If I could award more STARS, I would. I happened upon this place while trying to organise a repair for a lamp shade with a broken glass panel. The business owner (I didn't get his name) matched and cut a replacement panel while I waited. The cost was minimal and the work exceptional. James shared knowledge! I am attempting my first project using glass, I have lots of questions, and I am very apprehensive without the full understanding of this medium. I was able to research and become comfortable with the starting phases of creating a 4'x8' mosaic design. Now comes the nitty gritty, the selection of types of glass, colors/values of glass, and the process of preparation to adhering glass to surface for design definition. As I said, James helped me with all my questions over the phone, but better still, he showed me all the materials I will need for my mosaic project. He demonstrated the cutting tool I would have to use, and let me take a run at cutting a piece to get a feel. I will definitely use James and his Avalon store for materials and questions. James is a gem in Albany. Avalon Glass Works has incredible pieces and James is an amazing artist. While restoring a fourth generation china cabinet - back from destruction - James designed the masterpiece stained glass windows for the cabinet doors. He paid close attention to the details of the wood drawer and ability to understand my style such that on our "design review" meeting he had the PERFECT design laid out on the table when I walked in. The windows are a perfect fit for the china cabinet and I am so proud to display them in my home. He also designed a window-hanging macintosh rose design. Everyone who walks through my home comments on both pieces. They are truly conversation pieces and I can't believe they're in MY home! When we moved into our house, the front door had a broken window on one side and a wonky but cool stained glass window on the other side. We liked the non-broken window and originally reached out to James at Avalon with the idea that we'd get a copy of it for the other side, where the broken window was. After I sent over a picture, we got on the phone and James said, "Ummm your fleur-de-lys is sideways!" Turns out the non-broken window was a stained glass design cut from some larger window at some point and fitted into our space on its side. So instead of doubling down on the sideways fleur-de-lys we decided to replace both windows with a new design by James. Working with him on design and color was a great joy. His costs and timeframe were both reasonable. Now every time I walk in my front door I pass two lovely, matching, non-sideways, non-broken stained glass windows and think "Thanks James!" read more

The best. What a great experience. James was wonderful to work with and is a truly inspired artist. We feel so lucky to have his work in our house and it truly looks like it could have always been there. We live in a 1921 house in Maxwell Park. We had a window in our foyer that needed some privacy and we couldn't be happier with the results. We are so glad we trusted his expertise and knowledge of period appropriate designs. We came to the table with minimal research and some ideas of what we liked, but he quickly came up with much better ideas and designs. It was a no-brained to let him take over and guide the process. It was a lot of fun to watch his design evolve and to go in to his shop to pick glass. He cut each piece with intention and it couldn't have come out any more special. We all said "WOW" when the project was done!! James walked me through the process from site-visit, to design choices, to glass selection, to review and installation. Our entryway was transformed!! Out with the 1960s yellow bubble-glass, in with a beautiful piece of art that makes me detour to the entry just to see it over and over. As the daughter of an artist, I can say that James truly has an eye for color, composition, texture, and spatial integration. I wish I had more spaces that need a stained glass window, just so I could see what James came up with for them! read more

We stumbled upon this studio when we where having dinner on Solano and Wendy was amazing. She was knee deep in this huge stained glass installation that will be hung on a man's ceiling-back lite, to look like you are looking up from the bottom of a rushing stream-Very impressive. We talked to them and had her and her husband create a stained glass window for this boring window that was on a staircase. We love Arts and Crafts and had them create a window that looked from that time period. They helped us pick out the glass, beautiful glass...German glass. I don't know how to explain how much I love this window, except even when the light isn't hitting it, it is amazing. Does more to a house than any new paint or carpeting. I'm saving my money to have Avalon put a window put in my bathroom. Love Them. read more

1920's leaded glass window meets soccer ball-- ouch! It took me a few different phone calls before I found Avalon Glass Works. Wendy and James are true seasoned crafts people capable of repairing your beautiful old window better than it was pre-soccer ball. Wendy talked through the options of modern glass or even replicating the old wavy glass and the various grades of quality. She recommended basic clear modern glass as the rest were clear. We bought a 1910's craftsman home that was full of leaded glass windows. The leaded windows needed work - they were wavy and loose. I stumbled upon Avalon Glass and so happy that I did. James and co have been great with walking me through what needs to be done with the windows. When it came time to get them out - James was able to fit me in quickly (we wanted them out before foundation work began). Couldn't be happier with these guys.
