A handyman is not just another contractor for large projects but he is the one which you will always need for mid-size & small projects. In a way, it's a marriage for life; therefore, you need to find the right one. For a long while, I have been investigating the top San Diego County's handymen, their Licenses, Bonds, Insurance, BBB, Background & Reviews. I hire a lot of contractors & I always investigate them thoroughly; therefore, almost all my contractors are the best of the best. Read my reviews for some of the top contractors of each field. After a lengthy research & investigation, I came up with a short list & finally it all came down to "The Traveling Toolbox" as the handyman of my choice. I give myself credit to find this fine gentleman Michael Fitzgerald, the owner of The Travelling Toolbox. He is a third generation of substantial & solid handymen. His grandfather, father, uncle & cousins were & are handymen. There were streets in El Cajon named after them because they built parts of El Cajon. The Travelling Toolbox is a family business which covers practically major parts of the Greater San Diego County. This is not yet another Bang & Bologna, fled by night handyman service but they actually have electrical & general contractor licenses with decades of experience. They do everything from simple giant TV wall installation, all the way to electrical, plumbing, tiling, kitchen cabinets, bathrooms, door installations, & remodeling. They almost do everything. No job is too small or too large for them. Why Travelling Toolbox? Michael Fitzgerald has been doing what he does since his early teens working with his father. He actually studied this stuff & trained for life. He has all the proper licenses. He is a veteran who has done 2 tours of Iraq. As a solid American patriot, it is a no brainer for me to hire veterans, especially when they are experts like Michael. Let me give you 3 examples of what Michael has done for me: * Replacing & building 2 large double door kitchen cabinet solid floors. * Replacing a half vented windowed steel exterior laundry room complete door (door, frame & casing) & laundry room wall edge moldings. * Replacing a very difficult complete exterior front double door (door, frame & casing) & painting the exterior large wooden frame molding, interior casing & grouting the edge tiles. Observations As a journalist, I observe my contractors & ask questions so I learn from them. After 5 minutes of talking to Michael, I knew that he will be my lifelong handyman. After doing a few jobs for me, he has proven me correct. Michael is an honest, hardworking, expert. He is an honorable veteran & a decent guy. Ask him to do a job for you. He will tell you if he can do it or not but if he takes the contract, he will go out of his way to satisfy you. Don't even try to beat his prices because he is very reasonable. Let's say that I am an obsessive, compulsive perfectionist. I find Michael to be very detail oriented & neat. If he passed my extremely selective taste & test, then he is good enough for you. Other companies told me not really feasible to fix financially, tried to sell me on new door,sensors and new opener when opener only 2 year's old. This man with Eastgate cleaned sensors, and webs were main reason not working right so recommend I used little paint brush once week to just keep from problems, got a latter,within 30 minutes a few adjustments and brand new working condition. I quote, well ma'am that's the difference between my company and others, my name is everything. My motto is quality over quantity. Yes I have bills to, but I'm in business to stay in business, not to just replace door's that don't need replacing. Garage door's as well as commercial door's are like anything else we have, everything needs maintenance. Things like this needs cleaning,parts replaced from usage and it's also subject to weather. Wow, take a moment to absorb that. I was charged a service call and for a couple small part's, but he didn't charge labor,surcharge, and other charges on my other estimates from other companies. I hope he stays around a long time. I will never use anyone else. Honest was understatement. 2 other neighbors came over seeing him at my home and two more job's because of reasonable, trusting and great feeling of not being taken advantage of. Funny he was on vacation and took care of us on his Time with family but did all three of our door's in about 2.5 hour's. So get estimate if you want, but as we were talking only thing he can't get is huge discounts like bigger corporation do, but after seeing what he charges and others still better deal because if new door is needed he tries to lower cost of service call or gives credit to referrals. So because of other neighbors he didn't charge me for service call. I'm so happy with door now, opening and closing faster,smoothly, omg much more quiet. So if you want to throw money away and support corporate companies taking advantage and charging double what they pay for doors and surcharge ect..save yourself a headache and call this small business owner and support honest,hard working American knowing he's not trying to go out of business. You won't pay for anything you Don't need. Even takes time to show you why, or what your parts look like compared to new part, explains how and why they wear out. So excited. ..everyone else made me think it was going to cost me $2000 - $2500 when after discount barely cost me $120. And other saved at least $1000. That's huge difference. When the new belt arrived at our home the Owner came out same day and got me back in service, programmed the 3 new remote controls, and made sure the other door was operating properly before leaving.
