I will be referring my family to Auto Tec going forward. I had such great customer service. Not only did they take care of my issue I brought the car in for, but they kept it to the original quote even when the cost to do the work increased a bit as they started. They also let me know things to keep an eye out for in the future before they go bad and make it worse for my to try and repair. This shop feels more like a mom and pop shop. These guys are amazing! My car recently broke down on the freeway so I knew I needed to get it checked out fast. Being someone who knows nothing about cars I was nervous, especially about the cost. When I originally called the shop they were extremely helpful and let me drop off my car at night and leave my keys in the drop box to accommodate my schedule. They were thorough, diligent and transparent throughout the whole process. They took their time determining what was causing the issues with my car. Once my new parts were ordered my car was ready basically the next day. Thankfully it didn't cost me an arm and a leg either and the quality of the work was incredible! The guys at the shop truly take care of your car while keeping you in mind during the entire process. Now that I have my car back I can't even tell it had issues a couple days ago. Great staff and great service at Auto Tec. I took my car for the engine light to this shop. Based on my experience at other locations, I could get pushed to do unnecessary services or charges. But at Auto Tec, the issue was detected quickly, and was advised to change the gas cap ( which was the issue). No pushy service, no extra costs. And I should mention how clean was the shop. Very disappointed in services provided on my car. I went in due to hearing a squealing when accelerating and reversing. They diagnosed and serviced my car, however after getting my car back the reverse squealing started again that same week. I called and took my car back in. They did a quick evaluation but reported the squealing was nothing concerning. I called a week later because it didn't make sense to me that my car is still audibly squealing because this has never been an issue for my car. They again reported that it was nothing concerning and explained that my drum brake was dusty, which they offered to clean off. If this was the case, it would've made sense to address this when they initially serviced my car or when I went for the follow up. The office staff were friendly however they didn't provide clear explanations for the cause of the squealing after the diagnostic and what they had serviced (which lead me to following up twice). They also verbally confirmed that they had rotated my tires, as I had requested, but it wasn't listed on the services provided on the receipt which would've been appropriate. Overall not satisfied and will be taking my car elsewhere. read more

My car a/c died during the heatwave, and I discovered that my regular mechanic of the last 10 years had gone out of business permanently due to the pandemic. I checked out the local options and decided to give Auto Tec a try. Both the front desk guy Don and the technician Maro were awesome to work with. Maro went for a brief (masked!) test drive with me, explained that the hissing sound was likely low freon levels, and Don provided an accurate and detailed estimate. They fixed it while I was there so I never had to call for a ride home. The price was reasonable and there was neither a hint of condescension for my lack of knowledge about cars nor an attempt to upsell me on other services. A couple months later, I brought my car back for an oil change and a broken turn signal. They found that my car was burning oil before doing any other work on it, called me, showed me, gave me some honest recommendations about what to do next (get a new car...preferably a Toyota), and refused payment for their time. The sad part is that I did end up getting a new car with comprehensive service plans, so I will probably not be going back to Auto Tec for a while, but I will absolutely recommend them to anyone who does need a mechanic. Honest, friendly, and reliable - it doesn't get much better than this. read more

Having noticed my A/C feeling weaker a few weeks ago, it was no surprise to me when one fine (warm) day in San Jose that...alas...my A/C has disappeared. Did my due diligence for my Subaru Impreza (check the A/C Fuse, and noted that the compressor clutch did not grab when activating A/C) and even did the Amazon A/C can refill... NO DICE Time to call in the big guns... Time to call ... DON at Auto Tec! Okay, honestly this is my first time coming here, but after checking out Yelp, it seemed like Auto Tec and their review stood heads and shoulders above the rest. Intrigued, I requested an appointment via their website, and cancelled my appointment at the Subaru "specialist" shop (who happens to be nearby). After some email correspondence on nailing down an available date, I proceeded on in. Service was excellent, with a personal greeting from Don. (BTW Don, if you're reading this, yes, I'm here to see YOU, and maybe I don't need to move my car LOL :P ) I was welcomed in quickly and he quickly gave me an idea of what to expect, both in time and price. The diagnosis fee and process was clearly explained which put me at ease. In fact, I'd like to point out that he did not rush me, and took the time to explain how it worked at his shop, and answered my questions. Hearing that for my situation, a potential fix 'could' cost up to $1,000, made a lump jump in my throat! Of course, my car is my baby, and I would not settle for aftermarket parts, OEM parts drive up the price, but man...I was honestly nervous. After heading off to work in a backup car, I decided to call in early to get a status on my vehicle around Noon. Don picked up quickly and had a moment to tell me the results... *YATTA!!!* The diagnosis was that it was a simple problem, involving only minor parts (gaskets mostly)! A wave of relief washed over me as I heard the news and Don even said my car could be done in 30 minutes. Of course, I wouldn't be available until end of day, but it was so nice to hear that they didn't "sit on my car" and wait until late in the day. I drove over there at 4.30, happily paid just a bit more than the diagnosis fee, and took my (breezy blowing and chilly winded) car home with a huge smile on my face... Definitely I know where to come back to, if I have any A/C problems! TL,DR: Honesty and Integrity is what I experienced today. No upcharge on a SIMPLE fix. A wonderful experience [with a surprising greeting ;) ], excellent service and patience explaining. Truly a class act! read more

