Took my 2018 XC60 in because the brakes were squealing. The guys at Austin Vol-Tech fixed the squealing but discovered an issue with the front rotors. They said it was possible that the issue would fix itself. They suggested that I take my car home and if I was experiencing any rotor "shake" to bring it back to the shop for repair at no cost to me. Well, I had to take it back to Austin Vol-Tech and they ended up replacing both front and rear rotors and also the front brake pads - at no charge for the brake work and no charge for the loaner car. THIS is what an honest and reputable auto repair shop does for their customers. Long story short, I took my 01' S60 t5 in for a battery drain issue, they charged me $150 for my troubles just to unplug the alarm fuse. Two weeks later now my OBDII port is not working (It worked prior) and I need an inspection soon. Dave, the old Owner sold Voltech. Heads up. Do not buy a car from these guys unless you enjoy dropping cash on frequent repairs. Their cars have bad history (mechanical/wrecks) records and they don't like to talk about it. Each car has had some form of damage and undergone a temporary "fix". Example: I had them "rebuild" a 1990 240 Wagon for me with upgrades. Within the first 30 days of owning the car I had to have it towed back to them 3 different times for 3 separate unrelated repairs. First was a total transmission replacement, next an electrical issue, and then the fuel system/pump died. I also was told that the A/C had been upgraded and was working like a dream; both of which were very far from the truth. It doesn't stop there...1 year into owning the car the motor went out and needed to be completely replaced. All-in-all I paid for this car twice in the first year of owning it due to repairs. I also looked at a 2000 S70 Turbo that was oddly being pushed on me as "the" car to buy...I was even considering purchasing the car until the turbo blew out during my test drive leaving the car crippled and in need of a major repair. I trust these guys with my car. I have a strong mechanical background, and have watched the way this shop has been to me for the past several visits before penning this review. Dave has been both accurate and fair with his estimates for repair. He has listened to my description of noises and other symptoms and diagnosed many of my problems on the spot, turned those into estimates and put the shop to work for me. Before they do the work he calls with updated estimates and the final diagnosis for approval to commence repairs. They do all this while getting me into a loaner car for the day. The shop has delivered consistently, with same-day turnaround, on several major repairs including pcv service and replacement of parts, engine mount replacement, air conditioning service and replacement of condenser etc., suspension components and codes and sensors and more. I've poked my head into the shop enough to know that the guys are smart, informed, and polite and very busy. Before they expanded you could chat with some of the mechanics if you were lucky. I have watched them move and now expand to an additional shop which now includes service for other brands. They will continue to be my Volvo mechanic shop for the foreseeable future. I had been in the market for an old Volvo 240 Wagon for some time when I happend upon Vol-Tech, which not only service all makes of Sweeds, but refurbish and sell them too. Now, I have to admit that when I first looked into their inventory, I was a bit shocked at the seemingly high pricing of their used vehicles, especially the 240's on the lot. They were substantially higher than other listings in the area, but as I was soon to find out, there are some VERY good reasons for this. I contacted David Trueper, who handles sales for Vol-Tech and is a very nice fellow to talk to. He worked with me over several weeks on finding the perfect wagon for me and kept me in the loop on new stock coming in. I finally put my focus on an '89 baby blue 240 wagon from his inventory and came back several times throughout the refurbishing process to check it out. Finally, a few weeks ago, I pulled the trigger and picked it up...and the wagon has been a delight ever since. Now, especially when we're talking about 20+ year old cars, there are going to be issues. It is inevitable, no matter what you drive. This is where Vol-Tech pricing comes in. If you go out and buy one of these old gems privately, in most cases you can expect to drop more cash on immediate repairs to make them daily drivers. Also, there are the unknown factors involved in buying privately. With Vol-Tech, who have been in business for YEARS, you can rest assured that David and his mechanic have gone through the car thoroughly, and have taken care of those issues which you would otherwise need to take care of yourself. On my first test drive, I even mentioned a couple of issues, and by my next visit they had been taken care of. I've had the vehicle now for several weeks and "Sven" is everything