I contacted Auto Doc's midday on a Saturday and they were available to make a trip down to Carlsbad early the next morning to do a pre-purchase used car inspection for me. I don't live in Carlsbad, so this was all executed without my having to be there - Dennis interfaced with the car seller and took care of everything. He called me right after to give me a summary of how it all went, and by the end of the day I had a full 40-page report as well. It was every bit as thorough as you'd want it to be. In fact, when I went down later to complete the purchase, the seller commented on how thorough Dennis had been with his inspection - even lifting the car up (on site!) to inspect the undercarriage. He spent I believe nearly two hours on it, making sure I wasn't buying something that was gonna have the wheels fall off five miles from the dealer. I had been a little nervous in searching for inspectors because most of the inspection companies I saw have iffy online reviews, and their websites have FAQs where they explain why their inspectors *don't* need to be certified mechanics. It's like, no, dude, I kind of wouldn't mind an inspector who knows what he's doing, thank you very much. But Dennis is the real deal, a certified, experienced mechanic with a deep resume, and the proof was in just how meticulous and perceptive he was with his work. This is such an excellent business concept. You would be foolish to not utilized Auto Doc's Inspections, as it is a no-brainer. Called the company, and Dennis immediately picked up, answered a plethora of questions I had for him as I was wanting to be absolutely sure I wanted to pay $185. After speaking with him, I knew it was a good move to use Auto Doc. Dennis was at the dealer the next morning, did the full inspection on a used Tundra, and called me as I arrived at the dealer a few hours later to provide critical same-day information about the vehicle that I could use in negotiating a more reasonable price. Dennis is awesome. He may have saved my son's life. We had bought a car with frame damage from a dealer. Dennis found out that the front frame was much more damaged than the dealer had disclosed to us. He said that my son would not be protected should he encounter an accident with what was going to be his first car. Dennis found many other bad things on this car, and he concluded that this car had been in a major accident and not properly repaired. A potential buyer for my boyfriend's car used this place to have a PPI done. The guy came and inspected it for 2 hours and just left without a word. We went to check the car and found that the center console was left extremely dirty in the photos shown. Also the guy used up all the gas in the car probably taking the M5 out for a joyride, leaving my boyfriend with barely any gas to make it to the station. The headlight washer was also popping out and we found a bunch of bolts inside the car that were supposed to be on the bumper and skid plate. Upon completion, I received a call to collect my vehicle which was parked at the same location, exactly as I left it. Within 48 hours I received a thorough report, well over 10 pages, clearly stating the highlights of the inspection and emphasis on the faults along with any error messages he had found. I came across a used car that I've been looking for and was in a hurry to buy it before anybody else does. The problem was that I don't have any friends that can go with me to verify the car is in good condition. I watched a lot of Youtube videos on used car tips, and during my research, I came across the fact that there are professional auto inspectors. Found Auto Doc's inspections on Google search. They were able to do the same-day inspection, and within hours gave me a full report. I compared a few inspection technicians' websites, such as Lemon Squad and others I do not recall. Although Auto Doc's certainly wasn't the cheapest, it was the most comprehensive. One of the distinguishing factors was that this place actually raises the car with their hydraulic jacks and inspects the bottom of the car thoroughly. Also, other places do not advertise frame damage specialist; I'm guessing this is because they are not experts in detecting frame damage. But this one does. Last but not least, they do a sonar test on painting to find the thickness of paint coating. They then compare this thickness to manufacturer's OEM specs, and tell you whether a repaint has been performed or not. Wow that's pretty amazing. Dennis was really helpful over the phone, before the inspection, and especially after the inspection. This wasn't just a business for money. He actually wanted to help and it was clearly evident. He made recommendations, provided relevant information, and best of all, the inspection report was fabulous. I was so happy with the defects that he found not only because I can use this fact as leverage in negotiating a price, but also because he provided his personal and professional opinion on approximate repair cost, whether it's negligible, how long it may take before I MUST do the