They left this in the engine compartment. I heard it rattling against the belt.

Finally making the switch to an independent expert... (Service & Repair Review; have never stepped foot in the show room) Been taking my '07 FJ Cruiser here since moving to the area in 2014. Well until now... This latest episode of suggested repairs has been suspicious and I went for a second opinion. It started with a transfer case seal leak quoted at around $600 9 months ago and was ok to push out a little. 4 months ago, the SAME issue was quoted at $1700, but we pushed again. Then last month, $3500, taking apart the entire transfer case to get to the seals. Still the SAME 'problem', but this approach is not necessary for FJ Cruisers. Landcruisers may need this. Additionally $3600 for oil pan and sump pan repairs except they didn't even exactly know what was seeping, and $2800 for upper and lower control arms. "The bushings are cracked". So staring down $10K of repairs I sought out a well regarded independent who focuses on these vehicles. The verdict: - The oil pan is fine, the seeping liquid came from a bolt on the differential that was not properly tightened when AutoNation performed the differential service. - The upper control arm is fine. They typically last forever. - The lower arm bushing cracks are SURFACE cracks and can go another 50K miles. So makes me wonder how bad those CV boots really were. Those were expensive repairs. - The transfer case seals can be replaced for around the original quote from 9 months ago, except AutoNation won't be the ones doing it. Similar to other reviews, the wait times have increased, the communication decreased. An appointment merely gives you a check-in slot, doesn't mean your repair/service slot is scheduled appropriately, so waiting is not an option anymore. And so many times I had thousands of dollars of repairs performed and they don't even run the car through the car wash. I used to get plenty of coupons or even service manager discounts on more expensive repairs. This has ceased completely. I just got a blank stare from a service manager I haven't dealt with before when asking if there is anything we could do about the price tag. Also I feel the quality of work is not where it should be (anymore). From the improperly tightened differential bolt to a (luckily empty) plastic oil canister that was left in the engine compartment and started rubbing against the engine belt in 2017. Their remedy for that, a car wash. Granted inside and outside, but had to take the car back again just for that. I'm just done with this outfit.

Tires need replacing??

Routine oil change was told we had bald tires on front and needed replacing. Less than 20k rear tires we previously replaced there and was told 3/32" left. Battery replacement quoted was $358. We went to AAA authorized repair facility and battery replacement $228. Oh and tires perfectly fine. The discount oil change will cost you $2k so be careful of this place. We will never go back. Had bad experience before but they said new management.

Check engine light from when I was driving off the dealer lot

I was driving the car off the lot, then the car gets a check engine light with check emission system and check VSA system. I originally brought the car back to get my alternator changed and got I back with more problems.

I highly recommend 949 Auto Repair. I've been coming here…read moresince their previous location, and as long as you're in Orange County, I'll happily drive over to get my car fixed lol. Gary, the owner, always welcomes us warmly in his very clean and organized office. Mike is super reliable and such a nice guy, and Scott always listens carefully to our concerns. Before I found 949 Auto Repair, going to an auto shop as a woman was stressful. I probably got overcharged more than once. But ever since I started coming here, I've never had to worry about that again. They always do excellent work at fair prices. Whenever I have car trouble, 949 Auto Repair is the first place I go. I feel truly lucky to have found them. Thank you always!

Pricing is really competitive, and that's hard to find in a trustworthy mechanic. They are never pushy with suggested services, but will outline them to you and the problems that may occur down the line. I have never felt pressured to do work I didn't feel comfortable with. They've done quite a few minor repairs for my OId school Japanese SUV. This would otherwise be a 5 star review, however I was told of an oil leak and a suggested service was to power wash the bottom of the vehicle to see where the leak was coming from w/ a dye, however upon inspection the oil pan, transfer case etc. had not been cleaned, and the dirt was still caked on. I attribute this to perhaps a miscommunication. I decided not to escalate because the AAA Discount helped offset the cost. I hope to continue coming here, as the location is perfect for me to continue doing maintenance on my vehicle.
