Excellent service and a great experience. I have an older Rega P5 that still sounds great but was in need of a new cartridge and general servicing. I found them on a quick search and called them up to see if they could help. They are an authorized Rega dealer so it was exactly what I was looking for. Took it in and they did a complete service: general cleaning, lubrication of components, de-oxify contacts, etc. I chose a Rega ND7 cartridge as the replacement and that was installed as well. They do a very thorough listening test to ensure it's all dialed in optimally. I got my P5 home and....oh my!! Absolutely MASSIVE improvement in sound quality and couldn't believe it sounded this good with the cartridge not even broken in. They do excellence work. However, they gave me an estimate of $250 ti restore a vintage Onkyo Turntable CP-1015A, which I picked up at a Good Will store in the North Austin area for $25. I wasn't that emotionally invested in spending that kind of money on something that I don't even use anymore. It was much cheaper for me I just donate the to Austin Stereo Service. By the way, I already have another vintage all in one unit which has the AM/FM, cassette plsyer, CD player and a phonograph on top with built in speakers. Someday, after I relocate back to the East Coast, I would be willing to go find a nice Technique turntable. Eventually, I will be leaving the central Texas area. Austin Stereo is the best! I was having some distortion issues on a Technics turntable I just bought - aside from being concerned that it was set up wrong. They looked at it right when I arrived, checked over the cartridge alignment and tonearm settings, and pretty quickly surmised it was my cheap pre-amp causing the issue! So, I have a talent for finding hobbies and collecting things that are semi-obscure, semi-pointless, semi-expensive, and with repairs needed that are semi-beyond my skill and knowledge levels. Now I've discovered vintage audio equipment. So AWESOME!! I have bought a few pieces from various sources, none of them acquired in "sound" condition. I am currently auditioning stereo repair shops to regularly siphon my checking account (since I seem to be unable to stop buying receivers from the 70s. Um, how many can I listen to at once?), and Austin Stereo Service I think just landed the job. I brought my Bose 360 turntable in for an overhaul, and they recognized it right away as a Bose-branded Pioneer PL-12. Then the guy gave me (off the top of his head, mind you) the Pioneer parts telephone number so I could buy some of the easier-to-install parts myself. It's just two guys with ponytails and Egon Spengler double glasses in a room filled with speakers, receivers, amps, equalizers, and turntables who love to work on stereos and talk about them. TL;DR: expensive and worth it. They refurbished my 1971 Sansui 555A amp. OMG! It is way better than new. They did something equivalent to the Leestereo mods you can find on the web. If you just want the contacts cleaned and some caps replaced, go elsewhere. These guys will dig into your equipment and completely rebuild it with modern components, including transistors. These guys are real experts. And they love making things sound great. I suspect they can't help themselves. My stereo now has maybe 3x the power and fidelity the original excellent amp had. I was a bit shocked at the price, a bit more than the estimate, but after listening to the result, I'm happy to have paid it. I'm happy every time I listen to it now. You could not buy something that sounds this great now without spending a lot more. My 50-year-old amp lives again and better than ever. A happy customer. read more

Joe replied to my email about my 30 year-old Technics turntable with some incredibly helpful trouble-shooting suggestions -- the kind of pragmatic things that a real expert knows in his bones. This led me to a realization that enabled me to fix the problem myself (by cleaning 30 years of storage corrosion off the leads from the cartridge). He knows his stuff when it comes to vintage electronics. Most recently dropped off a Pioneer monster receiver (SX-1250) for full restoration. Can't wait to get that window shaker back! Absolutely awesome service. I walked in off the street with a powered speaker that needed a volume pot cleaning. He put it right up on the workbench in the storefront, opened it up, cleaned the pot, tested it, and put it back together while I waited, watched, and learned. I had gone to Bond's the day before (my unfavorable review of Bond's is on their page) and was asked to pay $50 minimum in advance and warned (before a Bond's tech even looked at it) that the pot would likely need to be changed for more money and more time (at least two weeks). Austin Stereo Service not only did the work for a fraction of just the price that Bond's wanted as an up-front minimum, but I got to go home with my working speaker. It's just really great when you get this kind of service. I'd give them more than five stars if I could. I'm not an audiophile, but if I ever need a home audio setup, I'm going vintage, and I'm going to Austin Stereo Service for it. Brought in an old Realistik turntable that I acquired from my father-in-law. It was kind of a mess - hadn't been maintained in decades, had an imbalanced tonearm and speed issues. Austin Stereo fixed it up good as new - they even repaired the hinges on the dust cover. The repair cost was pretty reasonable for the amount of work that they did. They were a little backlogged when we brought in the turntable (the repair took 8 weeks), but it was worth the wait. I went to Austin Stereo this afternoon to sell some vintage stereo equipment. I have been corresponding with Joe since mid-February about this transaction and finally made it to the shop (I am in San Antonio). Joe was extremely gracious. He helped me bring the items into the shop, and asked for about an hour or so to check the equipment out. My wife and I returned a bit later, and received what we considered was a very fair offer for the equipment. Joe tells you upfront that if you want top dollar, you need to sell it yourself on E-Bay or Craig's List. These guys are in business, and will spend money tuning up the stuff, marketing it, etc.. I do not have the time or patience to deal with numerous "window shoppers" at my personal residence. More importantly, I felt that my "stuff" was in the right place, and would eventually find a good home. The equipment brought me many years of enjoyment, and honestly, it was a bit sad to let it go. i bought an old stereo receiver here about 3 years ago: a beautiful 1976 harmon kardon 330b. i came in one day and asked if there was anything i could look at, and the guy held up a zip-lock bag full of old capacitors. "just spent the afternoon fixing this one." he proceeded to play some billie holiday to test it out, and i fell in love with the thing. what a first impression. i've been coming back every few months to check out the inventory. the place is basically a museum of sound. you have to negotiate stacks of receivers, subs and turntables if you want to get a closer look at anything on the shelves. and there's always some ridiculously grandiose dream hi-fi system set up by the front window playing wonderful music on godzilla speakers. i came in today to have him look at my turntable and he tweaked it for me for free in less than 2 minutes. great service read more

My record player is part of my heart. When we moved and it no longer worked right, I was crushed. In comes Yelp and trying to find someone who can help me. Decided to stop by here and see if they could help me. The guy comes out and checks it out and found the issue right away. First he balanced it then he saw my tip was smashed; something that's hard to see with the human eye. He showed me with a magnifying glass. Then he asked what kind of needle tip I wanted - the cheap or the expensive one. We talked about the differences and he made one for me. I was a little anxious thinking it was going to cost me a bunch of money since he balanced my player (gave me a lesson on it) plus making a needle head for it but he ended up just charging me for the needle! I was SO excited and was up and running that night. Highly, highly recommended. Great price, good customer service. read more
