While I was driving to work yesterday, check engine and warning light came on and my gas motor (I drive a hybrid) decided not to work anymore. I had it towed to Auto Check Center to have someone take a look at the problem. I explained my situation to Nima who was very professional and he performed diagnostic tests right away. He told me that it could be a cooling problem and it will be ready tomorrow morning. I received a call in the morning that the car is ready. It was the worst experience of my life, I didn't know when a check engine light is on, the car would fail the smog test. The guy went on and did the smog test without telling me that it would fail. I needed a smog check on my vehicle; so I called at 3:33pm and asked if I brought my vehicle in by 4 if they would still be able to do a smog check, as they closed at 5. He asked me what year my vehicle was, and then said they would do it. When I arrived at 4, he asked me again what year my vehicle was; then the guy told me to come back Monday. While waiting I could hear the "tech" gassing my engine as he backed out. I immediately decided i would watch the test and did not trust them. I walked outside and observed as the tech then drove my car so fast into the dyno that he over shot it completely and had to noidily back my car into the dyno. Then the older technician conducting the smog check got in and did the test. All seemed normal till the end of the test where doing 25.56 MPH on the dyno he downshifted the very second the computer screen said to allow the wheels to stop. The downshift was so hard he nearly swerved my car off the dyno before it stopped. After the downshift he finished off by gassing the engine, turning it off, starting it again while holding the throttle open, and turning it off and repeating that complete cycle twice. All while the computer screen was still counting down on the screen where it was plainly saying "Stop Wheels" and absolutely nothing else. Since because of seedy dishonest pits like this and Frank's Auto of Santa Ana are why I generally always maintain and repair my cars myself but obviously SMOG checks are something I can't do at home. The Finale Follows: The older tech that did the test was struggling with the computer with my car's front tires still lowered in the dyno. Being a Civic Si, or any small car, there isn't too much wheel clearance and my car is 100.00% stock. The younger "tech" was by now explaining to me that the lift was not working and they couldn't get my car that passed to that Jerk's shock, out of their excuse for a shop. He then jumped in my car, opened the throttle and dropped the clutch 3 times making high pitched grinding noises till my car jumped itself out of the lowered smog dyno. Do not give these people business as you see they did everything to dishonestly create business by damaging my car and trying to fail my smog so they could undoubtedly try and sell me uneeded service. read more

The service was fast BUT the guy (older gentleman) tried to tell me that my smog check would cost me almost $80! They clearly advertised the smog at $39.75 for SUVs and another $8.25 for the certificate. I did not appreciate the increase in price because I am a girl! Ugh! read more

My son had to change belts and do some basic maintenance. After about 1 month car starts bucking and jerking. I took his car to Hiro's auto repair shop for the inspection. They figured out that during replacement of belts, the Auto Check Center's mechanic messed up the crank sensor by letting the wire to touch power steering pump's pulley. Now, my son have to pay for a new sensor and repair. We wouldn't trust Auto Check Center to do that repair again. If they have messed up the car during pretty basic and routine service, how badly they could mess it up again during this irregular issue that they have caused in first place!!! read more

VOID THIS UNSCRUPULOUS SHOP This company had a $19.95 coupon (along with the $8.25 transfer fee) in the penny saver so given their location I tried them. My car is a 1994 model. When I arrived they honored the coupon. However, 20 minutes after I arrived and my car passed the emissions test, I was told that because my car was 1994 or older they needed to do more tests as mandated by CA. It would cost me an additional $19.95 !!! They are guilty of two misleading things. They should have noted on the coupon that $19.95 was for 1995 or newer cars, and more important, INFORMED the customer when he arrives that additional tests are required for an additional charge. Neither was done. As soon as I entered their shop they KNEW my car was a 1994 model. When my car was finished I was informed that I had a bad engine oil leak, which I knew was not true. They offered to "fix" it of course to ring the cash register again. I was aware of a slight power steering leak and informed them are they sure they did not mean transmission oil and not engine oil? I caught them in a lie since there is a big difference in the appearance of both oils. This is an example of why auto repair places have bad reputations and are only out for a buck-dishonestly. read more

The price you pay to save a few bucks. I was intrigued by the coupon and recently moved into this area. The greeter (younger middle eastern guy) wasn't friendly at all. I asked how long the wait was and he said there were 3 people ahead of me. Another customer came in after with an Expedition. I waited while the first two cars were being smogged then they pulled in the Expedition! Maybe he had an appointment.. maybe.. after the Expedition was done, I was expecting my car to be next. I guessed incorrectly. I waited a total of 2 1/2 hours before I finally had enough. I asked for my keys and told him I was going to go somewhere else and he was glad to give me back my keys and paperwork. AWFUL!! I went in for their brake pad special - inclusive of a brake inspection and replacement of brake pads and necessary parts and labor for $89.95. They conveniently left out the additional charge to resurface the rotors, which is typically included in this maintenance service because not doing so will result in vibrations and noise. They glossed over this on the phone, and due to the guy's poor English, I thought he said he would be replacing my rear brakes for a total charge of $170. Turns out that they cleaned and adjusted my rear brakes for an additional $30 and upcharged the brake replacement to $140 to resurface the rotors. Being the silly, trusting, and naive girl I am, I paid them first and took a look at the receipt on the way home (we were extremely hungry and on our way to dinner). Upon noticing the hiccup, we went right back to hash it out with the technicians, but it was already too late - they didn't care in the slightest because I had already paid them. They tried to give me a freebie oil change because "I was unhappy." Like I'm really going to ever let them "inspect" my car again... yeah, right! read more

