We just bought a 1925 Craftsman home in Thornton Park and both of the front doors were out of alignment - one scraped the floor, the other wouldn't open and the locks didn't work even after having a few locksmiths try to fix them. We called Austin Historical and they came out to assess and were able to schedule our project manager, Carmelo, pretty quickly. Carmelo was amazing! He removed the doors and figured out how to make them work so we could preserve the originals. The lock was SO tricky. We had to buy a new reproduction doorknob set and it was quite a project to get it working. Carmelo was diligent and somehow performed a miracle and got everything working smoothly. He was super nice, very communicative with his schedule, even helped me source the new doorknob on a weekend! When we get around to fixing some of the windows, we will definitely call Austin Historical. I can only hope Carmelo is our project manager again!! read more

Five years ago we decided to put our first Dallas, TX restaurant in a mid 1800's building. Why did we wait five years to write our review? Read on..... Our installation faced two big challenges. Historically accurate fencing for our outside patio dining area and slate flooring for our interior dining area. We had a very specific challenge regarding our flooring that most contractors told us could not be overcome (in the long term). We were advised by every contractor we spoke to that placing slate flooring (which is what we wanted for it's durability) over a historic building floor that was 1/2 cement and 1/2 wood, would result in cracking at the seams and eventual floor replacement. With regards to our historically correct patio dining fencing, we soon found out that finding fencing that would historically compliment our mid 1830's building was a much bigger cost wise challenge than we thought. All the other contractors who bid on our job were keen on building fencing from scratch, a very costly proposition. We chose AHR because they were the only company that were confident that they could overcome both our flooring and fencing challenges AND still hit our budget constraints. AHR was confident that we could get the slate we wanted without any complications. (Just to be sure, we ordered a skid of extra slate in case they were wrong). They were also confident they could "find" the proper fencing for our patio dining area. THE BOTTOM LINE: AHR found the correct fencing from a historic restoration supply company that at first looked pretty much like a pile of rubble to us. However, their refinishing team magically created a beautiful historic fence from that previous pile of rubble. With regards to our slate floor, they used a revolutionary (we called it revolutionary because clearly no other contractor knew about it) bonding underfloor to assure the floor was able to move to the different contracting of cement and wood and still remain properly bonded without cracking the slate flooring at the seam where the cement and wood met. And why did we wait 5 years to post our review? You remember that slate floor that everyone said would never last? Well, we mop it every day, it withstands heavy commercial traffic 7-days a week and now after 5-years it looks the same as they day it was installed! And as for the slate at that wood/cement seam... to this day, NO ONE can tell where that infamous seam is! Anyone interested in a skid of slate flooring? We have plenty in storage! read more

I found this team to be extremely professional, and they really did deliver work of exceptional quality. I've done a lot of work with contractors over the years, and generally speaking even when their work is really good, they don't have what you might consider to be a sensitivity to being in or around someone's home. Whether that's tromping through flower beds, backing over sprinklers, or just leaving a mess behind them, this team was there several times and they always treated my home like it was theirs. They closed the front door (they didn't leave it open or slam it behind them), they protected the floors, they asked how I wanted things to be done, they carefully cleaned and cleared their work areas when they were done, and they were always respectful of my house (which is 85 years old and not only deserves some respect for it's age, it needs to be treated tenderly. They really have an eye for the aesthetic, and they know their business. I'm very sorry to read that exceptionally negative review here on Yelp - I can't imagine what kind of experience that person had but this team did two separate projects for me and I found them to be exceptionally good. read more

We used Austin Home Restorations to renovate our Master Bedroom in our 1920's house, and are very happy we did. It was our goal to match the renovated master bedroom with details found throughout the house. Despite some of these details being miniscule and painstaking to recreate, Austin and the team pulled them off flawlessly. The overall product exceeded our expectations and is now our favorite room in the house! What I found with this company was not a typical construction team, but a group of true artisans that take their craft very seriously. There was not an endless stream of subcontractors running through our home; most of the work was self-performed by AHR employees, and they were all great. Further, our project manager Mark was always very polite, kept us informed of daily work, maintained a very clean job-site, and stayed on budget and schedule. Huge Disappointment! Takes advantage of people. Project: Build Custom Kitchen Cabinets, Bathroom Cabinet , Custom closet, and 1 Custom Media piece. Problems: - Failure to Honor Price Quotes - Failure to Complete Projects in a Timely Manner - Failure to Show Up when Scheduled, with No Call or Explanation - Failure to Communicate - Failure to Install Project Correctly or Take into Account Functionality Examples: - No Call No Show for installation day - when we called the response was something else came up - Cabinets were supposed to be ready in August and were not ready till early October - Once Installation started all pieces were not complete and therefore delayed finishing the project - when we asked why response was always "they need one more coat of paint." - Installation required them to come out over 7 times to complete the job - Installation of Cabinets were not level which once again required us to ask them to come out again to re-install. - Did not honor Price Quote for Media Piece - sent someone from their team and he gave price of $500. When we called owner (Scott) to ask when they could start price increased to $750. We argued and final price was $650. Still $150 more than original quote. - Media piece took 3 months to make when told it would be 1 month - Cabinet above Microwave was made to specs. But did not take the time to realize that microwave was too high. When we asked them to make a pice to lower it, the obliged but asked that someone from contractor team was there for installation. Contractors team installed the microwave with Austin Home Restoration (AHR) team member present. But team member only helped to lift microwave. A unexpected bill for $175 showed up 3 days later for the piece of wood (29 inches long and 8 inches high), painted white and labor of lifting the microwave with someone else not from AHR. When we sent letter that the bill was too much $ and we never agreed to that. Owner sent the bill again certified mail with no explanation. - Communication was nonexistent. Unless we called or asked when things were going to be completed or when they were coming back to finish the job, we did not hear from them. - There are more examples of the poor customer service... but these highlights should demonstrate the lack of professionalism and business etiquette that you will experience when working with Austin Home Restoration. It is a stressful business relationship that only seeks to take as much money from you as possible. read more

I have an old 1920's Craftsman bungalow and another contractor that worked on the house didn't pay attention to period details at all. Scott at Austin Home Restorations, however, was a breath of fresh air when I called him to talk about restoring and reglazing my old, original windows. I knew immediately that I wanted to work with him because he really cares about old house details and seemed very knowledgeable. He also listens well and follows through on what he says he'll do. His contract was a fair price and the work was absolutely worth it. His team is polite, easy to work with, and skilled. They act like a little family. The windows turned out amazing; they look custom. Bonus: they'll keep for a long time with proper maintenance. I liked what they did so much, I had them do a couple of other projects including plastering a ceiling and painting the exterior of our house. Pretty much anything we decide to do from here on out will be with Austin Home Restorations.
