I made the decision to buy a used car last week after the Auto Doc's Inspections detailed reports confirmed that the car is in good shape ;) I was in the market for a few weeks looking for a used car. By Google search auto inspections around the area, I came across the website. I called the phone number and it was Dennis on the other end. He is very friendly and helpful and I have been calling or emailing him with questions from test drives. Every time he patiently gave detailed explanation which really helped me making purchasing judgements. When I finally test-drove a car that I really like, I called Dennis right away. He scheduled the inspection the next day, which took about 2 hrs. He test-drove 5 miles (more than I did) to examine cruise controls, ABS, etc. He took photos of the car and went through details that I would never catch (you can find a report example from his website). I received the report the same night and was glad that the car doesn't have mechanical or frame, structural problems. Dennis also did some research and pointed out what kind service down the road when the car hits certain mileage. The next day I went to the dealer and bought the car. Dennis is great. My wife and I are in the San Diego area and were looking for a good inspector to check out some cars for us. We emailed Dennis and he got back to us very promptly. We asked him a couple questions before even committing to purchase an inspection and he answered them very thoroughly. You can tell he cares about the customer. Anyway, then we asked him to come down to SD to look at a car for us. He brings his truck with a lift and all his diagnostic equipment right to you, even if you're not in LA. I would like to heartily recommend a fellow ex-New Yorker who conducts the most thorough auto inspection I have ever read. Dennis goes through every nook and cranny in the car to discover anything that is not up to used vehicle standards. I have used other inspection services which can do a decent visual inspection, but very few can do a full scan of the computer modules. $185 may seem high, but you get your money's worth with AutoDoc; the $129 guys are in and out in 45 minutes. Dennis and his team did an amazing job! I regularly buy cars from the Internet and have used many different inspection services over the years. Hands down this was the best service I've ever used. I'm on the East Coast and the car (a very expensive Porsche C4S Cab) was in LA. Without his help I would have had to have incurred the considerable expense and loss of time traveling to inspect the car myself. and in the end I would not have done nearly as thorough a job. The report itself was incredibly thorough, there were detailed pictures of every aspect of the car noting even the slightest imperfections. Quite honestly I never heard of this company until I stumbled upon it on yelp. I was in the market for an M3 and I found an extremely clean car from a surgeon. Upon reading their website, I was impressed with the services they provided, far more thorough than the national chains like AIM or Carchex. I was especially impressed to see they check for ANY type of body damage, even repaints which neither AIM or Carchex provides. In fact, despite auto doc being just a little more expensive than those 2, I felt it was worth every penny. After speaking with Dennis about the car, I felt 100% comfortable with making the purchase. I used use them to buy a used 2004 Hyundai Sonata from a private person. Before buying I had auto doc drive out and inspect the vehicle. This was easy for me and the car owner. My strategy was to buy a nice used car directly from the owner rather than go through a used car lot. I looked a number of cars posted on the internet and had my best candidate infected by auto doc. This saved me a lot of money compared to buying through a salesperson, and I had more assurance of the quality of the car because auto doc provided a really detailed independent inspection report. I have had the car for near six months now, and it is really working well. I am no auto expert, but the report from auto doc was pretty clear and comprehensive. The car looks almost new but was much cheaper. I expect the car will last me for at least a decade. I recommend everyone thinking of a used car should buy a car in this fashion. read more

As long as Dennis is in business and as long as I'm purchasing previously loved vehicles I will never use anybody else. I'm in the process of purchasing a 9 year old SUV. I typically consider myself an excellent judge of a good quality used vehicle that was well cared for by responsible car owners. Believe me, with a 9 year old vehicle, it's pretty easy to tell which ones were taken care of and which ones were driven like they stole it. But as cream puffy as a vehicle can look and drive during a test drive, that's simply no substitute for having a professional mechanic check it out for hidden potentially wallet draining problems. I sent Dennis out to inspect a nearly cosmetically perfect 2005 Ford Expedition. The owner had already told me of several small issues and also what recent services had been performed. Super easy to book and the car that I wanted was inspected the next day at 9am. Super professional and detailed report with photos. The car that I was looking to buy on the surface looked great but Dennis was able to point out the flaws that I as a consumer probably would not have caught until later. The mechanics of the car were great but the paint was not. I then called him the next day and asked his general opinion of how this could be corrected. He had no vested interest in this deal so I feel like his opinion was honest. I shared this report with the dealer and they are going to correct these flaws. I would recommend him to anyone that is out of state and wants a thorough inspection and or someone local. I live out of state so it was impossible for me to look at the car in person. I completed the inspection request on-line in the afternoon, the vehicle was inspected the next morning. I received a phone call from Dennis after the inspection was completed in which he gave me a very detailed description of what he found and potential costs for repairs that could be incurred due to issues he discovered during the inspection. He also found body/collision damage even though the Carfax did not indicate any. A very thorough report, including photographs was sent to me on the evening of the inspection. The vehicle I was looking at appeared to be in very good condition from the photos I saw of it but Dennis's inspection proved otherwise which, in my opinion, kept me from purchasing a potentially "problem car". I had Dennis McDonald look over a BMW prior to purchase at a dealership. He identified a number of flaws with the vehicle which I used to my advantage in further negotiation with the dealer and it ended up more than paying for his fees which are very reasonable considering the level of detail, care, and experience/credential that he brings to this. Note that the dealer inspection itself was a 100-pt inspection which was marked excellent in all categories. He was prompt (same day inspection) as the dealer had another interested buyer with an informal report given by phone within an hour of the inspection (he spent about 30 min detailing what he found) and a formal 29 page report with numerous photos at the end of the day. The process gave me the peace of mind as he had the necessary training and certification (ASE master tech, body shop, chassis, wheel alignment, etc) and leverage for negotiations. I would not purchase a used car without his expertise; and will go to him again for a future purchase. His price is very reasonable for what he brings to the table and likely will save you another 10% off the negotiated price, it's not a promise but that was what I got. Okay, so believe it or not, Auto Doc's really is the reason I joined yelp. Dennis and his inspections are absolutely excellent. I'd been searching the Northwest for a certain make and model of car, and after 6 weeks without success, I decided to expand my search to SoCal. I looked to yelp for help in finding the right person to inspect my prospective new rides, and all roads led to Dennis and Auto Doc's. I called, Dennis answered, we made an appointment, he made arrangements with the seller for the inspection, and after a few hours Dennis called to give me his assessment. He performed the "special requests" I made, and followed up later that evening with the full report via email and lots of pictures with descriptive text. I was very impressed with Dennis' thoroughness and promptness. But mostly, I was happy to have found a trustworthy, responsible, and reliable expert who was willing to share his expertise and accommodate my special requests without hesitation. After speaking with him, it felt like Dennis was an old pal. Great guy. You'll know as soon as you contact them how quickly they can go do the inspection (in my case, it was the same day each time), which is extremely important when you've found that "right car" at the right price. The major services I researched can take 1-2 days to arrange for the inspection, and then up to another day to get the report to you - that's longer than most sellers feel comfortable waiting. Auto Docs also does paint thickness measurement to identify repairs/repaints, jacks up the car to inspect underneath, pulls the codes from the computer (which other services charge more for), and several other tests that are unavailable with most competitors.