I''ve been here several times with several cars for smog checks. The price is very good, and all the people here are very pleasant. I have never had to wait more than an hour, and most times less than that. Today I also had some transmission work done and an air filter replaced. Again I thought the prices were fair, and all involved were friendly and professional. Insofar as the review regarding the Honda gas cap - I made the mistake of taking my car to the Honda dealer across the street. It wound up costing me $128 including the gas cap. I have no reason to do anything but recommend Auto Check Center. Try them with a small job if you are unsure, and then you can return for a bigger job if you like them. I found a fabulous $18.75 (+$8.75 for the cert) coupon for a smog check and since no one likes to overpay:) . . . I went to the Auto Check Center in Irvine. I'm a little wary of new auto places because I've been burned before by hidden fees and "cash only" policies. But this place exceeded my expectations. I arrived at 12:20pm with 3 kids in tow. The man at the counter took my coupon and registration form, and filled out a work order sheet with pricing that accurately represented the coupon. I asked how long the wait would be and he said at a minimum it would be an hour before they could get to my car. I mentioned I needed to run a couple more errands and he offered to put my work order in the queue, holding my place while I was gone. An hour later I was back and was told my car would be next. I mentioned to the man at the counter (a different man from the first) that I needed to be home by 2pm, with no room for even the slightest delay. He said that while they could possibly be done with time to spare, it wasn't worth me potentially being late. He offered to again hold my place in line and so I left to get my kids home. At 4:40pm I was back at the Auto Check Center. My car was quickly checked (and passed:), I paid $27 with a Visa and was on my way. I fully appreciate the straight forward business practices, the honest expectation management provided, and the willingness of the proprietor to work around my schedule. I plan on rewarding them with more of my business in the future. read more

I came here for the $19.75 coupon they seem to always have going and they did accept it (yea!). It was an extra $8.25 to send the DMV the results when you pass, so all told, the $28 total is absolutely reasonable! I didn't expect the long wait which was about an hour and a half, but the gentleman told me about it once I had filled out the paperwork. He was very nice and held the clipboard for me since I had my baby in the front carrier. Since it would be a long wait, he recommended hanging out at the nearby Panera when I asked if there was anywhere to go around there. It wasn't very far of a walk which was great since I brought my baby and my two-year-old. When I came back, he let me know that their credit card phone line was down (or something like that). Luckily I had cash and he was able to break a $100. I'm giving this place 3 stars because although the wait was long and they couldn't take my credit card, they told me about the long wait up front and the service attitudes were professional and friendly. Also, since there was a Panera nearby the wait was doable. If I hadn't brought cash, I presume there would have been a problem, so just be advised of that. Even so, it was probably a one-time fluke. The only other thing was that about 2.5 hours after I got the smog done, I tried to renew my vehicle registration online and the DMV still hadn't received the smog results (which are sent electronically). I called this place and they said I would have to try it again tomorrow. Boo. Not sure if this is how it works with every smog place but I'm glad my registration wasn't due the same day. I would not recommend this facility. They are not trustworthy. Both my cars failed smog. Got one fixed there and the other did not. The MANAGER wanted to put on a junk yard turbo charger for $975.00 with 3 month warrenty...am I crazy or us this crazy? Other mechanics agreed with me. He flagged my certificate so now I am going to have a hard time getting a certificate without major repairs and $$$. I told him I don't trust him and would nevet be back. Guess he thinks everyone will take his word...DON'T. ... Get second opinion. read more

Auto Check Center did an excellent job of locating a difficult vapor leak that was causing a "Check Engine" light on our 2004 Lexus. They performed the necessary repairs, ran a smog check, the car passed and we were issued the certificate. The work was performed ahead of schedule and the price charged was as quoted even though additional parts were needed. They really strive to provided excellent customer service by keeping you informed of the status of your repairs, and making sure you are completely satisfied. DON'T BRING YOUR CAR HERE!... I brought my car there "chevy" for a diagnosis only. I informed them what i thought the cause of a slight knocking sound in my drivetrain was and asked them to check this first and then move on to something else. They insisted on checking other area's of my car and finally came to the conclusion that is was my timing. They told me it would be about $100 to adjust the timing. Then 30 min later asked me to come in and look at the car. When i walked in the door they handed me my keys and said they can't fix it. "take your car to the dealer" I thought this was strange and asked them what they did and they said nothing. As i got in my car and drove down the street the slight knock was now a loud CLANK. The car was un drivable. Once i went back in to complain they acted like they did me a favor since they didn't charge me! Needless to say I forgot to thank them. Im sure my lawyer will when the get the bill for the repairs. read more

The worst car shop I have ever been to. I came here on a recommendation from my father. it cost my wife 800 dollars to get her car "fixed". Her rim was dented so it caused the steering wheel to shake as she drove. The first time they got the car, they didn't even replace the wheel. The problem wasn't fixed. They charged us 600 dollars for some part they said needed replacement. Probably didn't need to be replaced. I then called them to let them know they didn't fix anything that we told them needed to be fixed. they apologized and did not charge any more labor for the additional repairs. Once they were done the 2nd time, we noticed the check engine light was still on. When we asked why it was still on they told us they didn't know but the car ran fine. Here we are a few months later and we need to get the car smoged and it fails automatically if the check engine light is on. Thanks for stealing 800 dollars from me auto check. I'll NEVER come back here and neither will anyone else from my family, even my father who has been taking cars here for over 10 years. read more
