I clearly explained my situation--that I didn't want to put money into the car, just wanted a price. The guy insisted he needed to see it, saying it could be something else. Thinking it might be a minor issue, I brought it in. All he did was check the transmission fluid level and scan for codes--both things that require no special shop skills. Then he told me I needed a brand-new transmission, not a rebuilt one. The kicker? He charged me $175 for doing almost nothing. If you're planning to have your transmission replaced, maybe they're fine for that. But for me, their customer service is a zero. I checked my own fluid and code scans are free at AutoZone--though I never had a check engine light, so no codes would have shown anyway. To make matters worse, they also charged me for a part I requested a refund for, which was never replaced, and they never refunded me. Terrible way to do business.

The owner is obviously a hard working guy who loves what he does. He's knowledgeable, friendly, and not sleazy like so many other used car sales persons. He talked to me the same way he talked to my boyfriend, a total plus as a person who feels like I am at risk of being taken advantage of simply by being a woman at an auto shop. My boyfriend was looking for a used Subaru. Unfortunately, the car he'd seen online had sold, but a similar one had just arrived at the lot. The owner told us that car wasn't yet for sale because it needed some work. He detailed the issues which he had identified and planned to fix that week, but let us look at the car and even take it for a test drive. He told us that, after the repairs, the car would be listed at a very reasonable price. We put down a small (refundable) deposit and came back about 5 days later to pick up the car. The work he had specified had all been completed, as well as a new inspection and emissions. He included a 6 month warranty. He apologetically explained that a parts delay during repairs had prevented him from washing the car and topping it off with gas, and gave my boyfriend some cash to fill up -- seriously, how nice is that?!
