Tricia has been my stylist for 12 years. I can't count the number of times that I have received compliments on my haircuts. I was even stopped on the street in San Francisco and asked who cut my hair! A few months ago, while on vacation in Maui, I went to a salon for a bang trim. The stylist commented, " Whoever does your highlights does a fantastic job." Always nice to be praised by a peer. I have fine, straight, mousy hair, but Tricia still makes it look good! This a fantastic, welcoming, clean salon with a wonderful ambiance. It is worth making an appointment at the salon even if you live out of town-you will leave happy with a new color, cut, etc. Jennifer Marks, my stylist of five years recently moved here and she is a brilliant and creative artist. Artist? Yeah. It takes a skilled eye to be able to mix a color based on a person's skin tone, eye color, eyebrows, etc. I've never said more than "maybe a bit of this and a bit 'o that" and she always mixes the exact color that I had imagined. In addition to being a skilled stylist Jen is a good friend to all of her clients and most of them confide in her. She never forgets the details and inquires after them after months of not visiting. So, I suppose I should write her a therapy review as well? The other stylists are all very talented and warm, but I cannot personally recommend them, so read other reviews. Don't come here unless you wanted to be verbally assaulted and man-handled by the owner, Roxie! Dropped in due to convenience after getting my waxing done next door and explained that I wanted some layering in the front (basically to accentuate the bangs), as I was interested in growing out my hair for the summer. Didn't know anything about this salon beforehand but figured layering of the bangs is pretty routine, hair 101 stuff -- what can go wrong? Well just about everything! From the start, the owner, Roxie, was disgruntle, rude, and arrogant that I had opted for a $20 bang trim and not their oh-so-amazing $60 haircut (thank god I didn't!). Should have taken the cue right there and then to find another salon. Her hairdresser, who was actually quite nice, cuts my hair for about three minutes, tries to give me front layers but it comes out jagged and uneven and not exactly what I had wanted. At that point, I was still willing and trying to work with her hairdresser to get the layers that I wanted. However, in the background, very distractingly, I can hear Roxie, who's working on another customer at the time, making rude remarks on how I didn't know what I was talking about and that I'm being cheap for not getting the full hair cut. Her hairdresser continues to work on my hair, I'm giving her more feedback, and then Roxie, herself, comes over without any notice to cut my bangs: "to show me how it's suppose to be." Not only does the layering comes out even worse, but Roxie pulls my hair roughly from one side to another while she cuts. At one point she even grab my head and forcefully centers it and yells at me to be still. At this point, I had enough and told her to stop cutting my hair and I vented to her everything that was wrong and unacceptable with this experience: 1) her manhandling of customers; 2) making snarky remarks about her customers in front of them to other people, 3) to not listen to what her customers want, and etc. Her response was to call me the B-word and for me to pay and get out of her salon. I told her I would be more than happy to leave but I shouldn't be expected to pay after being physically and verbally assaulted by her and the job was not done. But ended up paying anyways bc I don't believe in skipping out on my bill and I didn't want her hairdresser, who was a nice person, to pay for her crassness. On the way out, I told her again her behavior was inappropriate and that I felt attacked. She explained it's bc she's an alpha female. Honestly, with the way she acted she's nothing but a classless, alpha B****. I grew up in Davis and believe strongly in supporting the local businesses, but never in my life have I had a customer experience worse than this. Marjan is awesome! She is punctual, VERY accomodating to her client's schedules and a perfectionist. Marjan is very detailed as a hairstylist. She takes her time to make sure you feel completely satisfied with your haircut. She also does a fantastic job with color, highlights and Brazilian blowout. My hair has never looked better! This shop is definitely a go to spot, before any formal event of mine. From the courteous service, to the expert skills of Trinity, have me coming back for more. The hair care product choice is ideal for most hair types. Fast, friendly and certainly professional. Trinity is always happy and cheerful, whenever I come in. From my experience with other hair stylists, my hair is especially difficult to groom, and get even. Trinity is also expert with women's hair. My wife refuses to let anyone touch her head, except for Trinity. Trinity has colored and cut my wife's hair on numerous formal occasions. read more

I feel bad giving this review because the woman who did my hair was really sweet...but it looks like I cut my hair myself. Not only are the layers really choppy but they are also completely uneven, it's bad. She did the colour really well, I love the colour. Getting my hair cut there was horrendous experience as well, because the woman was so rough. She pulled my hair, scrubbed my head like she was trying scalp me. She also burned my head multiple times with the hair dryer. On top of this she hooked my freshly pierced ear several times and pulled quite hard. I went in for highlights, and with discussing the time it would take she delved into a hair production that took 4 hours and 240 dollars. It was insane. A number of times I was in so much pain that I just wanted to get up and leave. I wasn't going to write the bad review before because I did like the colour, but now looking at the cut of my hair it's just so so bad. I wont be going back there. read more

I have been going to Justin Nelson for 10 years now, and my Mom started going to him a few years ago, he has us as customers for life!!!! Justin is a perfectionist and takes his time to make sure the color and cut is perfect. I have never had a cut or color from him that I did not love! I walk out of there every time feeling like a movie star! Justin also keeps up with the newest trends and I would say could do pretty much anything with your hair, he is that talented! Avant Garde is a great studio, with great stylists. I have been seeing Tara for more than 5 years, and happily followed her over to this great, relaxing space. Tara is the only person I will let cut or color my hair - she is great at making color look natural, and an expert at making haircuts fit my face and lifestyle. I went in for a color correction and hit the jackpot with Giselle! After having an ombre, I went to one salon (NOT AVANT GUARDE) to get it done back to a natural brunette- but it didn't turn out how I would've liked it, in fact it turned out a extremely dark brown, almost black, with purple/ red hues. I went back to this other to get it corrected- still didnt work- and than tried to dye it myself which kind of worked. I was really concerned & desperate to get a natural look back and needed it done that day, I called Saturday and Giselle picked up and got me right in, literally within 10 minutes. She spent hours on me- from being extremely patient and weighing all my options to explaining the process multiple times (when I wasn't getting it) before she did anything, also letting me see the toners from the actual booklet. We decided on full highlights, and she had extreme attention to detail and brought my hair back to a beautiful natural tone. She did exactly what I was looking for in the beginning. She literally saved me with school starting up again after break and prom around the corner-I couldn't of asked for anything better. Along with that, she is such a sweetheart and really wants to do the best job possible. I would HIGHLY recommend her, she really is amazing!! read more