repair, the extent of damage, the consequence of potential breakdown, etc. One thing I didn't realize before he went to inspect the car is that he does not talk to the sales person about any content of his inspection because that is my intellectual property. This is good and bad. Good because dealer/seller will not share the same information so the buyer can bargain for a lower price. Bad because if the seller denies the damages that are pointed out by the buyer, it is hard for the buyer to make his point (due to lack of experience with cars and etc). I recommend that you ask Dennis or any other inspector to inform the seller about any NEGATIVE findings and keep the good info to himself. This way, the seller can't say anything to a certified inspector. Overall, I strongly recommend Auto Doc's in your future used car purchases. Although there is no guarantee, they are really good at what they do, and the $200 fee really is chump change compared to the possible savings from the information you get. Plus, peace of mind for $200 is a very inexpensive price, especially when you are investing money on a car that probably costs more than $10,000. If the car is $10000, it's only an additional 2%. I placed an order for a Pre Purchase Inspection on a 1972 Mercedes 280SE on a Thursday afternoon. On Friday (the following day) about 9pm I received a comprehensive report of the car. It contained 50 pictures of the car, many with close ups and notes of damage. Report contained a comprehensive list of items that worked and did not work. Some of the sellers claims were found to be untrue. As I don't live in LA receiving the report was very helpful for a car I didn't want to inspect in person and I would use Auto Docs to do another inspection for me in the future. Dennis is great. How? I am not a good talker. Let me just list some facts: 1) He can do same-day inspection, and same day report. Called him around 9:30am. He is in La Jolla at 1pm. Would be 10 min late because of travel, he called me around 11:45am to inform me. Maybe he is a German, lol 2) He is well equipped. Paint sonar sensor; little ramp for lifting the car; computers; all sorts of stuff and gadgets you could imagine about an "AutoDoc" 3) Very thorough inspection. Almost 2 hour work. Very detailed. All pictured and documented. 4) Detailed report. Lots of suggestions and explanations. 5) Not to mention: you get the "Friend of Life" package. It's like a family mechanic. I haven't used it yet. Dennis agreed to do that, and he was also able to do it not some time on Saturday but in the morning on Saturday. He called on the phone right after he was done and told me in short about the car. I needed a mobile mechanic to inspect a used 98 BMW 323. Dennis was prompt, on location within an hour. I watched as he does inspection and he is very thorough. He looks at everything! He explains and answers questions as he works too. And he is a very nice guy. Ok, for that reason I would give him a 5. Now let me tell you why, if I could, I would give him more stars. He offers himself as a mechanic resource after completion of this job. I have called him regarding his report and he told me in detail how to fix the problems I can fix myself, and what to tell mechanic to do about the other ones. I took my car to a local mechanic to fix the problem that Dennis found during his inspection. That mechanic told me I needed a new radiator. It seemed fishy and I called Dennis. We talked it over and he told me what to ask the mechanic, because given what the mechanic had told me, Dennis didn't think either that I needed a new radiator. Dennis even offered to speak with the mechanic himself. So I went up there and made the guy show me where he thought it was broken, and it wasn't broken at all! Dennis saved me hundreds of dollars that I might have given this mechanic who is either incompetent or dishonest or both. Right then and there his car inspection paid for itself. Basically, Dennis is like having full time access to ask a Car Talk guy a question about your car, but even better than Car Talk, he knows personally the vehicle you are speaking about! Also, the price he lists on his website may seem higher than that of his competitors. Two things regarding this: First, don't be fooled by the other low prices listed, because I called around, and they tack on a bunch of fees: an extra $30 bucks for travel, an extra $60 for the car being a BMW, etc...Dennis' listed price is firm, no extra fees, same for all vehicles. So it might not be higher or much higher than someone else you consider. Also, his checkup is as comprehensive as it gets, so you get what you pay for. Do yourself a favor and have him check out your vehicle before you buy it. Updated Review: We hired AutoDocs to inspect 2 cars for us. In both cases, Dennis found hidden damage (bad transmission, damaged suspension) that would have cost $1000's of dollars to repair if we had bought the cars. I think one seller really didn't know there was a problem with the transmission, but the other one went out of his way to fix