I expected in an old 240. Delightfully quirky. As mentioned before, it is a 20 year old vehicle and for me to expect it to be absolutely flawless would be a flawed mentality. In fact, I had a brake pad issue in one of the wheels, took it back to David, and he took care of it for me at no charge. So, all in all, a good experience. Did I spend more than I wanted to? Well, no not really because there is a peace of mind there that I wouldn't have if I had bought a car privately for less $. There is a reason Vol-Tech has been in business for as long as it has. My family has 4 old Volvo's and they break down. All the time. When our old auto shop was scheming and lying ( look, its true!) we finally switched auto repair shops to Austin Vol-Tech, and I am really glad we did. The staff is friendly and quick. they identify the problem and are very logical with their assessment of which problem is serious and which could wait, and the cars are done in record time. While this repair shop is pricey ( really, whats not these days,)I do have the feeling that they are actually in it to fix cars- not to find secret problems with my car to make me pay even more dough. ( Paranoid, who? Not me :) So if you have a Volvo and are located anywhere near the north Austin boonies, I would stop off at Vol-Tech. If you have a Volvo that needs any attention or repair, go here. Any Volvo owner knows they can be tricky - real tricky. Took my XC90 in for a 90K service maintenance; also had a check engine light that 3 other shops could not address/fix. I ended up needing a new fuel pump (ouch) among several other things that were important to fix. Luckily Dave (the service mgr) was able to get my warranty company to sign off on the majority of the repairs and worked with the inspector to get it all approved. Got my car back in 2 days, riding like new. 2 days later, on the way back from San Antonio (with my family and baby in the car), car stalls out on I-35 (luckily I was able to sputter on service road back home)...scary. I called Dave and VTS and explained the situation, he got me in immediately the next day with a loaner. HERE IS WHERE THEY GO FROM GOOD TO GREAT IN MY BOOK.... After stall out on I35 incident; the car was driving normally - the computer diagnostics were reading normal. Most shops would say "it is driving fine, computer diagnostics are fine" then give the car back as is and say come back if it happens again. Not VTS or Dave; I assured him of what happened and he PERSONALLY DROVE MY XC90 FOR TWO DAYS to and from his house and the shop to troubleshoot the problem. Long story short, it was a faulty new fuel pump and VTS ended up replacing it along with another piece (which was covered). Mistakes happen, in this case it was a bad piece of equipment, not VTS - yet they handled with a sense of urgency and great detail to ensure I was going to be safe and in reliable transportation. They are not the cheapest but better than the dealership costs and after all you get what you pay for - I am glad I found them and will be coming back for all my Volvo needs. read more

I've only been here once, but I can assuredly say that I trust this place. (And this is saying a lot for a person who wrote off every car mechanic as a scam artist.) Took it in and they fixed up my Volvo XC90 for $335 where Roger Beasley tried to charge me $500+ for the exact same fix. And where Roger Beasley Volvo informed me that I had an additional $2k worth of repairs that needed to be immediately addressed, Vol-Tech told me that the issues were minor and didn't need to be addressed until later on and to start saving up for the repairs because they're pricey. The kicker: Vol-Tech's "pricey" was still (an honest) fraction of Roger Beasley's quote. This isn't saying their prices are super low, but compared to other dealerships/mechanic shops Vol-Tech is reasonable, which is all I'm really asking for. For you Volvo owners out there, this is the place for repair. Especially on older Volvo's we know they require perhaps more than the average amount of care. Great cars, super safe, good performance, but not exactly Japanese dependability. Such is the tradeoff for inexpensive European used cars. With that as background, I can tell you that I have been taking my 99 S70 to Dave Snyder at AVT for about three years now. I have had some major work done there, including transmission replacement. THESE GUYS ARE NO NONSENSE, STRAIGHT SHOOTERS. If they diagnose a problem, it is accurate. If the problem is not as severe as what they thought, they are pleased to give you the good news. They will go the extra mile to find ways to make the repair as economically as possible, without sacrificing quality. Seriously, I trust these guys to give me the straight word. From Google Post April 2017 I own a rare low mileage IPD modified 2007 S60R and have been doing business with Vol-Tech for 4 years. Recently I was out of state and was stranded with a blown head gasket. When I brought it to a local dealership to