While we're good at the "playing in the dirt" part of gardening, laying out an organized plan, with the right plants in the right spots while maintaining a good design ethic is not our forte. In addition, though, we love doing a lot of the work. We genuinely enjoy digging holes, planting plants, and watching our landscape take form. So, we set out to find a "design only" service that could match our vision for this new space, and found Michelle Austen and Red Sun Landscape Design here on Yelp. I'm usually a little wary of businesses that have all 5-star reviews with no negatives listed, because they sometimes turn out to be falsely inflated, or fake reviews that don't match real experience with the company. Our experience with Michelle proved why she has all five star reviews - she's simply great to work with! To echo the other reviews, Michelle met with us on several occasions, taking our input on style, plant preferences, design goals (we wanted to incorporate multiple outdoor living areas, a pergola, and space for a hot tub, among other needs), and installation plans, and then synthesized all of that input into a plan that full matched our desires and expectations. She included a number of practical elements, as well, including a dry creek bed that follows the natural swale in the yard, which should insure that water flowing through the yard will not disturb our finished beds, but also won't prevent water from flowing out of the yard successfully. She kept accurate deadlines, and communicated very well along the way, and provided a good amount of input into efficiently installing the resulting plan. Her final plan includes a number of great details, including the area each bed covers in square feet, the linear foot of edging required, etc, making estimating costs for installation a breeze. We can't wait to start making this plan a reality in our yard! I can recommend Michelle's work without reservation.

Per her recommendation, we worked with Austin Gardeners, who were incredible. We changed a few things about Michelle's original design but kept a lot of the inspiration in tact. So big shout out to Michelle for her help with our backyard transformation!!

I originally made an…read moreappointment with them for a few days later to just have my sprinklers checked after the winter. Then I went to turn on my sprinklers so they would have some water while I waited and found my sprinkler control panel was a mess and resetting it didn't fix the problem. I told On The Spot Sprinkler Repair about this and they recommended I got an inexpensive replacement sprinkler control system from Amazon which then arrived the same day. I told the repair service that I was now in a bit of a rush since I went from maintenance needs to a completely broken system, and they squeezed me in the next day which was EXTREMELY nice of them! Oh, and it turns out that my sprinklers were fine after the winter, I just had a busted control system -- perhaps from an electrical surge so I am now protecting the system with a UPS/surge protector setup. (I had an old UPS that I was going to throw away but it had plenty of juice left in it for such a little control system.) All communications with them were very fast and professional and On The Spot Sprinkler Repair was very knowledgeable which is not always the case with repair people.

Previously, Sprinkler Medics had completely dropped the ball on assessing our needs and charged us a fair amount for installing a pressure reducing valve which they said would correct the problem. That didn't even come close. I have now moved On The Spot to the top of my list of sprinkler repair companies. It's also nice that Stan is the guy to do the work and also the guy you talk to when you call to set things up. No bureaucratic middle men or women. You get the personal touch with On The Spot.

Good design work / overpriced maintenance…read more We hired Ground & Garden to do a large (to us) landscaping job for about $70k - new sod, masonry, new decorative plants, etc. We worked closely with Kate Higdon and were generally happy with the result. One small complaint is that the plants they selected to frame our front walk have been yellowing/dead-looking all summer. At the end of the project, I realized they didn't install weed barriers. So I asked Kate about it and she said they don't do that and our beds would have to be hand-weeded. Ok, I thought, they're the experts. She recommended we get quarterly or monthly gardening care (weeding, pruning, mulch, fertilization, aeration, ant control, irrigation adjustments, etc) and their maintenance crew could get us a quote. Getting a quote from their maintenance crew was a bit of a pain, but when I eventually did, I learned that they, in fact, do NOT offer quarterly or monthly gardening service unless we ALSO hire them to also mow and blow our lawn weekly... total price $644 per month. For a 2,000 sqft yard. In case you didn't fall over upon reading that, that's a lot. On the plus side, they have uniformed technicians, I guess.