body damage from an accident, but did not repair the mechanical damage. This is a review of Dennis the mechanic that helped to evaluate a used Mercedes I'm purchasing. If I could give Dennis 10 stars I would! Dennis spent probably 2 hours or longer thoroughly going over every part of the Mercedes including lifting the car off of the ground and removing a panel from the undercarriage. He found that the car had been repainted and that there was at one time damage to the passenger door, he also found 3 oil leaks in the engine bay by removing a panel that obscured the leaks, and he pointed out several electrical related issues. Even though I have a little experience with cars I never would have found any of the items Dennis found! Dennis also took the car on a test drive and drove it at various speeds, accelerations, and different road conditions. Dennis clearly loves his job!! He takes his time, and is really trying to find out as much as he possibly can to help you make a good buying decision. I think that Dennis charges a very fair price. I hired Dennis back in April to inspect a VW TDI 2015 that I wanted to make sure was represented properly by the dealer. My advice is 100% do NOT buy a used car without Dennis!!!! He is very thorough but just as important he is very fair to all parties, buyer and seller. I'm sure dealers probably don't like these inspections but when he was done the dealer even thought Dennis was fair and super thorough and even this dealer might use Dennis for an inspection. Dennis got into the cars computer and made sure there were no repair codes, he examined that paint w/ a tool that took measurements or the paint thickness, etc and even examined the anti freeze as to it's ability to work properly, examined the oil where possible, examined for frame damage, etc, etc, etc. It was a 46 page report. Bottom line for $245 you'd be crazy to buy a used car w/o him. And he was a nice guy, no nonsense, etc. He did a great job. I live in the Bay Area for reference and the car was in Carlsbad Ca. I didn't know Dennis but read reviews and hired him b/c of that and my initial conversation w/ him and have no other prior connection to him. I found Auto Docs Inspections while researching online about buying a car out of the area. I read recommendations to have any out-of-area used car inspected by a third party and though it first seemed like extra work and money, I realized for the amount I was about to invest, it was worth it. I had been in process of finalizing a sale from a dealership down in LA (I'm up in the bay area.) I almost went with another company, but then saw mention of Auto Docs on a post on line. I got ahold of them Saturday evening just before they closed, paid online, and they showed up the next morning at the dealership by 10:30am. The service was so quick, Dennis called me after he was done per my request and gave me a quick break-down of what he found. The car had been in a minor (non car-fax reported) head on collision and repainted in areas. I most likely would not have known this and it did impact my negotiations. It was also great to learn of all the things that are in excellent working condition on the car to put myself at ease. The report was so very detailed down to the up close photos all up underneath the vehicle and even testing of the paint to check for bondo. I had to pay extra for his travel as my location was out of his area but I feel like it was worth it to use someone reputable. The report seemed to be very thorough and honest, and was delivered to be same day via email. The only thing disconcerting to me is that my newly purchased vehicle has this "dying " issue. Like, it dies constantly. ..and that never came up in the report.. but the seller didn't mention it either. So... I don't know if this happened during transport from California to Texas. . Or if it was unnoticed in the inspection. I was looking to purchase a 20-21yr. old car, but I wanted a cream-puff. Getting something like this is like winning the lottery, it seems. I had actually come across a few other mobile mechanics who do inspections in the LA area before I came across Dennis and Auto Doc's. Here's what I found: 1. None of the other places check bodywork quantitatively (with instruments to measure paint thickness) 2. None of the other places check engine compression 3. None of the other places provide an easy to read checklist of different areas of the vehicle with grades on each and photos to illustrate detailed comments 4. The other 3 used car inspection mechanics I spoke with gave me generic advice about used vehicles, assuming I knew little to nothing about cars. One told me they would use their scanner to "scan codes" from the vehicle. Really? It's a 1994 vehicle, which means it's OBD1; you don't use your scanner, you use a paperclip and your eyes to look at a flashing check engine light. Another was surprised and even confused when I referred to catalytic converters as "cats", and told me "mechanics refer to them that way". The same guy (who is confusingly popular on Yelp) also