have it fix they failed to discover that there was a cracked piston sleeve after reassembly. Throughout incident I was continually on the phone with Dave and his team getting advice and direction in getting a refund from the dealership for the work done. I was able to recover a good portion of the dealership charge with Dave's help. The Vol-tech team quickly located a used S60R engine in their inventory of salvaged cars to replace my engine. Before I could even get the car back to Texas they had an engine ready to be installed. They completed the replacement in four days. The dealership in the other state had my car for two weeks and never fixed it or apologized for their mistakes. The price they charged was fair. This was a big job and it involves ripping down two engines to a long block state. This is a time consuming process and moving all useable components from the damaged engine to the new-used engine was done. When I received the car back it appeared to have a sensor issue that was quickly diagnosed and replaced. The car now runs better than before the mishap. The shop also issued a warranty on the used engine and their work for six months or 3,000 miles. So ask yourself can a dealership provide this the level of service? November 2017 Back again for another visit: The ABS brake system was sending codes that it needed to be replaced. This is a big cost, new its $1,300. Dave said if I can't afford that expense he could ship it to a rebuilder in Canada and will take two weeks and about $700.00 installed a savings of $600.00. Way to go Dave. The shop made the car drivable for that two weeks. Its an ouch factor but not a second mortgage. Hay its a performance car that's 10 years old. Still a fun car to own. I bought my 2007 Volvo XC90 3.2L from Vol-Tech about three years ago and have taken it to them for all of my repairs since. My husband also has a Volvo (a C70) that we take to this shop when needed. Dave and the team have always taken great care of my car and are always very honest with me regarding what needs to be done as well as how long I can wait before something needs to be fixed. There have been a couple of times I have brought my car in for repairs and they have fixed small things that I hadn't even mentioned - IE: my windshield fluid reservoir and my fender that was knocked in by someone in a parking lot - all free of charge! I never write reviews so this is a big deal for me. Back in 2014 I had an internship in San Antonio, but I lived in Austin. Some family friends were able to lend me their old 1991 Volvo 240 for the commute, and by the end of the Summer I had fallen in love. Naturally, I bought it from them rather than having to return it. Over the next two years the car stayed generally reliable, but there were issues here and there. Being a poor student, I did the absolute minimum necessary to keep it in working order. The first few times I had problems, I brought it to random mechanics who would usually just end up making things worse. Eventually, I did a little research and found out about Austin Vol-Tech. As a student, Austin Vol-Tech was there for me to keep my car running without breaking the bank. A few times the car simply wouldn't start, or died while driving. A quick tow to Austin Vol-Tech followed by a $200-$300 repair would have me driving again the next day. Perhaps I got lucky with mostly cheaper parts breaking, but regardless, I always felt that Dave and his team were charging me a fair price and doing solid work. Beyond student life, I kept my car as my daily commuting vehicle. No longer did the car simply expand my freedom, it also played a crucial role in me being able to fulfill my responsibilities. I went back to Dave and his team for more repairs, some necessary, and some for convenience. Every time they've provided me with a loaner car so that I can get around while my car is out of commission. Thus far, they've never done wrong by me, and I always get my car back in what seems to be better condition than I left it. Finally, I recently had to say goodbye to Austin Vol-Tech as my career takes me to San Francisco. Leading up to the move, I was planning to try to sell my car. But in that last week or so, I decided to keep it. Once more, with only a day's notice, I brought it in to Austin Vol-Tech where Dave and his team did their long trip check in addition to some other small, final repairs. They cleared me for the trip and over 2000 miles later, here I am in California. My car feels like it runs better than when I bought it, and that's due in large part to the efforts of Dave and his team at Austin Vol-Tech. Buyer beware INDEED!! I am currently experiencing the same situation as Dave and Barbara in this string. The sales guy sold me a 2005 S40 as "the car" and went to great lengths to tell me about how they stand behind their cars and how well they "go through" them before they are sold. So I buy the car and before my first oil change, it's been back to them twice with major problems... (Towed