This is a long overdue review. In fact, I looked Auto Tec up to recommend to someone and was surprised to discover I hadn't written a review yet. I brought my '98 Subaru Impreza here during 2014 to 2017, before I moved up the peninsula. I grew to really appreciate and trust Don, Ricardo and the other guys here. As a woman who enjoys cars and likes to learn about them, I'm sensitive to how mechanics treat me -- and these guys always treated me like I have a brain. They took time to explain problems and show them to me, so that I could make informed decisions. Best of all, the people at this family-owned shop have integrity. I have a finely tuned B.S. meter, and I never felt they were trying to take advantage of me. In fact, when my beloved Impreza was 19 years old and getting increasingly rickety, Don told me it was time to start shopping for a new car. He could've kept selling me expensive repairs. It took me a year of car shopping and research to figure out what I wanted, and in the meantime, I moved away and made do with local shops to keep my old car running. But when I found a '13 WRX for sale in the South Bay, I brought it to Auto Tec for a thorough inspection. They found a few minor issues, but gave it a thumbs-up. Not only that, but Don took me out for a test drive and gave me some very helpful tips about driving a high-performance vehicle. I've now been driving it for a year without any problems. I regret that Auto Tec is no longer close enough to be my regular shop, but I'm fortunate to have found another good mechanic in South San Francisco. Thanks, guys! read more

I can't say enough good things about these guys. After Autozone told me my battery was good, these guys tested it 3 times and it was no good. They were able to supply me with a print out of the tests so I can maybe get a refund from Autozone. They replaced the battery and had my car ready in half a day. Based on our experience Auto Tec is a fraud, deceitful shop that can't even perform basic auto repairs or diagnosis. Auto Tec misdiagnosed our simple auto problem. Auto Tec's diagnosis method is to throw in every possibly cause of the problem vs. detecting its root cause. For e.g. if the patient had headache, per Auto Tec it could be your heart, lungs, brain, etc.. Luckily I got a second opinion from another local auto shop, who not only pinpointed the root cause, but showed it to me first hand on the auto, which Auto Tec refuses to do, under the pretext of some regulations. Auto Tec will not demonstrate to the customer, where on the auto, the problem is, and the location of the cause, especially after the auto is on a lift. When I first complained, Auto Tec's owner, Connor Grifoul, implied that if I were to show him that second opinion diagnosis paperwork, he would refund my money. After showing second opinion paperwork, Connor while admitting to wrong diagnosis, now went back on his promise to refund, and asked for more concessions Connor then stated he would give me the money back in exchange "for a 5 star review". He baits customer into giving in further personal credit card information with false promises. Asking for a 5 star review for a horrible experience, and for him, and his shop having poor, to no auto knowledge, misdiagnosing a simple auto problem is not only unethical but cheating and defrauding the customers and the local community Connor then emailed me that the fake 5 star review cannot be edited or removed. This proves that Connor buys folks to write positive reviews. Connor would then get caught in one lie, after another, and proved to be totally untrustworthy. For e.g. he pulls out the "harassment" card, when Connor is the one harassing, defrauding his customers. Bottom line, run away from this auto shop if you want to avoid a bad ordeal, not to mention, they don't have the auto know-how to do any repairs, not even a simple fix Replying to Auto Tec Connor's comment Connor does not deny to the poor diagnosis, asking folks to write positive reivews for money, engaging in lies, and more. Connor claims he is willing to refund $50, but never acts on it. Connor has my personal details and can very well mail the check or credit the charge card. He claims fake harassment, while he is the one inviting me to his shop, to pin more false allegations. I am happy to show my phone log to anyone to prove that I have never called his shop since 3 months, vs. his shop calling me on 3/15/2023, other calls from block #, and Connor's 10+ badgering emails to me, after which I stopped responding and blocked his emails. No one is calling you, your shop, or emailing you. Stop the fake accusations. Filing a false report to authorities is a crime. If you did file a report, please provide the report # and badge # of the officer so the truth can be revealed. Example of Connor's lies, he claims police reached out to me. Truth is no police has contacted me or left a voice mail. Don't fool the world you are willing to refund. Do it and prove it. Actions speak louder than words. It is highly unprofessional for a business owner to resort to personal attacks. Connor and his shop are no expert on autos, let alone being competent enough to make judgments on customer's mental health. read more

Making the Appointment - Friendly over the phone - Asked for the specific problems I was experiencing - Provided options for day-of possible fixes or a future visit - Made the appointment a few days in the future The Appointment - Let me in the office early (they open at 8, my appointment was at 8, I showed up at 7:45) - Promptly checked me in with the list of the day's appointments on the desk - Listened to my descriptions of my car's noises again and drove my car around the block himself - Clearly explained that he heard the same things, and let me know what he was going to do - Removed a ping pong ball that was lodged under my Xterra and saved it for me - Drove me around the block to ensure we were no longer hearing noises I will definitely return! They were both incredibly friendly and down-to-earth and I never once felt like I was being left out of an issue or conversation - which is important to me since I don't want to get ripped off. read more
