residue. I was not thrilled about the haircut either. I went to another salon that doesn't specialize in curly hair and thankfully I got a better cut. I don't plan on returning here. After using my hairstylist and friend since the 1980's, I decided to try a curly hair specialist. Wow! Was I pleasantly surprised what the difference was between a regular haircut and a Deva Cut. For years my friend would use thinning shears on my hair to tame it. Little did I know that I just wasn't getting the right cut and using the wrong products. Having lived abroad for a few years, my favorite hairstyle had grown out and been cut poorly a few times, so I'd been having trouble getting a cut I liked. I will have to say I don't like going into the Beauty Salon much because of the length of time I have to wait plus the long process of getting my hair done. I just moved from NYC and searched far and wide for a great stylist without much luck. Little did I know I would find an amazing one when I moved out of the city. Debbie is a Deva curl specialist and does a wonderful job of getting my very temperamental wavy hair to get a curl. She is also great at replicating a photo if you bring one, where most stylists look at a photo and then come up with their own mad idea of what that is; Debbie will tell you if it can be done or offer suggestions of what might work better for your hair texture. I have really curly hair. Like, REALLY curly. Not just sort of curly, or wavy... Crazy curly. I've only ever walked out of a salon with my hair curly 3x. The first time I cried. The second time was last year at an expensive salon in NY, and my hair looked good but my wallet hurt. The third time was today. And I'm smiling. :) Debbie is awesome. I went in with fried hair from overprocessing after a keratin treatment which was promised to just remove frizz and not my curls, however it dropped my hair into a frizzy mess and she brought my hair back enough for me to mange until the keartin wears off! I've been a few times. The first time was great, they were very attentive and friendly. My cut was very good (it's the first "deva cut" I'd ever had) and I was impressed, the curls hadn't looked this good in years. The second time they were still pretty friendly and the cut was very good. The third time, they were a bit busier than usual, and (though I had an appointment) I felt like I was being "accommodated", like they wished I wasn't there. I asked for something different than what I'd had before, and showed Debbie a photo of what I wanted. She talked about it, what made it different than what I had, and started to cut. They washed it, clipped it, and put me under the dryer (during this entire process, I didn't really feel welcome). When my hair dried, there was this awkward moment - in the past, I'd been brought over to stylists' chair again for a final touch up, this time there was someone already sitting there getting a cut and so I just kind of stood up, paid, and left. Again, it just felt weird......And then got home, looked at my hair, and saw it was the same cut I'd gotten the first two times, not different at all. There's another deva salon the same distance from my house in the opposite direction; I'll try that next time. read more