in with the engine overheating... Then the onboard computer fried)...over $1,000 in repairs...Now their story is "well, you bought a car with high miles, what do you expect?" I paid above market price for their "quality" product plus an extra $1400 for an extended warranty which, so far has been worthless. Don't be fooled by their "awe shucks" good old boy routine. I took my bosses Volvo in for a small cosmetic facelift of the interior- around the center console and gear shift. One of the parts was grey (the only color volvo made in this part for the car model- besides the wood finish which was over $600). The grey didn't match the the rest of the interior at all. So Dave and his team painted the part black which made a world of difference. We have used Dave and his team a few times and they are lovely to work with. I've had 2 Volvos that have been kept alive via Austin Vol-Tech Services. The repair dept. is very good - always fix what needs to be fixed and the estimates are right on most of the time. Two things to note: 1. No one that works there drives a Volvo. 2. You will almost never take the car in to have it repaired and get it back without them finding something else that needs to be repaired. 3. DON'T EVER BUY A CONVERTIBLE WITH A CLOTH TOP. Just don't, please - take my word for it. That being said, this is a great place to MAINTAIN your Volvo and if you are prepared to shell out $6K+ a year to do this this is the place to go. read more

Three things you need to know about Voltech: they're honest, empathetic, and practical. My family has been with this shop since 2000. Over the years, we've bought three beautiful cars from them, because they absolutely stand behind the cars they sell. I've been told up front, "I'll never have that model in that year because it's simply not reliable." They don't have exactly the car you're looking for? Let them know, and they'll keep an eye out until it turns up. Voltech has told me when a repair can safely wait until payday. To keep costs down, they've suggested repurposing a part from a different Volvo. Those squeaky (non-Volvo) brakes that were driving me crazy? Turns out they have half a pad left. I have been having trouble with my 2004 Volvo for about 6 months. I took it to another Volvo "expert" who replaced 2 expensive parts and my check engine light was still on. After several attempts to find the problem, I was told to go to a dealer because they couldn't identify the problem. I found Volvo Austin Vol-Tech and made an appointment, dropped off my car, picked up a rental and by mid afternoon I had a $10 part, plus labor bill that turned off the check engine light and allows my car to run as it should again. I've had repairs done on 2 Volvos, one of which I purchased from Vol-Tech. I've never ever had a problem with the repairs - Dave always sticks to his quotes and even though the repairs are expensive they don't try to trick you like the Roger Beasley. The used car purchase process was less than pleasant. AFTER I'd signed all the papers and written a check for the car I was told that Vol-Tec offered a warranty on the car on repairs, leading me to believe this was an offer they were required to do by law but didn't want to do for this particular car. The final price after tax, title, license etc. etc. etc. came out to about 2K more than what I'd CLEARLY stated was my MAXIMUM price. I felt taken but that's the used car scam BS that one always has to deal with. In short, if you need repairs Vol-Tech is the place to go, if you're buying a used car look elsewhere. read more

I took my car in because of my alternator. First thing that annoyed me was when I called on my lunch I couldn't even find out about my car because David was on lunch. I asked if anyone else can help me but no just him, so I had to wait until my 3 o clock break. Then when I did get in touch with him, he told me about a whole host of problems including my headlights and rattling off prices. I found the headlights shocking because they were working before I brought it in but if my alternator was over charging then it makes sense it blew them out. I refused the repairs knowing I could get them done cheaper elsewhere. FAST FORWARD I finally get my light bulbs replace and was told they can't put them in because my headlight were off alignment (or whatever the terminology was) that one was just screwed out, the clamp for it was missing and there was black electrical tape down there. WHAT?! So when I called David he tried to shift the blame on the other shop. Not only did the other shop not charge me a diagnostic fee because they couldn't properly diagnose it, they refereed his business. They have absolutely NOTHING to gain for messing with my lights they're are an alternator specialty shop not saying they can't work on lights but again it's not what they are in business for. Then when I dropped the bomb they were working BEFORE I brought them in he hung up on me. Needless to say I filed a complaint with the BBB. read more
