The sweet and sour chicken was the most disgusting thing I've ever eaten. Why were there pickles in it? Never again..

I love this restaurant, it's been a staple in the family for years. I miss the breakfast service. I recommend the open faced double meat green chili cheeseburger deluxe. Secondly, the beef fried rice with a side of green chili. I miss the old beef fried rice, with generous green onions and fried egg/beef. The Chinese food is the real deal. Really great fried rice, service is quick and efficient. It's an out of date place but it has a lot of character. I'll be back to try the other Chinese food items on the menu read more

We ate at Avalon's Chinese Restaurant today.This place is always a Great place to eat and the waitress are always Great too.but, today it wasn't all that. I and daughter ordered Enchiladas off menu.I Assumed it was cheese Enchiladas. Nor did I ask waitress what kind .So, got our order. It was h/b. Way just to much h/b on it. My daughter said it had a plain taste.so, she ordered something else.I didn't finish my plate. I agreed with her.Our waitress was rude, didn't do her job well.The manager needs to retrain his employees. Not only that.If you put lunch specials ,you need to put what kind .Choices.or waitress should mention what kind. read more

I had the beef fried rice and the portion was huge! I got 3 meals out of the one portion. It was fried rice with almost a Mexican rice texture to it, but still good. The wait staff were all really attentive and sweet too! read more

What an odd menu! The employees were beyond nice and very attentive. I appreciated the cleanliness, as it's an old building and a lot of places tend to just let old stuff get dirty. We ordered from the Chinese dishes, about half was really good, the other half just "meh" (but totally edible- not bad). Order a to-go for lunch, I order chicken fried rice which was like chicken mix with rice and soy sauce, sweet and sour pork, the vegetables was all soggy no crunch to it it also had pickles in it which I was like what the... AWESOME beef fried rice! Service is pretty good. Waited to be greeted as well as for refills. But it wasn't enough of a wait to ruin my dinner. We had the beef fried rice and the sweet and sour pork. I noticed pickles in the sweet and sour. Gave it a taste and found it to be too pickly. Asked the server to take it off which she did. Portions are HUGE. We got two dinners out of one order. Don't eat the Spanish rice. It's basically white rice mixed with ketchup. I asked the waitress to hold the rice and it still ended up on my plate. Even when she realized her mistake and gave me a free order to go, it was STILL in the to go box she gave me. It's horrible, don't eat it unless if you like your white rice with ketchup then by all means to each their own. read more

So, I had these memories from my childhood of Avalon's being so delicious and lately, I was craving it. They used to serve their takeout in these light blue tubs and I wanted to have some of that Chinese food I remember from about 20 years ago. But... the food was not as I remembered it. I ordered Chicken Chow Mein for takeout. It was 11 or so dollars. A huge serving in a giant styrofoam tub. Not a light blue plastic tub. I ordered it with noodles expecting real noodles, instead they gave me some crunch noodles that you can get in a bag. So I made some Jasmine rice and hoped that it tasted better than it smelled and better than it looked. I could smell the grease! And it wasn't peanut oil. It looked like soup. Milkey, thick with little pieces of chicken, completely soggy green onion and cabbage. No crunch. Mostly soupy off white stuff with tiny bits of chicken floating about. And the taste! Oh the taste! Bland with an oily after taste. It seemed like it was thrown together and not cooked. Like they just mixed the broth stuff with some veggies and scooped in some chicken bits. Utterly disgusting. I will never go back to Avalon and I warn anyone who wants to go there to reconsider. Try King Dragon - not Dragon Express which is nearby, but the real King Dragon. Its the only decent Chinese restaurant in Gallup. read more