refused to see a vehicle in downtown LA because he said it was an "unsafe area". If he gave me a little credit, perhaps he'd realize I'd done my homework; the vehicle in question was in Beverly Hills for 99% of its life before it was bought by someone downtown and essentially stored for the past 2 years- I've done my own CARFAX and Lexus Service History check, thank you. In contrast, Dennis is a humble, "just the facts" type of guy. He doesn't give you unsolicited advice, even if he knows 10x more than you do about cars (and his emails indicate he does, and I know a decent amount about cars myself). He doesn't brag. He doesn't even respond to compliments I've sent him on his very detailed reports, which I respect. He only helps when asked. But most of all.... 5. HIS REPORTS ARE INCOMPARABLE. If someone hasn't posted a picture of one of his reports, I will. NOBODY IN THE BUSINESS produces vehicle inspection reports with as much detail and useful information. In fact, I am looking at a car in Tucson, AZ so I found a used car inspection mechanic there. I sent him a copy of Dennis' report as an example of what I was looking for. He was so impressed that he emailed me back telling me the report I sent was excellent work and he asked just how much my mechanic was charging for this- turns out Dennis is charging $45 LESS than he was asking for a report with much less detail! 6. So, what did Dennis do for me? He pointed out several areas of major concern on a vehicle that looked mint to me in pictures, and was described as being "driven by an old lady, excellent condition" by the seller. As it turns out, it had received some very shoddy bodywork, and Dennis is the only used car inspection mechanic that could've pointed this out to me with proof to back it up, due to the sonar instrument he uses to check paint thickness; he even references these values vs. OEM factory paint specs. He also found dirty tranny fluid, oil leak, power steering leak, and rack & pinion leak that would require a pricey rack & pinion replacement. He detailed flaws with the car right down to old windshield wipers, headliner wrinkles (not tears), windshield chips (not cracks) and door carpeting that was losing its adhesive. This kind of detail in an inspection is unheard of, except in classic / exotic car evaluation. 7. Some reviews here say Dennis charges more than others, but I haven't found this to be true at all. Used car inspections, depending on the detail of the inspection, range from $80 - $300 in my experience. For the level of detail Dennis provides and NOBODY ELSE PROVIDES IN LA, I do not think less than halfway between these points is unreasonable in any way. Believe me, as someone who has owned used vehicles with many hidden problems that have cost me thousands of dollars over time, I consider his services a bargain. Dennis' service is seriously one in a million. In fact, I am using him to checkout a 2nd used car tomorrow. He is a class act, and I cannot recommend him more highly. read more

I researched pre-purchase mobile inspections and based on the reviews selected Auto Docs. Contacted Dennis and was impressed enough to have him check out a car for my daughter that we were interested in @ LA Auto Exchange. He was very timely , reasonable in price and pretty much relied on his inspection due to the fact that I was purchasing from a used car dealer who's rep was somewhat dubious. As a result we knew what we were getting and it enabled us to trust the car we were purchasing not based on a salesman but an independent dealer. All the major components were checked (mechanical, interior/exterior, wheels , tires) and were impressed with his ability to actually find that the left side had been repainted and detailed to how much body paint was applied. In addition the amount of detail and the photos were quite impressive- more than if I would of taken my car to a repair facility. It exceeded my expectations except for one minor miss and that was not caught on the inspection but with nearly 49 items checked it's still excellent. In addition, the inspection came with photos of everything- exterior all sides, interior (even the trunk) underneath the trunk (jack/tools) floormats, Front windshield VIN # plate to match the body tag with VIN, engine compartment, pictures of the fluids (Engine/Transmission/coolant/ brake/ , air cabin filter, battery posts, Volts, computer scan for fault codes, sonar paint gauge readings (9 /11 pictures were upside down) odometer readings pre-road/post road test and even the undercarriage- none the less thorough. The thing we found out was that the one tire that was different form the rest was over 10 years old and couldn't be repaired due to the age and it's failure which happened w/in two weeks of purchasing the car. All and all I would not hesitate to use them again though. Being that that tire had a DOT code this could of been reviewed when he noticed that it was different and could of prior to consummating the purchase insisted on the dealer replacing it since it could not be relied on. read more
