In January I went to Wesson at AutoMechs with an issue with my SUV. It wouldn't start and I was worried I had a major problem on my hands. I left my vehicle at the shop with a estimate of 1k. When I showed up to the shop, to pick up my vehicle, I discovered my bill was just $200. The reason? Wesson, aside from being an EXCELLENT MECHANIC, is a ethical, good person. Instead of replacing an expensive part which would have been easier, Wesson FIXED the malfunctioning part and got my vehicle up and running at a fraction of the cost. Was referred by a friend. I contacted the shop stating my axel needs repair, upon further discussion he stated it could be something other than that. I asked to send pics he then provided a number. He Stated to take it to a body shop due to visible body damage. I clearly state I am only interested in the repair of the wheel area which is needed/ a priority. He then texts who referred me to state he won't work on my car and that he told me he wont. Which he never did until after I was contacted by who referred me notifying me that he "told me" he wouldn't work on my car. After I stated I will get it towed to the shop. He then at 1:37 said he would not service my vehicle. read more

I really appreciate Wesson over at auto mechs! It is so hard to find an honest and reliable mechanic, and I'm so glad I found one! I brought my car in because the breaks were squeaking and I was worried the break pads were wearing off. I also recently noticed one of my taillights wasn't working. Rather then doing unnecessary work on my car to charge me, Wesson inspected the car, let me know the break pads were fine and just needed lubrication and fixed the taillight for me. As I'm new to a Oakland, my bf took my car to the dealership for a diagnostic test, and the experience was terrible. They were not attentive in the least, ridiculously overpriced, and outright rude. I wasn't having that, so I looked around and came across Auto Mechs, which just happens to be black-owned. From my first call, Wesson was extremely attentive, helpful, professional while friendly, reasonable, honest, and knowledgeable about addressing the issues recommended by the dealership. I took my car in a couple days later and Wesson began working on it immediately. He even called to update me on the progress of the brake, valve, and ATF change. During that update he quoted me a rate, but once I came to pay he informed me that he found a cheaper way to get to and replace my valve which cut my price in half . So he saved me tons of money, had all my services completed in a timely manner, provided exceptional service, and earned a new loyal customer. They fixed my squealing belts, finicky power-steering, cleaned my oil and filters, and stopped my coolant from leaking. The place is not much to look at, but they are professional, courteous, and do solid work at half the price of RepairSmith (and without all the RepairSmith headaches with scheduling and incompetent techs). It's also a Black-owned-and-run business, and it's obvious that supporting the local community is important to them. You could do far worse than these fine fellows. read more

I just acquired a 2012 Honda Accord from family, bought a ¨Cat Clamp¨to protect its catalytic converter, and brought it here to have it installed. Wesson had not installed one of these before but was willing to see what was involved (and they were open on a Saturday), The manufacturers instructions were skimpy and I texted him 2 YouTube videos on its installation. A couple of hours later he called to say that the Accord´s undercarriage did not have the proper anchor points to install it. I came by minutes later and he showed me while the car was still up on the rack exactly how that would not work, and in fact the main cat for that model is tucked up under the engine and would be difficult to steal. After all that, he refused any compensation for his time. 5 stars for courtesy, honesty and clear explanations. read more

Thank you so much Wesson for fixing a problem that three other well reviewed mechanics could not find. Having an older honda civic (1991) is great in so many ways, except I was having very difficult time finding the right mechanic after my regular guy retired. I tried so many different mechanics in the east bay, all who generally do a great job but don't have experience with older cars. I kept having a recurring problem where the engine would not turn over after driving it for a short time. And of course the car would behave when I took it in for service, making it very difficult to find/solve the problem. I was very worried I would have to give up my beloved car when a neighbor recommended Auto Techs. Of course, once again the car behaved when left with Wess but he and his team looked deeper and found some misbehaving parts that they felt were contributing to the problem. After hearing from a friend about what a good experience they had at Automechs, I started bringing my cars to Wesson. About 5 of my friends started bringing their vehicles to him for repair, and we have all been really appreciative of his work. I created this Yelp account just so I can post this. I happy to know a knowledgable, sharp mechanic who has the time and patience to answer my questions and give me a good idea of what's going on. In the last 2 years, I have taken 3 different cars to Wesson at Automechs. I have shopped around, and his prices very reasonable for the customer. His quality of work is very good. I trust that he is doing his best to solve the problem efficiently. Honest and friendly customer service. Recently, I had a good amount of work done on a car there - including replacing head gaskets, a tune up, replacing brake pads, and replacing a front wheel bearing. My hubs were also in pretty bad shape, but since I was planning on selling the car after a few more months, I was erring on the side of passing on that repair to save money. While he was doing the other repairs, Wesson went ahead and replaced my hubs for me at no extra charge, as well as rotated my tires and fixed another small thing that I wasn't even aware of. I took my Mercedes to Auto Mechs after visiting a facility in East Oakland by the name of Family Auto Care. Family Auto Care's service was far below average, and the mechanics at Family Auto Care were flat out incompetent. They held onto my Mercedes for a week, refused to answer the phone when I called, and neglected to provide updates on the progress or lack of progress with regard to my vehicle. Finally, after a week elapse, Errol the proprietor of the business actually admitted that he had reached the extent of his knowledge, and could not perform the repairs as promised. As a consequence, Auto Mechs, (Wesson) was recommended by a very good friend. Upon accepting the car for service, Wesson's customer service and communication was immediate, and professional. He diagnosed the problem with the car within hours, and had the original problem resolved pretty much the same day, and at a reasonable rate. The car required additional work that I was not aware of; however, prior to performing the work, Wesson called and explained why the work was needed, and what it would cost. I got the impression that the man simply likes to bring a vehicle up to top operating condition before it leaves his shop. My car delivers a quiet, and smooth ride as a result of the work performed by Auto Mechs. It is irrelevant that Auto Mechs is African American owned; but be that as it may, if you ever wanted to support impeccable African American service, Auto Mech is the place to do it. read more

Wesson is so so nice that I'm sad to be writing this review. But, the work that was done on my car left me with a super dangerous vehicle. I took my car to AutoMechs to have a lot of work done on the front end. It is an old Subaru and Wesson seemed confident that he could fix the problems. They replaced the tie rods and in doing so cross-threaded them and forgot to put in the COTTER PIN!! This meant that I unknowingly drove from Oakland to Seattle with a wheel that was on the brink of falling off. The other major repair issue was that in replacing the brake system they somehow wrapped the brake house around the strut in such a way that there is tension on the hose and it will burst leaving me with no front brakes. So, after $1000 in repairs I have had to pay $600 to fix them and have been driving a car with a wheel that is about to fall off and brakes that may go out at any moment. Sketchy. Super kind people, but terrible and scary mechanics. Also, the repairs took longer than they expected and I was made to feel like I was to blame. I felt bad then, but now realize that they are just incompetent over at AutoMechs. Stay safe, stay away from this mechanic. read more
