Our old knife sharpener closed shop awhile back and we've been limping along with dull implements. I noticed Austin Blades on my way to work and decided to give it a shot. I dropped off 7 knifes (chef's, cleaver, serrated and paring) and a pair of scissors at lunch. I could have waited 15 minutes, but chose to pick them up in the evening. The store was very clean and brightly lit. The owner was very friendly and professional. My sharpened knives were carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and boxed up when I returned. The price seemed reasonable ($1/inch). After a quick rinse and wipe down at home, I put them to use making dinner. I only cut chicken and veggies, but they were very sharp. We'll be back! read more

My wife has a favorite Japanese steel chopping cleaver that she uses for every meal she makes that got a chip in the blade. It has a super sharp edge, but it's prone to getting these small cup-shaped bends in the edge as the metal is soft. Well, I kept saying I'd get it sharpened at a knife place to make the edge straight again, but didn't do it soon enough and one of the cupped pieces broke off. I thought it would be an expensive proposition to get it fixed, but it wasn't. The proprietor talked me through it briefly and reassured me it could be repaired if I was willing to sacrifice a bit of the blade that was as deep as the chip. Yes, I was! And it came out beautifully. It cost only $6.50 to get the 6.5" cleaver Japanese edge repaired, straightened, and sharp again, and was very quick. I appreciate the proprietor's candor and matter-of-factness and his craftsmanship. Had I known it was this easy, fast, and inexpensive, I would not have waited until the knife got chipped to bring it here. I am super delighted to have discovered how easy it is to keep all our knives well-maintained and safe. read more

I have a couple Henckels that hadn't seen a sharpening in 4-5 years, so they needed a lot of help. I dropped them off in the morning and was greeted with friendly service but was told they were a little backed up (a Monday). They asked me if I could pick them up after 4:30 - which was NBD to me. I'd rather it be done right than rushed. I picked them up and they were nicely wrapped up in bubble wrap and packed in an Austin Blades box. I went home and did my weekly meal prep and was amazed; it was like they were brand new again! I've seen horror stories of sharpeners completely altering the blade shape/angle and I'm happy to report that's not the case here. Using the knives felt as familiar and comfortable as before, just waaay sharper. Glad I found these guys! read more

I recently decided to bring my favorite kitchen cleaver which is many years old to Austin blades. The knife was in really bad shape almost to the point of being unusable. I dropped it off at their shop in about an hour or two I was called to come pick it up. I was amazed with what I saw. He completely refurbished cleaned up and sharpened my knife. I imediately went home and started chopping vegetables with it and I was amazed how clean the cuts were and how beautifully the knife worked. They gave a beautiful edge to my skiving knife. Huge improvement in my leather work! And they rehabilitated my old Spyderco Atlantic Salt. I have no idea how they sharpened it with its snaggly teeth, but it's better than new. Very reasonably priced service, and the work was done when they promised. I just learned about Austin Blades' knife and tool sharpening yesterday through our Next Door online service. I took two lawn mower blades and two kitchen knives for sharpening. The owner greeted me cheerfully and sharpened all four items while I waited, about 15 minutes. What a simple, useful business. It's close to the Allandale, Brentwood, and Crestview neighborhoods, at the end of Morrow where it meets North Lamar. We'll go back with more tools as needed. read more

I've never reviewed anything on yelp before, but came here to review this place because the service was excellent. I brought my 3 knives ( 10", 8", 5" Shun / Global ), and was able to get them sharpened on the spot, while my kids and I watched. The price was great ($1 an inch). After sharpening, the owner wrapped my knives in bubble wrap and boxed them up so I could carry them home safely. Later in the week I brought over my MIL's super banged up mower blade. The guy who sharpened our knives previously remembered our names. He was able to make quick work of sharpening the mower blade, even though it was the most banged up mower blade he had seen in a long time. (It's what you get with a rocky yard and 6 and 8 year old boys piloting the mower) It was $10 for sharpening the mower blade. Way cheaper than a new blade, and I'm super pleased because honestly, I thought I would have to buy one, from how rough a shape it was prior to being sharpened. The rest of the store is neat and tidy, with rows upon rows of things I'm guessing my kids will eventually save up to come buy with their allowances. Sharp, beautifully designed knives, nunchucks, throwing stars, rapiers, katanas, and so on. There was even a random, large battle-axe. I'm sure we'll be back. read more
